Project description:IN THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 5-(5,7-dihydr-oxy-4-oxo-4H-chromen-yl)-2-hydroxy-benzene-sulfonic acid dihydrate], C(15)H(10)O(8)S·2H(2)O, the benzopyran-one ring is not coplanar with the phenyl ring, the dihedral angle between them being 41.35 (3)°. No H atom was placed on the sulphonic acid group because it was not possible to distinguish between the two S=O bonds and the S-O bond. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are linked by classical O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds and aromatic π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distance of 3.4523 (14) Å between the 1, 4-pyran-one rings and the benzene rings, and 3.6337 (14) Å between the benzene rings] into a supra-molecular structure.

Project description:A short synthetic route to β,d-arabinofuranosyl 1-C-sulfonic acid (7), a possible biomimetic for the arabinofuranosyl anomeric phosphate, is described. The furanosyl 1-C-sulfonate was prepared by buffered DMDO oxidation of an S-acetyl-1-thio-β-arabinofuranose derivative. Deprotection under mild conditions allowed isolation of the free sulfonic acid without desulfonylation.

Hierarchical Porous Interlocked Polymeric Microcapsules: Sulfonic Acid Functionalization as Acid Catalysts.

Project description:Owing to their unique structural and surface properties, mesoporous microspheres are widely applied in the catalytic field. Generally, increasing the surface area of the specific active phase of the catalyst is a good method, which can achieve a higher catalytic activity through the fabrication of the corresponding catalytic microspheres with the smaller size and hollow structure. However, one of the major challenges in the use of hollow microspheres (microcapsules) as catalysts is their chemical and structural stability. Herein, the grape-like hypercrosslinked polystyrene hierarchical porous interlocked microcapsule (HPIM-HCL-PS) is fabricated by SiO2 colloidal crystals templates, whose structure is the combination of open mouthed structure, mesoporous nanostructure and interlocked architecture. Numerous microcapsules assembling together and forming the roughly grape-like microcapsule aggregates can enhance the structural stability and recyclability of these microcapsules. After undergoing the sulfonation, the sulfonated HPIM-HCL-PS is served as recyclable acid catalyst for condensation reaction between benzaldehyde and ethylene glycol (TOF = 793 h-1), moreover, exhibits superior activity, selectivity and recyclability.

Mechanocatalytic Depolymerization of Cellulose With Perfluorinated Sulfonic Acid Ionomers.

Project description:Here, we investigated that the mechanocatalytic depolymerization of cellulose in the presence of Aquivion, a sulfonated perfluorinated ionomer. Under optimized conditions, yields of water soluble sugars of 90-97% were obtained using Aquivion PW98 and PW66, respectively, as a solid acid catalyst. The detailed characterization of the water soluble fraction revealed (i) the selective formation of oligosaccharides with a DP up to 11 and (ii) that depolymerization and reversion reactions concomitantly occurred during the mechanocatalytic process, although the first largely predominated. More importantly, we discussed on the critical role of water contained in Aquivion and cellulose on the efficiency of the mechanocatalytic process.

Efficient synthesis of readily water-soluble sulfonic Acid carbamates.

Project description:A series of various readily water-soluble carbamates were synthesized with good yields. These compounds are useful chemical tracers for assessing the cooling progress in a georeservoir during geothermal power plant operation. Acylation of primary amines was carried out as well as using a solution of sodium bicarbonate and without the presence of salt. Products were characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. Purity was confirmed through elemental analysis.

Anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid (AQ2S) is a novel neurotherapeutic agent.

Project description:Anthraquinone derivatives such as emodin have recently been shown to protect in models of beta amyloid β (Aβ) and tau aggregation-induced cell death. The mechanisms of action possibly involve preconditioning effects, anti-aggregation properties, and/or enhancing the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT survival mechanism. We studied several natural (emodin, rhein, and aloin) and synthetic (AQ2S) anthraquinones, to screen for post-treatment therapeutic benefit in two models of neuronal death, namely hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and staurosporine (STS)-induced injury. Treatment with emodin, rhein, or aloin failed to reduce H(2)O(2) injury. Moreover, consistent with emodin behaving like a mild toxin, it exacerbated oxidative injury at the highest concentration used (50 μM) in our post-treatment paradigm, and potently inhibited AKT. In contrast, AQ2S was neuroprotective. It reduced H(2)O(2) injury at 50 and 75 μM. In addition, AQ2S potently inhibited staurosporine (STS)-induced injury. The mechanisms of action involve caspase inhibition and AKT activation. However, blockade of AKT signaling with LY294002 failed to abolish AQ2S-mediated protection on the STS assay. This is the first study to report that AQ2S is a new neuroprotective compound and a novel caspase inhibitor.

The central benzene ring directly linked to N and the hydroxyl group are disordered over two orientations [occupancies of 0.510 (16)/0.490 (16) and 0.528 (8)/0.472 (8), respectively]. The dihedral angle between the two aromatic rings is 23.3 (5)° for the major component and 18.3 (5)° for the minor component. There is an intra-molecular O-H⋯N hydrogen bond and mol-ecules are linked into chains along the a axis by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica Functionalized with Sulfonic Acid Groups as Acid Catalyst for Glycerol Acetylation.

Project description:A Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica (PMO) functionalized with sulfonic acid groups has been successfully synthesized via a sequence of post-synthetic modification steps of a trans-ethenylene bridged PMO material. The double bond is functionalized via a bromination and subsequent substitution obtaining a thiol functionality. This is followed by an oxidation towards a sulfonic acid group. After full characterization, the solid acid catalyst is used in the acetylation of glycerol. The catalytic reactivity and reusability of the sulfonic acid modified PMO material is investigated. The catalyst showed a catalytic activity and kinetics that are comparable with the commercially available resin, Amberlyst-15, and furthermore our catalyst can be recycled for several subsequent catalytic runs and retains its catalytic activity.

Synthesis and Bioactivities of Novel Piperonylic Acid Derivatives Containing a Sulfonic Acid Ester Moiety.

Project description:The crop loss caused by bacteria has increased year by year due to the lack of effective control agents. In order to develop efficient, broad-spectrum, and structurally simple agricultural bactericide, the structure of piperonylic acid was modified and a series of novel piperonylic acid derivatives containing a sulfonic acid ester moiety was synthesized. Bioassay results indicated the compounds exhibited significantly antibacterial activities. Among them, compound 41 exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against Pseudomonas syringae pv. Actinidiae (Psa), with inhibitory value 99 and 85% at 100 μg/ml and 50 μg/ml, respectively, which was higher than that of thiodiazole-copper (84 and 77%) and bismerthiazol (96 and 78%). In addition, some compounds also showed moderate insecticidal activity against Spodoptera frugiperda. The abovementioned results confirm the broadening of the application of piperonylic acid, with reliable support for the development of novel agrochemical bactericide.

Electroacupuncture improves trinitrobenzene sulfonic Acid-induced colitis, evaluated by transcriptomic study.

Project description:Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic colonic inflammation that displays symptoms like diarrhea and weight loss. Acupuncture has been widely accepted by Western countries for the treatment of pain. Here, we analyzed efficacy and mechanism of electroacupuncture (EA) on trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid- (TNBS-) induced colitis in mice. Mice were intrarectally administered with 250 mg/kg TNBS and electroacupunctured at Quze (PC3) and Neiguan (PC6) acupoints, which have been applied for gastrointestinal disorders. Gene expression profiles in colons and spleens were analyzed by microarray for the elucidation of mechanism of EA. Our data showed that EA at PC3 and PC6 improved macroscopic and microscopic features of colitis and the improvement displayed a frequency-dependent manner. Administration of TNBS upregulated the expression of most cytokine genes in colons, while EA downregulated the expression of TNBS-induced cytokine genes. Pathway analysis showed that EA significantly affected inflammatory pathways in colons and immunity-associated pathway in spleens. Immunohistochemical staining further showed that EA decreased the expression of interleukin-1 β and nuclear factor- κ B. In conclusion, this is the first study reporting the global gene expression profiles of EA on TNBS-induced colitis. Our findings suggested that inflammatory and immunity pathways were involved in the anti-inflammatory mechanism of EA on colitis induced by TNBS.
