ABSTRACT: In the title compound, C(12)H(14)N(2) (2+)·2I(3) (-), the 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium (DMBP) dication is charge balanced by two triiodide ions. The DMBP dication is planar within 0.010 (5) Å. The asymmetric unit contains only half of the dication, the other half being generated by an inversion center. Weak C-H⋯I inter-actions link the ions into sheets parallel to (121).

Complexation of 2,6-helic[6]arene and its derivatives with 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium salts and protonated 4,4'-bipyridinium salts: an acid-base controllable complexation.

Project description:2,6-Helic[6]arene and its derivatives were synthesized, and their complexation with 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium and protonated 4,4'-bipyridinium salts were investigated in detail. It was found that the helic[6]arene and its derivatives could all form 1:1 complexes with both 1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium salts and protonated 4,4'-bipyridinium salts in solution and in the solid state. Especially, the helic[6]arene and its derivatives containing 2-hydroxyethoxy or 2-methoxyethoxy groups exhibited stronger complexation with the guests than the other helic[6]arene derivatives for the additional multiple hydrogen bonding interactions between the hosts and the guests, which were evidenced by 1H NMR titrations, X-ray crystal structures and DFT calculations. Moreover, it was also found that the association constants (K a) of the complexes could be significantly enhanced with larger counteranions of the guests and in less polar solvents. Furthermore, the switchable complexation between the helic[6]arene and protonated 4,4'-bipyridinium salt could be efficiently controlled by acids and bases.

Project description:The title compound, (C(10)H(10)N(2))(2)[SiW(12)O(40)]·C(10)H(8)N(2)·6H(2)O or (4,4'-bipyH(2))(2)[SiW(12)O(40)].(4,4'-bipy)·6H(2)O (4,4'-bipy is 4,4'-bipyridine), was prepared under hydro-thermal conditions. The asymmetric unit contains a discrete Keggin-type [SiW(12)O(40)](4-) anion (located on a twofold axis), one 4,4'-bipy (located on a twofold axis), two (4,4'-bipyH(2))(2+) cations and six uncoordinated water mol-ecules. The polyoxoanion is constructed from a central SiO(4) tetra-hedron which shares its O atoms with four trinuclear W(3)O(13) groups, each of which is made up of three edge-sharing WO(6) octa-hedra. The water mol-ecules and [SiW(12)O(40)](4-) anions are linked through hydrogen bonds.

Project description:The title salt, C(10)H(10)N(2) (2+)·2C(7)H(4)NO(4) (-) or (4,4'-bpyH(2))(py-2,3-dcH)(2), prepared by the reaction between pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (py-2,3-dcH(2)) and 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy), consists of two anions and one centrosymmetric dication. In the crystal, there are two strong O-H?O hydrogen bonds involving the two carboxyl-ate groups, with an O?O distance of 2.478?(1)?Å, and an N-H?N hydrogen bond between the anion and cation, with an N?N distance of 2.743?(1)?Å. These inter-actions, along with other O-H?O and C-H?O hydrogen bonds, ?-? stacking [centroid-centroid distances 3.621?(7) and 3.612?(7)?Å] and ion pairing, lead to the formation of the three-dimensional structure.

Project description:In the structure of the title compound, C(10)H(10)N(2) (2+)·2ClO(4) (-)·4C(7)H(7)NO(2)·2C(10)H(8)N(2)·2H(2)O, the 4,4'-bipyridinium cation has a crystallographically imposed centre of symmetry. The cation is linked by N-H?N hydrogen bonds to adjacent 4,4'-bipyridine mol-ecules, which in turn inter-act via O-H?N hydrogen bonds with 4-amino-benzoic acid mol-ecules, forming chains running parallel to [30]. The chains are further connected into a three-dimensional network by N-H?O and O-H?O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions involving the perchlorate anion, the water mol-ecules and the 4-amino-benzoic acid mol-ecules. In addition, ?-? stacking inter-actions with centroid-centroid distances ranging from 3.663?(6) to 3.695?(6)?Å are present. The O atoms of the perchlorate anion are disordered over two sets of positions, with refined site occupancies of 0.724?(9) and 0.276?(9).

The crystal structure is determined by a complex three-dimensional network of inter-molecular O-H?O, O-H?N, N-H?N and N-H?F hydrogen bonds. ?-? stacking inter-actions between neighboring pyridyl rings are also present; the centroid-centroid distance is 3.643?(5)?Å. The hexa-fluoridophosphate anion is disordered over two positions with site-occupancy factors of ca 0.6 and 0.4.
