A tetra-nuclear cobalt(III) cluster with 2-(hydroxy-meth-yl)pyridine ligands.

ABSTRACT: In the title compound, tetra-kis[?(3)-(2-pyrid-yl)methano-lato]tetra-kis[bromido(methanol)cobalt(III)] tetra-bromide 2-(hydroxy-meth-yl)pyridine tetra-solvate dihydrate, [Co(4)Br(4)(C(6)H(6)NO)(4)(CH(3)OH)(4)]Br(4)·4C(6)H(7)NO(4)·2H(2)O, the cation comprises a [Co(4)O(4)] cubane-type core ( symmetry). The four Co(III) ions and bridging O atoms from four (2-pyrid-yl)methano-late anions are located at alternating vertices of the cube, with bromide ions and methanol ligands on the exterior of the core, completing a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The structure is stablized by inter-molecular O-H?Br and O-H?O inter-actions.

The asymmetric unit contains two anionic L ligands: one bridges two Gd cations and one Co cation through two carboxyl groups and one pyridine-N atom; the other bridges two Gd cations and one Co cation through two carboxyl groups and the uncoordinated pyridine-N atom is hydrogen-bonded to the adjacent coordinated water mol-ecule. Project description:The title compound, [Co(C(14)H(17)N(5))(C(6)H(7)N)](C(24)H(20)B) or [Co{(pyrrole)(2)dien}(4-Mepy)]BPh(4) where (pyrrole)(2)dien is 2,2'-[(3-aza-pentane-1,5-diylbis(nitrilo-methyl-idyne)]dipyrrole and 4-Mepy is 4-methyl-pyridine, contains a penta-dentate (pyrrole)(2)dien ligand furnishing an N(5) set, such that two of the pyrrole N atoms and two of the dien N atoms occupy the equatorial positions while one of the imine N atoms of the (pyrrole)(2)dien ligand occupies the axial position. The 4-methyl-pyridine ligand occupies an axial position trans to one of the imine N atoms of the penta-dentate ligand. In the observed conformation of the penta-dentate ligand, the pyrrole rings attain asymmetrical positions owing to the structural demands. The geometry of the resulting CoN(6) coordination can be described as distorted octa-hedral.

Project description:In the title complex, [CoCl(C(44)H(28)N(4))(C(5)H(5)N)]·0.5CHCl(3) or [Co(III)(TPP)Cl(py)]·0.5CHCl(3) (where TPP is the dianion of tetra-phenyl-porphyrin and py is pyridine), the average equatorial cobalt-pyrrole N atom bond length (Co-N(p)) is 1.958?(7)?Å and the axial Co-Cl and Co-N(py) distances are 2.2339?(6) and 1.9898?(17)?Å, respectively. The tetra-phenyl-porphyrinate dianion exhibits an important nonplanar conformation with major ruffling and saddling distortions. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via weak C-H?? inter-actions. In the difference Fourier map, a region of highly disordered electron density was estimated using the SQUEEZE routine [PLATON; Spek (2009 ?), Acta Cryst. D65, 148-155] to be equivalent to one half-mol-ecule of CHCl(3) per mol-ecule of the complex.
