ABSTRACT: The mol-ecule of the title compound, C(4)H(4)IN(3), has crystallographic mirror plane symmetry. In the crystal, the mol-ecules are connected through N-H?N hydrogen bonds into polymeric tapes extended along the a axis, which are typical of 2-amino-pyrimidines. Each mol-ecule acts as a double donor and a double acceptor in the hydrogen bonding.

In the crystal, molecules are linked via pairs of N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, forming inversion dimers. These dimers are further linked via N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds, forming an undulating two-dimensional network lying parallel to (100).

It crystallizes with two independent mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit that differ only in the twist between the two aromatic rings; the torsion angles between the rings are 29.9 (2) and 45.1 (2)°. The crystal packing is dominated by inter-molecular N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds between independent and equivalent mol-ecules, forming an infinite three-dimensional network.
