Filled skutterudite structure of europium ruthenium polyphosphide, EuRu(4)P(12).

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of EuRu(4)P(12) is isotypic with filled skutterudite structures of rare earth transition metal poly-phosphides: RFe(4)P(12) (R = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu), RRu(4)P(12) (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) and ROs(4)P(12) (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd). The Ru cation is coordinated by six P anions in a distorted octa-hedral manner. The partially occupied Eu position (site occupancy 0.97) is enclosed by a cage formed by the corner-shared framework of the eight RuP(6) octa-hedra.

Thermal Expansion and Rattling Behavior of Gd-Filled Co<sub>4</sub>Sb<sub>12</sub> Skutterudite Determined by High-Resolution Synchrotron X-ray Diffraction.

Project description:In this work, Gd-filled skutterudite GdxCo4Sb12 was prepared using one step method under high pressure in a piston-cylinder-based press at 3.5 GPa and moderate temperature of 800 °C. A detailed structural characterization was performed using synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD), revealing a filling fraction of x = 0.033(2) and an average <Gd-Sb> bond length of 3.3499(3) Å. The lattice thermal expansion accessed via temperature-dependent SXRD led to a precise determination of a Debye temperature of 322(3) K, from the fitting of the unit-cell volume expansion using the second order Grüneisen approximation. This parameter, when evaluated through the mean square displacements of Co and Sb, displayed a value of 265(2) K, meaning that the application of the harmonic Debye theory underestimates the Debye temperature in skutterudites. Regarding the Gd atom, its intrinsic disorder value was ~5× and ~25× higher than those of the Co and Sb, respectively, denoting that Gd has a strong rattling behavior with an Einstein temperature of θE = 67(2) K. As a result, an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.89 W/m·K at 773 K was obtained, leading to a thermoelectric efficiency zT of 0.5 at 673 K.

Europium (III) as a Circularly Polarized Luminescence Probe of DNA Structure.

Project description:We report as a proof-of-concept the first application of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measured with a Raman optical activity (ROA) spectrometer to differentiate several DNA structures without need of sensitizing complexes. The ROA/CPL approach provides sufficiently high CPL intensity to use hydrated Eu3+ ions, thus avoiding DNA structural changes associated with binding of sensitizers and overcoming the sensitizer quenching issue. We showed that deoxyguanosine monophosphate (dGMP), single- and double-stranded DNA provide different CPL spectra, which could be used for their discrimination. Our results demonstrate that ROA/CPL method is a promising approach to measure CPL spectra of complex biomolecules when the use of sensitizers is not possible. The method can be extended to other biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, sugars, etc.

Band Structure Engineering and Thermoelectric Properties of Charge-Compensated Filled Skutterudites.

Project description:Thermoelectric properties of semiconductors are intimately related to their electronic band structure, which can be engineered via chemical doping. Dopant Ga in the cage-structured skutterudite Co4Sb12 substitutes Sb sites while occupying the void sites. Combining quantitative scanning transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations, we show that Ga dual-site occupancy breaks the symmetry of the Sb-Sb network, splits the deep triply-degenerate conduction bands, and drives them downward to the band edge. The charge-compensating nature of the dual occupancy Ga increases overall filling fraction limit. By imparting this unique band structure feature, and judiciously doping the materials by increasing the Yb content, we promote the Fermi level to a point where carriers are in energetic proximity to these features. Increased participation of these heavier bands in electronic transport leads to increased thermopower and effective mass. Further, the localized distortion from Ga/Sb substitution enhances the phonon scattering to reduce the thermal conductivity effectively.

Structure-Dependent Photoluminescence of Europium(III) Coordination Oligomeric Silsesquioxane: Synthesis and Mechanism.

Project description:The coordination environment of Eu3+ is a crucial factor in the optical performance of the complex. Herein, a new kind of oligomeric silsesquioxane was employed to improve the coordination environment of central ions, the luminescence intensity of which was greatly enhanced with an efficient emission peak at 619 nm. More importantly, the photoluminescent properties of the product will be altered because of the formation of the Si-O-Si structure. The relevant mechanism has also been investigated and proposed by a series of characterization analyses. Additionally, the fluorescence lifetime, intrinsic quantum yield, and energy transfer efficiency were calculated. In addition, the observed trend of Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters was used to justify the coordination environment of Eu3+ ions. The experimental results reveal that the sol-gel reaction of the ligands can effectively promote intramolecular energy transfer. In addition, we introduced four theory modules of ligands (LSi, LSi-1, LSi-2, and LSi-3) with certain rules of formation of Si-O-Si, and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) were used to explore their excited electron transfer process and their electronic absorption spectra, combined with Marcus theory. The calculated results show that the sol-gel reaction will induce the separation of the distribution of excited holes and electrons, leading to an efficient charge-transfer (CT) process. The predictable results were in good accordance with the experimental findings. Consequently, the sol-gel reaction occurring among ligands will be attributed to an efficient CT process, leading to a strong luminescence intensity, as observed experimentally.

Crystal structure of a new europium(III) compound based on thiopheneacrylic acid

Project description:The crystallization and supramolecular structure of a new europium(III) compound based on thiopheneacrylic acid is reported. A europium(III) coordination compound based on thiopheneacrylic acid (Htpa), triaquatris[3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-enoato-κ2O,O′]europium(III)–3-(thiophen-2-yl)prop-2-enoic acid (1/3), [Eu(C7H5O2S)3(H2O)3]·3C7H6O2S or [Eu(tpa)3(H2O)3]·3(Htpa) (1), where tpa is the conjugate base of Htpa, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. Compound 1 crystallizes in the trigonal space group R3. The structure of 1 consists of a discrete molecular complex [Eu(tpa)3(H2O)3] species and the Htpa molecule. In the crystal, the two components are involved in O—H⋯O [ring motif R22(8)] and C—H⋯π hydrogen-bonding interactions. These interactions were further investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis, which showed high contributions of H⋯H, H⋯C/C⋯H and H⋯O/O⋯H contacts to the total Hirshfeld surfaces.

Structure and reactivity of alkyne-chelated ruthenium alkylidene complexes.

Project description:The isolation and structural characterization of alkyne-bound Ru alkylidene complexes has been elusive. However, a sequential enyne ring-closing metathesis of a diyne moiety and metallotropic [1,3]-shift followed by a second enyne ring-closing metathesis allowed the formation of a highly stable alkyne-chelated ruthenium complex. The full characterization of this complex was realized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

Thermal conductivity of skutterudite CoSb3 from first principles: Substitution and nanoengineering effects.

Project description:CoSb3-based skutterudites are promising intermediate-temperature thermoelectric materials and fundamental understanding of the thermal transport in CoSb3 is crucial for further improving its performance. We herein calculate the lattice thermal conductivity κL of CoSb3 with first-principles methods and conduct a comprehensive analysis on phonon mode contribution, relaxation time and mean free path (MFP) distributions. The contribution of optical phonons is found to be significant (28% at 300 K) and important optical modes usually involve two or more pnicogen atoms moving synchronously. The MFP (~135 nm at 300 K) corresponding to 50% κL accumulation in CoSb3 is much larger than that predicted from the kinetic theory (~4 nm), providing an opportunity to reduce κL by nanoengineering. The effects of elemental substitution and nanoengineering on κL are therefore investigated. A 10% substitution of Sb by As results in 57% reduction of κL while the in-plane (cross-plane) κL of a 50-nm CoSb3 thin film is only 56% (33%) of the bulk κL at 300 K. The impurity scattering and boundary scattering mainly suppress phonons in different frequency regimes. By combining these two effects, κL can be reduced by more than 70% at 300 K, potentially leading to much improved ZT near room temperature.

A New Approach to the Structure-Properties Relationships Determination for Porous Filled Reinforced Materials.

Project description:This study describes a new mathematical approach to the relationship between mechanical properties (tensile modulus, ultimate strength, and strain), composition as well as structure of porous-filled reinforced composites. The composite system consisted of a polyurethane matrix, a rubber filler, and a small amount of polyethylene terephthalate as a reinforcement. The newly proposed equations are based on a special mixing rule with the same basic form for all studied properties. The mixing rule contains a correction parameter η, which differs in different filler content in the filled part of the composite. Here, a cubic exponential function including the product of suitable structural parameters and exponents ensuring the best fitting and describable by matrix properties were successfully defined to fit the different values of correction parameter. The proposed equations should be a suitable step to obtain a relationship for describing the mechanical behavior of porous-filled and reinforced composites in the case of a small amount of reinforcement.
