Project description:NaSm(PO(3))(4) has been prepared by solid state reactions. It belongs to type II of the structural family of M(I)Ln(III)(PO(3))(4) compounds (M(I) = alkali metal and Ln(III) = rare earth metal) and is composed of (?)(PO(3))(n)](n-) polyphosphate chains with a repeating unit of four PO(4) tetra-hedra. The chains extend parallel to [100] and share O atoms with irregular SmO(8) polyhedra, forming a three-dimensional framework which delimits tunnels occupied by Na(+) cations in a distorted octa-hedral environment.

Project description:The title compound, K(2)Sm(MoO(4))(PO(4)), has been prepared under atmospheric conditions using a high temperature solution growth (HTSG) method. The structure of K(2)Sm(MoO(4))(PO(4)) is isotypic with other A(2)M(MoO(4))(PO(4)) compounds, where A = Na or K, and M = trivalent rare earth cation. It can be described as being built up from two-dimensional anionic layers with composition [Sm(MoO(4))(PO(4))](2-) that are stacked along the c axis and are inter-connected by K(+) cations which are in an eightfold coordination by O atoms. The SmO(8), MoO(4) and PO(4) polyhedra exhibit 2 symmetry.

Project description:Layered Li9V3(P2O7)3(PO4)2 has attracted considerable interest as a novel cathode material for potential use in rechargeable lithium batteries. The defect chemistry, doping behavior and lithium diffusion paths in Li9V3(P2O7)3(PO4)2 are investigated using atomistic scale simulations. Here we show that the activation energy for Li migration via the vacancy mechanism is 0.72?eV along the c-axis. Additionally, the most favourable intrinsic defect type is Li Frenkel (0.44?eV/defect) ensuring the formation of Li vacancies that are required for Li diffusion via the vacancy mechanism. The only other intrinsic defect mechanism that is close in energy is the formation of anti-site defect, in which Li and V ions exchange their positions (1.02?eV/defect) and this can play a role at higher temperatures. Considering the solution of tetravalent dopants it is calculated that they require considerable solution energies, however, the solution of GeO2 will reduce the activation energy of migration to 0.66?eV.

Project description:The ability of lithium to interfere with phosphoinositide metabolism in rat cerebral cortex slices has been examined by monitoring the accumulation of CMP-phosphatidate (CMP-PtdOH) and the reduction in Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 levels. A small accumulation of [14C]CMP-PtdOH was seen in slices prelabelled with [14C]cytidine and stimulated with carbachol (1 mM) or Li+ (1 mM). However, simultaneous addition of both agents for 30 min produced a 22-fold accumulation, with Li+ producing a half-maximal effect at a concentration of 0.61 +/- 0.19 mM. Kinetic studies revealed that the effects of carbachol and Li+ on CMP-PtdOH accumulation occurred with no initial lag apparent under these conditions and that preincubation with myo-inositol (10 or 30 mM) dramatically attenuated CMP-PtdOH accumulation. myo-Inositol could also attenuate the rate of accumulation of CMP-PtdOH when added 20 min after carbachol and Li+; these effects were not observed when equimolar concentrations of scyllo-inositol were added. Use of specific radioreceptor assays allowed the mass accumulations of Ins(1,4,5)P3 and Ins(1,3,4,5)P4 to be monitored. Following a lag of 5-10 min, Li+ resulted in a marked reduction in the accumulation of both inositol polyphosphates resulting from muscarinic-cholinergic stimulation. Preincubation of cerebral cortex slices with myo- (but not scyllo-) inositol delayed, but did not prevent, the reduction in the accumulation of Ins(1,4,5)P3 or Ins(1,3,4,5)P4. The results suggest that cerebral cortex, at least in vitro, is very sensitive to myo-inositol depletion under conditions of muscarinic receptor stimulation. The relationship of such depletion to the generation of inositol polyphosphate second messengers is discussed.

Project description:A lithium metal anode is regarded as the most promising anode material for the next generation of high-energy density batteries because of its high specific capacity and low reduction potential. However, dendritic deposition and severe side reactions in continuous Li plating/stripping inevitably hinder the practical application of Li metal batteries. A solid polymer electrolyte protective layer with synergistic Li3PO4/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) features is in situ constructed on a lithium metal anode to obtain a stable interface during charge/discharge cycles. The protective layer can adapt to volume changes and inhibit lithium dendrites. The in situ reaction guaranteed the uniformity of ion transport and a tight interface between the protective layer and the lithium metal, so that the lithium deposition behavior was effectively regulated. The PP-Li anode presented a stable Li plating/stripping for 1000 h in a symmetrical cell system and exhibited an enhanced performance of the lithium titanium oxide cell. The in situ Li3PO4/PVA solid polymer electrolyte protective layer provided a promising strategy to tackle the challenges raised by the intrinsic properties of the lithium metal anode.

Project description:Gray-green single crystals were obtained under high-pressure, high-temperature hydro-thermal conditions. A refinement of atom occupancies gave the composition Li(3.68)Cu(2+)Fe(3+)(Cu(0.55)Li(0.45))(2)Fe(2+) (0.15)(PO(4))(4). The structure is built from triplets of edge-sharing (Cu,Li)O(5)-FeO(6)-(Cu,Li)O(5) polyhedra, CuO(4) quadrilaterals and PO(4) tetra-hedra. In the (Cu,Li)O(5) polyhedra the Cu and Li positions are statistically occupied in a 0.551?(2):0.449?(2) ratio. Both FeO(6) and CuO(4) polyhedra exhibit [Formula: see text] symmetry. The positions of additional Li atoms with vacancy defects are in the inter-stices of the framework.

Project description:Single crystals of the title compound, potassium praseodymium(III) polyphosphate, were obtained by solid-state reaction. The monoclinic non-centrosymmetric structure is isotypic with all other KLn(PO(3))(4) analogues from Ln = La to Er, inclusive. The crystal structure of these long-chain polyphosphates is built up from infinite crenelated polyphosphate chains of corner-sharing PO(4) tetra-hedra with a repeating unit of four tetra-hedra. These chains, running along [100], are arranged in a pseudo-tetra-gonal rod packing and are further linked by isolated PrO(8) square anti-prisms [Pr-O = 2.3787?(9)-2.5091?(8)?Å], forming a three-dimensional framework. The K(+) ions reside in channels parallel to [010] and exhibit a highly distorted coordination sphere by eight O atoms at distances ranging from 2.7908?(9) to 3.1924?(11)?Å.

Project description:Single crystals of lithium dysprosium polyphosphate, LiDy(PO(3))(4), were prepared by the flux method. The atomic arrangement is built up by infinite (PO(3))(n) chains extending along the b axis. Dy(3+) and Li(+) cations alternate in the middle of four such chains, with Dy?Li distances of 3.54?(1) and 3.48?(1)?Å. The DyO(8) dodeca-hedra and LiO(4) tetra-hedra deviate significantly from the ideal geometry. Both Dy and Li occupy special positions (Wyckoff position 4e, site symmetry 2).
