Incorporation of ?(3)-CO(3) into an Mn/Mn Mn(12) cluster: {[(cyclam)Mn(?-O)(2)Mn(H(2)O)(?-OH)](6)(?(3)-CO(3))(2)}Cl(8)·24H(2)O.

ABSTRACT: The centrosymmetric title cluster, hexa-aquadi-?(3)-carbonato-hexa-cyclamhexa-?(2)-hydroxido-dodeca-?(2)-oxido-hexa-mang-an-ese(IV)hexa-manganese(III) octa-chloride tetra-cosa-hydrate, [Mn(12)(CO(3))(2)O(12)(OH)(6)(C(10)H(24)N(4))(6)(H(2)O)(6)]Cl(8)·24H(2)O, has two ?(3)-CO(3) groups that not only bridge octahedrally coordinated Mn(III) ions but also act as acceptors to two different kinds of hydrogen bonds. The carbonate anion is planar within experimental error and has an average C-O distance of 1.294?(4)?Å. The crystal packing is stabilized by O-H?Cl, O-H?O, N-H?Cl and N-H?O hydrogen bonds. Two of the four independent chloride ions are disordered over five positions, and eight of the 12 independent water mol-ecules are disordered over 21 positions.

Synthesis and Characterization of the New Manganese Hydroxide Chloride ?-Mn(OH)Cl.

Project description:A new modification of Mn(OH)Cl was obtained under high-pressure/high-temperature conditions in a Walker-type multianvil device. The pale pink, hygroscopic compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (no. 62) with a = 602.90(4), b = 350.98(2), c = 1077.69(7) pm, and V = 228?×?106 pm3. The layered centrosymmetric structure consists of edge-sharing Mn(OH)3Cl3 octahedra arranged in sheets parallel to the (001) plane. The comparatively long H···Cl distance of 275 pm suggests only weak hydrogen bonds between neighboring layers. Spin-polarized scalar-relativistic DFT+U calculations predict a non-conducting magnetically ordered ground state with a band gap of at least 3.2 eV and an effective magnetic moment of 4.65 µB/f. u. The experimentally determined magnetic response of Mn(OH)Cl is paramagnetic in the range of 10-300 K. The estimated moment of 5.6 µB/f. u. indicates the high-spin d 5 configuration of manganese(II). We find hints for a long-range magnetic ordering below 10 K.

Hydroxyl Transfer to Carbon Radicals by Mn(OH) vs Fe(OH) Corrole Complexes.

Project description:The transfer of •OH from metal-hydroxo species to carbon radicals (R•) to give hydroxylated products (ROH) is a fundamental process in metal-mediated heme and nonheme C-H bond oxidations. This step, often referred to as the hydroxyl "rebound" step, is typically very fast, making direct study of this process challenging if not impossible. In this report, we describe the reactions of the synthetic models M(OH)(ttppc) (M = Fe (1), Mn (3); ttppc = 5,10,15-tris(2,4,6-triphenyl)phenyl corrolato3-) with a series of triphenylmethyl carbon radical (R•) derivatives ((4-X-C6H4)3C•; X = OMe, tBu, Ph, Cl, CN) to give the one-electron reduced MIII(ttppc) complexes and ROH products. Rate constants for 3 for the different radicals ranged from 11.4(1) to 58.4(2) M-1 s-1, as compared to those for 1, which fall between 0.74(2) and 357(4) M-1 s-1. Linear correlations for Hammett and Marcus plots for both Mn and Fe were observed, and the small magnitudes of the slopes for both correlations imply a concerted •OH transfer reaction for both metals. Eyring analyses of reactions for 1 and 3 with (4-X-C6H4)3C• (X = tBu, CN) also give good linear correlations, and a comparison of the resulting activation parameters highlight the importance of entropy in these •OH transfer reactions. Density functional theory calculations of the reaction profiles show a concerted process with one transition state for all radicals investigated and help to explain the electronic features of the OH rebound process.

Project description:Anionic water clusters have long been studied to infer properties of the bulk hydrated electron. In particular, the question of whether the excess electron is on the surface of the cluster or in the interior of the clusters has been the subject of much speculation. The successes of solid-state physics are built on exploiting the regularity of atomic arrangements in crystal. Describing the crystalline order of solids is relatively straightforward. Here we report the crystal structure of an anionic water cluster polymer [(H?O)18(OH)?]n2n- moiety that is stabilized by bis(2,2'-bipyridine) cupric chloride [Cu(bipy)?Cl]- host.

New Photosensitizers Based on Heteroleptic CuI Complexes and CO2 Photocatalytic Reduction with [NiII (cyclam)]Cl2.

Project description:Earth-abundant metal complexes have been attracting increasing attention in the field of photo(redox)catalysis. In this work, the synthesis and full characterisation of four new heteroleptic CuI complexes are reported, which can work as photosensitizers. The complexes bear a bulky diphosphine (DPEPhos=bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)phenyl] ether) and a diimine chelating ligand based on 1-benzyl-4-(quinol-2'yl)-1,2,3-triazole. Their absorption has a relative maximum in the visible-light region, up to 450 nm. Thus, their use in photocatalytic systems for the reduction of CO2 with blue light in combination with the known catalyst [NiII (cyclam)]Cl2 was tested. This system produced CO as the main product through visible light (λ=420 nm) with a TON up to 8 after 4 hours. This value is in line with other photocatalytic systems using the same catalyst. Nevertheless, this system is entirely noble-metal free.

Lithio-marsturite, LiCa(2)Mn(2)Si(5)O(14)(OH).

Project description:Lithio-marsturite, ideally LiCa(2)Mn(2)Si(5)O(14)(OH), is a member of the pectolite-pyroxene series of pyroxenoids (hydro-pyroxenoids) and belongs to the rhodonite group. A previous structure determination of this mineral based on triclinic symmetry in space group P[Formula: see text] by Peacor et al. [Am. Mineral. (1990), 75, 409-414] converged with R = 0.18 without reporting any information on atomic coordinates and displacement param-eters. The current study redetermines its structure from a natural specimen from the type locality (Foote mine, North Carolina) based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structure of lithio-marsturite is characterized by ribbons of edge-sharing CaO(6) and two types of MnO(6) octa-hedra as well as chains of corner-sharing SiO(4) tetra-hedra, both extending along [110]. The octa-hedral ribbons are inter-connected by the rather irregular CaO(8) and LiO(6) polyhedra through sharing corners and edges, forming layers parallel to ([Formula: see text]1[Formula: see text]), which are linked together by the silicate chains. Whereas the coordination environments of the Mn and Li cations can be compared to those of the corresponding cations in nambulite, the bonding situations of the Ca cations are more similar to those in babingtonite. In contrast to the hydrogen-bonding scheme in babingtonite, which has one O atom as the hydrogen-bond donor and a second O atom as the hydrogen-bond acceptor, our study shows that the situation is reversed in lithio-marsturite for the same two O atoms, as a consequence of the differences in the bonding environments around O atoms in the two minerals.

Crystal structure of tetra-wickmanite, Mn(2+)Sn(4+)(OH)6.

Project description:The crystal structure of tetra-wickmanite, ideally Mn(2+)Sn(4+)(OH)6 [mangan-ese(II) tin(IV) hexa-hydroxide], has been determined based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected from a natural sample from Långban, Sweden. Tetra-wickmanite belongs to the octa-hedral-framework group of hydroxide-perovskite minerals, described by the general formula BB'(OH)6 with a perovskite derivative structure. The structure differs from that of an ABO3 perovskite in that the A site is empty while each O atom is bonded to an H atom. The perovskite B-type cations split into ordered B and B' sites, which are occupied by Mn(2+) and Sn(4+), respectively. Tetra-wickmanite exhibits tetra-gonal symmetry and is topologically similar to its cubic polymorph, wickmanite. The tetra-wickmanite structure is characterized by a framework of alternating corner-linked [Mn(2+)(OH)6] and [Sn(4+)(OH)6] octa-hedra, both with point-group symmetry -1. Four of the five distinct H atoms in the structure are statistically disordered. The vacant A site is in a cavity in the centre of a distorted cube formed by eight octa-hedra at the corners. However, the hydrogen-atom positions and their hydrogen bonds are not equivalent in every cavity, resulting in two distinct environments. One of the cavities contains a ring of four hydrogen bonds, similar to that found in wickmanite, while the other cavity is more distorted and forms crankshaft-type chains of hydrogen bonds, as previously proposed for tetra-gonal stottite, Fe(2+)Ge(4+)(OH)6.

Pyrosmalite-(Fe), Fe(8)Si(6)O(15)(OH,Cl)(10).

Project description:Pyrosmalite-(Fe), ideally Fe(II) (8)Si(6)O(15)(OH,Cl)(10) [refined composition in this study: Fe(8)Si(6)O(15)(OH(0.814)Cl(0.186))(10)·0.45H(2)O, octa-iron(II) hexa-silicate deca-(chloride/hydroxide) 0.45-hydrate], is a phyllosilicate mineral and a member of the pyrosmalite series (Fe,Mn)(8)Si(6)O(15)(OH,Cl)(10), which includes pyrosmalite-(Mn), as well as friedelite and mcgillite, two polytypes of pyrosmalite-(Mn). This study presents the first structure determination of pyrosmalite-(Fe) based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data from a natural sample from Burguillos del Cerro, Badajos, Spain. Pyrosmalite-(Fe) is isotypic with pyrosmalite-(Mn) and its structure is characterized by a stacking of brucite-type layers of FeO(6)-octa-hedra alternating with sheets of SiO(4) tetra-hedra along [001]. These sheets consist of 12-, six- and four-membered rings of tetra-hedra in a 1:2:3 ratio. In contrast to previous studies on pyrosmalite-(Mn), which all assumed that Cl and one of the four OH-groups occupy the same site, our data on pyrosmalite-(Fe) revealed a split-site structure model with Cl and OH occupying distinct sites. Furthermore, our study appears to suggest the presence of disordered structural water in pyrosmalite-(Fe), consistent with infrared spectroscopic data measured from the same sample. Weak hydrogen bonding between the ordered OH-groups that are part of the brucite-type layers and the terminal silicate O atoms is present.

Co-Adsorption of H2O, OH, and Cl on Aluminum and Intermetallic Surfaces and Its Effects on the Work Function Studied by DFT Calculations.

Project description:The energetics of adsorption of H2O layers and H2O layers partially replaced with OH or Cl on an Al(111) surface and on selected surfaces of intermetallic phases, Mg2Si and Al2Cu, was studied by first-principle calculations using the density function theory (DFT). The results show that H2O molecules tended to bind to all investigated surfaces with an adsorption energy in a relatively narrow range, between -0.8 eV and -0.5 eV, at increased water coverage. This can be explained by the dominant role of networks of hydrogen bonds at higher H2O coverage. On the basis of the work function, the calculated Volta potential data suggest that both intermetallic phases became less noble than Al(111); also, the Volta potential difference was larger than 1 V when the coverage of the Cl-containing ad-layer reached one monolayer. The energetics of H2O dissociation and substitution by Cl as well as the corresponding work function of each surface were also calculated. The increase in the work function of the Al(111) surface was attributed to the oxidation effect during H2O adsorption, whereas the decrease of the work function for the Mg2Si(111)-Si surface upon H2O adsorption was explained by atomic and electronic rearrangements in the presence of H2O and Cl.

Redetermination of katayamalite, KLi3Ca7Ti2(SiO3)12(OH)2.

Project description:The crystal structure of katayamalite, ideally KLi3Ca7Ti2(SiO3)12(OH)2 (potassium trilithium hepta-calcium dititanium dodeca-silicate di-hydroxide), was previously reported in triclinic symmetry (C-1), with isotropic displacement parameters for all atoms and without the H-atom position [Kato & Murakami (1985 ?). Mineral. J. 12, 206-217]. The present study redetermines the katayamalite structure with monoclinic symmetry (space group C2/c) based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data from a sample from the type locality, Iwagi Island, Ehime Prefecture, Japan, with anisotropic displacement parameters for all non-H atoms, and with the H atoms located by difference Fourier analysis. The structure of katayamalite contains a set of six-membered silicate rings inter-connected by sheets of Ca atoms on one side and by an ordered mixture of Li, Ti and K atoms on the other side, forming layers which are stacked normal to (001). From the eight different metal sites, three are located on special positions, viz. one K and one Li atom on twofold rotation axes and one Ca atom on an inversion center. The Raman spectrum of kataymalite shows a band at 3678?cm(-1), similar to that observed for hydroxyl-amphiboles, indicating no or very weak hydrogen bonding.

Solute carrier family 26 member a2 (Slc26a2) protein functions as an electroneutral SOFormula/OH-/Cl- exchanger regulated by extracellular Cl-.

Project description:Slc26a2 is a ubiquitously expressed SO(4)(2-) transporter with high expression levels in cartilage and several epithelia. Mutations in SLC26A2 are associated with diastrophic dysplasia. The mechanism by which Slc26a2 transports SO(4)(2-) and the ion gradients that mediate SO(4)(2-) uptake are poorly understood. We report here that Slc26a2 functions as an SO(4)(2-)/2OH(-), SO(4)(2-)/2Cl(-), and SO(4)(2-)/OH(-)/Cl(-) exchanger, depending on the Cl(-) and OH(-) gradients. At inward Cl(-) and outward pH gradients (high Cl(-)(o) and low pH(o)) Slc26a2 functions primarily as an SO(4)(2-)(o)/2OH(-)(i) exchanger. At low Cl(-)(o) and high pH(o) Slc26a2 functions increasingly as an SO(4)(2-)(o)/2Cl(-)(i) exchanger. The reverse is observed for SO(4)(2-)(i)/2OH(-)(o) and SO(4)(2-)(i)/2Cl(-)(o) exchange. Slc26a2 also exchanges Cl(-) for I(-), Br(-), and NO(3)(-) and Cl(-)(o) competes with SO(4)(2-) on the transport site. Interestingly, Slc26a2 is regulated by an extracellular anion site, required to activate SO(4)(2-)(i)/2OH(-)(o) exchange. Slc26a2 can transport oxalate in exchange for OH(-) and/or Cl(-) with properties similar to SO(4)(2-) transport. Modeling of the Slc26a2 transmembrane domain (TMD) structure identified a conserved extracellular sequence (367)GFXXP(371) between TMD7 and TMD8 close to the conserved Glu(417) in the permeation pathway. Mutation of Glu(417) eliminated transport by Slc26a2, whereas mutation of Phe(368) increased the affinity for SO(4)(2-)(o) 8-fold while reducing the affinity for Cl(-)(o) 2 fold, but without affecting regulation by Cl(-)(o). These findings clarify the mechanism of net SO(4)(2-) transport and describe a novel regulation of Slc26a2 by an extracellular anion binding site and should help in further understanding aberrant SLC26A2 function in diastrophic dysplasia.
