ABSTRACT: IN THE CRYSTAL STRUCTURE OF THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 1-(2-hy-droxy-eth-yl)-2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-3-ium perchlorate], C(6)H(10)N(3)O(3) (+)·ClO(4) (-), the cations are linked by inter-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds into zigzag chains along the c axis. The cations and anions are connected by O-H?O and C-H?O hydrogen bonds. A weak intra-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bond is also observed.

Project description:IN THE TITLE SALT (SYSTEMATIC NAME: 6-amino-9H-purin-1-ium perchlorate), C(5)H(6)N(5) (+)·ClO(4) (-), the adeninium cation is essentially planar, with a maximum deviation of 0.038 (1) Å. The whole of the perchlorate anion is disordered over two sets of sites with an occupancy ratio of 0.589 (13):0.411 (13). In the crystal, the adeninium cations are linked by pairs of N-H⋯N hydrogen bond into inversion dimers. The dimers and the anions are further inter-connected into a three-dimensional supra-molecular structure via inter-molecular N-H⋯O, C-H⋯O and C-H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

The cations are connected along a and b axes, leading to linear and zigzag C(3) and C(8) chain motifs, respectively. A cation-anion inter-action along the c axis leads to a C 2 (2)(12) chain motif. R 3 (3)(18) and R 3 (3)(20) ring motifs are observed as cation-anion-type inter-actions. These hydrogen-bonding ring and chain motifs are localized at z = 0 or 1, leading to alternate hydro-philic and hydro-phobic regions along the c axis as a result of the stacking of anions and the aromatic cationic parts.

Project description:Two enantiomeric counterparts (l- and d-asparginium cations related by glide planes) are present in the structure of the title compound, C(4)H(9)N(2)O(3) (+)·ClO(4) (-), with a 1:1 cation-anion ratio. The structure is built up from asparginium cations and perchlorate anions. In the crystal, mol-ecules assemble in double layers parallel to (100) through N-H⋯O, O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. In the asparginium layers, hydrogen bonds generate alternating R(2) (2)(8) and R(4) (3)(18) graph-set motifs. Further hydrogen bonds involving the anions and cations result in the formation of a three-dimensional network.

Project description:The excessive perchlorate utilization as an oxidizer in rocket propellants and blasting agents had led to the contamination of surface and ground waters. This chemical is known to compete with iodine for binding to the thyroid membrane receptors potentially causing hypothyroidism and fetal retardation in pregnant women. Nevertheless, to date, its biological effects are not completely understood. We have investigated the molecular mechanisms responsive to perchlorate in the nematode C. elegans to nominate a candidate gene for further peruse in the development of a C.elegans perchlorate biosensor. Perchlorate (1 mg/mL) affected the transcriptional response of Regulation of developmental process, growth, defense mechanisms and stress response, among other biological processes.
