ABSTRACT: THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 2-(4a,8-dimethyl-1,2,3,4,4a,5,6,8a-octa-hydro-naphthalen-2-yl)acrylic acid anhydride], C(30)H(42)O(3), is a new isocostic anhydride which was synthesized from the aerial part of Inula Viscosa- (L) Aiton [or Dittrichia Viscosa- (L) Greuter]. The mol-ecule adopts an essentially linear shape with two terminal fused-rings bridged by the anhydride group. The external rings have the same conformation (half-chair) while each of the two inner rings has an almost ideal chair conformation. In the crystal, inter-molecular C-H?O inter-actions link the mol-ecules into a two-dimensional array in the bc plane.

Toughening Anhydride-Cured Epoxy Resins Using Fatty Alkyl-Anhydride-Grafted Epoxidized Soybean Oil.

Project description:The aim of this work is to develop a series of advanced biobased tougheners for thermosetting epoxy resins suitable for high-performance applications. These bio-rubber (BR) tougheners were prepared via a one-step chemical modification of epoxidized soybean oil using biobased hexanoic anhydride. To investigate their toughening performance, these BR tougheners were blended with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy monomers at various weight fractions and cured with anhydride hardeners. Significant improvements in fracture toughness properties, as well as minimal reductions in glass transition temperature (Tg), were observed. When 20 wt % of a BR toughener was utilized, the critical stress intensity factor and critical strain energy release rate of a thermosetting matrix were enhanced by >200 and >500%, respectively, whereas the Tg was reduced by only 20 °C. The phase-separated domains were evenly dispersed across the fracture surfaces as observed through scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Moreover, domain sizes were demonstrated to be tunable within the micrometer range by altering the toughener molecular structure and weight fractions. These BR tougheners demonstrate the possibility of achieving toughness while having the thermal properties of standard bisphenol epoxy thermosetting resins.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(23)H(12)O(4), contains two nearly parallel independent mol-ecules; the dihedral angles between the phenanthrene ring systems of the two mol-ecules and between the benzene rings of the two mol-ecules are 4.97?(9) and 8.1?(2)°, respectively. In each mol-ecule, the benzene ring is nearly perpendicular to the phenanthrene ring system, with dihedral angles of 86.42?(19) and 86.68?(18)°. ?-? stacking exists between the phenanthrene ring systems of the two independent mol-ecules [centroid-centroid distance = 3.698?(2)?Å]. Short intermolec-ular contacts [O?O = 2.86?(2) and C?O = 2.88?(2)?Å] are also present in the crystal structure.

Production of Cyclic Anhydride-Modified Starches.

Project description:Modified starches offer a biodegradable, readily available, and cost-effective alternative to petroleum-based products. The reaction of alkenylsuccinic anhydrides (ASAs), in particular, is an efficient method to produce amphiphilic starches with numerous applications in different areas. While ASAs are typically derived from petroleum sources, maleated soybean oil can also be used in an effort to produce materials from renewable sources. The reaction of gelatinized waxy maize starch with octenylsuccinic anhydride (OSA), dodecenylsuccinic anhydride (DDSA), a maleated fatty acid (TENAX 2010), phthalic anhydride (PA), 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid anhydride (trimellitic anhydride, TMA), and three maleated soybean oil samples, was investigated under different conditions. To minimize the reaction time and the amount of water required, the outcome of the esterification reaction was compared for starch dispersions in benchtop dispersed reactions, for starch melts in a heated torque rheometer, and for reactive extrusion in a pilot plant scale twin-screw extruder. The extent of reaction was quantified by 1H NMR analysis, and changes in molecular weight and diameter were monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis. The outcome of the reactions varied markedly in terms of reaction efficiency (RE), molecular weight distribution, and average hydrodynamic diameter, for the products derived from the different maleated reagents used, as well as for the different reaction protocols.

Comparative Structural Study of Three Tetrahalophthalic Anhydrides: Recognition of X···O(anhydride) Halogen Bond and πh···O(anhydride) Interaction.

Project description:Structures of three tetrahalophthalic anhydrides (TXPA: halogen = Cl (TCPA), Br (TBPA), I (TIPA)) were studied by X-ray diffraction, and several types of halogen bonds (HaB) and lone pair···π-hole (lp···πh) contacts were revealed in their structures. HaBs involving the central oxygen atom of anhydride group (further X···O(anhydride) were recognized in the structures of TCPA and TBPA. In contrast, for the O(anhydride) atom of TIPA, only interactions with the π system (π-hole) of the anhydride ring (further lp(O)···πh) were observed. Computational studies by a number of theoretical methods (molecular electrostatic potentials, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules, the independent gradient model, natural bond orbital analyses, the electron density difference, and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory) demonstrated that the X···O(anhydride) contacts in TCPA and TBPA and lp(O)···πh in TIPA are caused by the packing effect. The supramolecular architecture of isostructural TCPA and TBPA was mainly affected by X···O(acyl) and X···X HaBs, and, for TIPA, the main contribution provided I···I HaBs.

Limonene-Based Epoxy: Anhydride Thermoset Reaction Study.

Project description:The development of epoxy thermosets from renewable resources is of paramount importance in a sustainable development context. In this paper, a novel bio-based epoxy monomer derived from limonene was synthesized without epichlorohydrine and characterized. In fact, this paper depicts the synthesis of bis-limonene oxide (bis-LO). However, intern epoxy rings generally exhibit a poor reactivity and allow reaction with anhydride. Therefore, we used a reaction model with hexahydro-4-methylphthalic anhydride to compare reactivity of terminal and interepoxy functions. We also studied the influence of methyl group on intern epoxy functions. Furthermore, the influence of epoxy:anhydride stoichiometry and initiator amount was studied. These studies allow to propose an optimized formulation of bis-LO. Finally, a bis-LO-based thermoset was obtained and characterized.

Optimisation of Glycerol and Itaconic Anhydride Polycondensation.

Project description:Glycerol polyesters have recently become objects of interest in tissue engineering. Barely known so far is poly(glycerol itaconate) (PGItc), a biocompatible, biodegradable polyester. Due to the presence of a C=C electron-acceptor moiety, it is possible to post-modify the product by Michael additions to change the properties of PGItc. Thus, using PGItc as one of the elements of cellular scaffold crosslinked in situ for bone tissue regeneration seems to be a very attractive yet unexplored solution. This work aims to optimize the synthesis of PGItc to obtain derivatives with a double bond in the side chain with the highest conversion rates. The experiments were performed with itaconic anhydride and glycerol using mathematical planning of experiments according to the Box-Behnken plan without solvent and catalyst. The input variables of the process were the ratio of the OH/COOH, temperature, and reaction time. The optimised output variables were: the degree of esterification (EDtitr), the degree of esterification calculated from the analysis of 1H NMR spectra (EDNMR), and the degree of itaconic anhydride conversion-calculation based on 13C NMR spectra (%X13CNMR). In each of statistical models, the significance of the changed synthesis parameters was determined. Optimal conditions are when OH/COOH ratio is equal to 1.5, temperature is 140 °C and time of reaction is 5 h. The higher OH/COOH ratio, temperature and longer the experiment time, the higher the value of the degree of esterification and the degree of anhydride conversion.

Liver toxicity of dichloroacetyl chloride and dichloroacetic anhydride in female MRL +/+ mice

Project description:Dichloroacetyl chloride (DCAC) is a metabolic intermediate of trichloroethene (TCE), an industrial chemical and ubiquitous environmental contaminant. TCE and its metabolites have been implicated in the induction of organ-specific and systemic autoimmunity, in the acceleration of autoimmune responses, and in the development of liver toxicity. In humans, effects of environmental toxicants are often multifactorial and detected only after long-term exposure. Therefore, we developed a small-animal model to determine mechanisms by which DCAC and related acylating agents affect liver disease. Autoimmune-prone female MRL +/+ mice were injected i.p. with 0.2 mmole/kg of DCAC or the acylating agent dichloroacetic anhydride (DCAA) in corn oil twice weekly for six weeks. We then determined changes in the liver transcriptome using microarray gene expression analysis. After exposure to DCAC or DCAA, we observed changes in liver gene expression consistent with inflammatory processes. Both toxicants up-regulated expression of acute phase response and inflammatory genes. Further, metallothionein genes were strongly up-regulated, indicating effects of the toxicants on zinc ion homeostasis and stress responses. In addition, DCAC and DCAA induced up-regulation of several genes indicative of tumorogenesis. Microarray gene expression analysis using a restricted set of genes could be a valuable tool to screen for early changes in liver function following suspected exposure to environmental toxicants. Reaction of myoglobin with 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric anhydride.

Project description:1. The extent of reaction of the protein with 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric anhydride was measured by determining the loss of lysine and the equivalent appearance of 3,3-tetramethyleneglutarimidolysine in the hydrolysate at various time-intervals. Of the 19 lysine residues in sperm-whale myoglobin, three did not react with 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric anhydride. Also, the N-terminal valine did not react. 2. Slight spectral changes were observed on modification of myoglobin. 3. Electrophoretic changes were great since the derivative was negative throughout the range pH6-8.8. 4. The derivative did not react with antisera to native sperm-whale myoglobin.
