1,3-Bis(phenyl-sufanylmeth-yl)benzene.

ABSTRACT: The complete mol-ecule of the title compound, C(20)H(18)S(2), is generated by crystallographic mirror symmetry, with two C atoms lying on the mirror plane. All of the independent atoms are contained within two planes defined by the thio-phenyl rings (C(6)S) and the central phenyl ring with the methyl-ene bridge; the r.m.s deviations of these planes are 0.012 and 0.025?Å, respectively. The two planes are almost perpendicular to one another at a dihedral angle of 80.24?(10)°. Inter-molecular C-H-? inter-actions are present in the crystal structure.

Project description:The title compound, C(24)H(24)N(2), is an enanti-omerically pure bis-aldimine, which displays twofold crystallographic symmetry, with two C atoms of the central benzene ring lying on the symmetry axis. The imine group is slightly twisted from the benzene core, with a dihedral angle of 12.72 (16)° between the benzene ring and the C=N-C(*) plane. The terminal phenyl rings make an angle of 66.44 (4)° and are oriented in opposite directions with respect to the benzene ring. In the crystal, mol-ecules inter-act weakly through a C-H⋯π inter-action involving the phenyl rings, and form chains along the 2(1) screw-axis in the [100] direction.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C22H18N4O2S2, contains two mol-ecules. In one of them, the dihedral angles between the central benzene ring and the phenyl rings are 16.97?(8) and 20.97?(8)°, while the phenyl rings make a dihedral angle of 37.87?(8)°. In the other mol-ecule, the corresponding values are 34.92?(7), 53.90?(7) and 60.68?(8)°, respectively. In each mol-ecule, two intra-molecular N-H?O hydrogen bonds generate S(6) rings and a short C-H?S contact also occurs. In the crystal, N-H?S, N-H?O, C-H?O and C-H?S inter-actions link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network.

Bicyclic Phenyl-Ethynyl Architectures: Synthesis of a 1,4-Bis(phenylbuta-1,3-diyn-1-yl) Benzene Banister.

Project description:The novel diacetylene bridged terphenylic macrocycle 1 is presented and discussed in the context of rotationally restricted "Geländer" oligomers. The 1,4-bis(phenylbuta-1,3-diyn-1-yl) benzene bridge of diacetylene 1 is significantly longer than its terphenyl backbone, forcing the bridge to bend around the central pylon. The synthesis of molecule 1 is based to a large extent on acetylene scaffolding strategies, profiting from orthogonal alkyne protection groups to close both macrocyclic subunits by oxidative acetylene coupling sequentially. The spatial arrangement and the dynamic enantiomerization process of the bicyclic target structure 1 are analyzed. In-depth NMR investigations not only reveal an unexpected spatial arrangement with both oligomer strands bent alongside the backbone, but also display the limited stability of the model compound in the presence of molecular oxygen.
