ABSTRACT: In the title dinuclear complex, [Tm(2)(C(8)H(7)O(3))(6)(C(10)H(8)N(2))(2)(H(2)O)(2)]·H(2)O, the Tm(III) atoms are coordinated by eight O atoms from four 2-(4-hy-droxy-phen-yl)acetate (HPAA) ligands and a water mol-ecule, and one N atom from a 4,4'-bipyridine ligand in a distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic geometry. While four of the HPAA ligands coordinate to just one Tm atom, the remaining two HPAA ligands bridge the two Tm atoms. In the crystal, O-H?O and O-H?N hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into a three-dimensional network.

Each Sm(III)ion is nine-coordinated by seven O atoms from four PAA ligands, one water O atom and one N atom from a bipy ligand in a distorted geometry. The PAA ligands are coordinated to the Sm(III) ion in bridging and bridging tridentate modes. The asymmetric unit also contains one uncoordinated water mol-ecule. The occurrence of numerous O-H?O and O-H?N hydrogen bonds involving coordinated and non-coordinated water mol-ecules builds up an intricate three-dimensional network.

The centrosymmetric complex consists of two nine-coordinated Nd(3+) cations, six 3-hy-droxy-cinnamate anions and two chelating 2,2'-bipyridine mol-ecules. The coordination geometry around the cations can be best described as distorted tricapped trigonal-prismatic. The carboxyl-ate groups show different coordination and bridging modes. Two of them chelate to one Nd(3+) cation, two bridge the two cations in a bis-monodentate fashion, and two chelate to one and bridge monodentately to the symmetry-related Nd(3+) cation. The dinuclear mol-ecule is surrounded by two 2,2'-bipyridine solvent and two water mol-ecules. Extensive O-H?O and O-H?N hydrogen-bonding inter-actions between the components lead to the formation of a three-dimensional network.

Four L ligands bind to each pair of Co(II) atoms in a plane, two of which bridge the two Co(II) atoms as bidentate groups while the other two coordinate to a single Co(II) atom in a monodentate mode. Two half-mol-ecules of 4,4'-bipyridine coordinate the Co(II) atoms from the upside and underside. The packing features extensice O-H?O hydrogen bonding.
