ABSTRACT: The title compound, dineodymium(III) tetra-molybdate(VI), has been prepared by a flux technique and is the second polymorph of composition Nd(2)Mo(4)O(15). The crystal structure is isotypic with those of Ce(2)Mo(4)O(15) and Pr(2)Mo(4)O(15). It features a three-dimensional network composed of distorted edge- and corner-sharing NdO(7) polyhedra, NdO(8) polyhedra, MoO(4) tetra-hedra and MoO(6) octa-hedra.

Project description:The structure of the title compound, vanadium indium penta-deca-molybdenum nona-deca-selenide, V(1.42)In(1.83)Mo(15)Se(19), is isotypic with In(2.9)Mo(15)Se(19) [Grüttner et al. (1979 ▶). Acta Cryst. B35, 285-292]. It is characterized by two cluster units Mo(6)Se(i) (8)Se(a) (6) and Mo(9)Se(i) (11)Se(a) (6) (where i represents inner and a apical atoms) that are present in a 1:1 ratio. The cluster units are centered at Wyckoff positions 2b and 2c and have point-group symmetry and , respectively. The clusters are inter-connected through additional Mo-Se bonds. In the title compound, the V(3+) cations replace the trivalent indium atoms present in In(2.9)Mo(15)Se(19), and a deficiency is observed on the monovalent indium site. One Mo, one Se and the V atom are situated on mirror planes, and two other Se atoms and the In atom are situated on threefold rotation axes.

Project description:The single-crystal of the title compound, indium pentadecamolybdenum nonadeca(sulfide/selenide), was obtained by solid state reaction with an S/Se mixture. It adopts the structure type of In(3)Mo(15)Se(19) and In(3.7)Mo(15)S(19), which are non-substituted Chevrel phases in the space group P6(3)/m. The Mo, one S/Se and two In sites have point symmetry m.. and two S/Se and one In atoms are in 3.. sites. This compound contains isolated Mo(6) and Mo(9) clusters. The shapes of clusters are octa-hedral and confacial biocta-hedral, respectively, face-capped by chalcogen atoms over each triangle face. The Mo-X bonds (X = S, Se) play an important role for the constitution of the framework. The Mo-X distances of 2.479 (2)-2.6687 (9) Å are within the ranges of average values of Mo-S and Mo-Se distances. The In atoms located on sites with m.. symmetry are partially occupied.

Unravelling the crystal structure of Nd5.8WO12-δ and Nd5.7W0.75Mo0.25O12-δ mixed ionic electronic conductors.

Project description:Mixed ionic electronic conducting ceramics Nd6-y WO12-δ (δ is the oxygen deficiency) provide excellent stability in harsh environments containing strongly reactive gases such as CO2, CO, H2, H2O or H2S. Due to this chemical stability, they are promising and cost-efficient candidate materials for gas separation, catalytic membrane reactors and protonic ceramic fuel cell technologies. As in La6-y WO12-δ, the ionic/electronic transport mechanism in Nd6-y WO12-δ is expected to be largely controlled by the crystal structure, the conclusive determination of which is still lacking. This work presents a crystallographic study of Nd5.8WO12-δ and molybdenum-substituted Nd5.7W0.75Mo0.25O12-δ prepared by the citrate complexation route. High-resolution synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction data were used in combined Rietveld refinements to unravel the crystal structure of Nd5.8WO12-δ and Nd5.7W0.75Mo0.25O12-δ. Both investigated samples crystallize in a defect fluorite crystal structure with space group Fm 3 m and doubled unit-cell parameter due to cation ordering. Mo replaces W at both Wyckoff sites 4a and 48h and is evenly distributed, in contrast with La6-y WO12-δ. X-ray absorption spectroscopy as a function of partial pressure pO2 in the near-edge regions excludes oxidation state changes of Nd (Nd3+) and W (W6+) in reducing conditions: the enhanced hydrogen permeation, i.e. ambipolar conduction, observed in Mo-substituted Nd6-y WO12-δ is therefore explained by the higher Mo reducibility and the creation of additional - disordered - oxygen vacancies.

Project description:The title compound, dineodymium(III) tris-[tungstate(VI)], is a member of the Eu(2)(WO(4))(3) structure family and crystallizes isotypically with other rare earth tungstates and molybdates of this formula type. The structure is a derivative of the scheelite (CaWO(4)) structure and can be considered as an ordered defect variant with a threefold scheelite supercell and one rare earth (RE) site unoccupied. The Nd(3+) cations are coordinated by eight O atoms in form of a distorted bicapped trigonal prism. The two unique W cations are tetra-hedrally surrounded by O atoms. One WO(4) tetra-hedron has 2 symmetry and is relatively undistorted whereas the other tetra-hedron differs considerably from an ideal geometry. This is caused by an additional remote O atom at a distance of 2.149?(4)?Å. The resulting WO(4 + 1) polyhedra form W(2)O(8) dimers through edge-sharing. Together with the WO(4) and NdO(8) units, the three-dimensional set-up is accomplished.

Comparative calculation of EPR spectral parameters in [Mo(V)OX4]-, [Mo(V)OX5]2-, and [Mo(V)OX4(H2O)]- complexes.

Project description:The EPR spectral parameters, i.e. g-tensors and molybdenum hyperfine couplings, for several d(1) systems of the general formula [Mo(V)EX(4)](n-), [Mo(V)OX(5)](2-), and [Mo(V)OX(4)(H(2)O)](-) (E = O, N; X = F, Cl, Br; n = 1 or 2) were calculated using Density Functional Theory. The influence of basis sets, their contraction scheme, the type of exchange-correlation functional, the amount of Hartree-Fock exchange, molecular geometry, and relativistic effects on the calculated EPR spectra parameters have been discussed. The g-tensors and molybdenum hyperfine coupling parameters were calculated using a relativistic Hamiltonian coupled with several LDA, GGA, and 'hybrid' exchange-correlation functionals and uncontracted full-electron DGauss DZVP basis sets. The calculated EPR parameters are found to be sensitive to the Mo=E distance and E=Mo-Cl angle, and thus the choice of starting molecular geometry should be considered as an important factor in predicting the g-tensors and hyperfine coupling constants in oxo-molybdenum compounds. In the present case, the GGA exchange-correlation functionals provide a better agreement between the theory and the experiment.

Anisotropic Resistivity Size Effect in Epitaxial Mo(001) and Mo(011) Layers.

Project description:Mo(001) and Mo(011) layers with thickness d = 4-400 nm are sputter-deposited onto MgO(001) and α-Al2O3(112¯0) substrates and their resistivity is measured in situ and ex situ at room temperature and 77 K in order to quantify the resistivity size effect. Both Mo(001) and Mo(011) layers are epitaxial single crystals and exhibit a resistivity increase with decreasing d due to electron surface scattering that is well described by the classical Fuchs and Sondheimer model. Data fitting yields room temperature effective electron mean free paths λ*= 14.4 ± 0.3 and 11.7 ± 0.3 nm, respectively, indicating an anisotropy with a smaller resistivity size effect for the Mo(011) orientation. This is attributed to a smaller average Fermi velocity component perpendicular to (011) surfaces, causing less surface scattering and a suppressed resistivity size effect. First-principles electronic structure calculations in combination with Boltzmann transport simulations predict an orientation dependent transport with a more pronounced resistivity increase for Mo(001) than Mo(011). This is in agreement with the measurements, confirming the effect of the Fermi surface shape on the thin-film resistivity. The predicted anisotropy λ001*/λ011* = 1.57 is in reasonable agreement with 1.66 and 1.23 measured at 77 and 295 K. The overall results indicate that the resistivity size effect in Mo is relatively small, with a measured product of the bulk resistivity times the effective electron mean free path ρoλ* = (7.7 ± 0.3) and (6.2 ± 0.2) × 10-16 Ωm2 for Mo(001) and Mo(011) layers. The latter value is in excellent agreement with the first-principles-predicted ρoλ = 5.99 × 10-16 Ωm2 and is 10% and 40% smaller than the reported measured ρoλ for Cu and W, respectively, indicating the promise of Mo as an alternate conductor for narrow interconnects.

Crystal growth and negative thermal expansion properties of a Y2Mo4O15 single crystal.

Project description:A bulk-size single crystal of Y2Mo4O15 with 20 × 11 × 8 mm3 was successfully grown by the top-seed solution growth (TSSG) method. The full-width at half maximum of (100) and (010) crystal faces is 37 and 27 arcsec, respectively. The thermal conductivity coefficients κ 11, κ 22, κ 33, and κ 13 are determined to be 1.519, 2.097, 0.445, and 0.997 W m-1 K-1, respectively. It is worth noting that the Y2Mo4O15 crystal shows significant anisotropy thermal expansion properties, which exhibits a negative thermal expansion along the b-axis (α 22 = -5.11 × 10-6 K-1). The crystal structure analysis shows that the shrinking of Mo-O bond lengths along the b-axis with the increasing temperature would be the main origin of the negative thermal expansion properties for Y2Mo4O15 crystal, which does not comply with the current mechanism.
