4-Chloro-N-methyl-2-(1,2,3,4-tetra-hydro-isoquinolin-1-yl)aniline.

ABSTRACT: The racemic title compound, C(16)H(17)ClN(2), shows a tetra-hydro-isoquinoline skeleton with a 4-chloro-N-methyl-aniline group linked to the C atom at position 1. The dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 85.82?(4)°. An intra-molecular N-H?N hydrogen bond occurs. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked through inter-molecular C-H?? inter-actions.

Project description:The title compound, C(29)H(27)NO(4)S(2), was synthesized by reaction of trans-rac-4-(hydroxy-meth-yl)-2-phenethyl-3-(thio-phen-2-yl)-3,4-dihydro-isoquinolin-1(2H)-one and 4-methyl-benzene-1-sulfonyl chloride in the presence of Et(3)N in CH(2)Cl(2). The relative orientations of the benzene ring (A) of the 3,4-dihydro-isoquinolinone ring system, the thio-phene ring (B), the benzene ring (C) of the methyl-benzene group and the phenyl ring (D) result in the following dihedral angles: A/B = 80.91?(16), A/C = 22.79?(18), A/D = 9.9?(2), B/C = 80.73?(19), B/D = 88.9?(2) and C/D = 29.9?(2)°. The crystal structure is stabilized by weak inter-molecular C-H?O hydrogen bonds and C-H?? inter-actions.

Project description:In the title compound, C10H11NO2, two independent but virtually superimposable mol-ecules, A and B, comprise the asymmetric unit. The heterocyclic ring in each mol-ecule has a screw-boat conformation, and the methyl-hydroxyl group occupies a position to one side of this ring with N-C-C-O torsion angles of -55.30 (15) (mol-ecule A) and -55.94 (16)° (mol-ecule B). In the crystal, O-H⋯O and N-H⋯O hydrogen bonding leads to 11-membered {⋯HNCO⋯HO⋯HNC2O} heterosynthons, involving three different mol-ecules, which are edge-shared to generate a supra-molecular chain along the a axis. Inter-actions of the type C-H⋯O provide additional stability to the chains, and link these into a three-dimensional architecture.

The conformations of the chains and their packing differ markedly in the two polymorphs.

Further weak C-H?O hydrogen bonds link these ribbons into a two-dimensional mol-ecular assembly.

The N-heterocycle in the structure adopts a half-chair conformation. The dihedral angle between the benzene rings is 77.29 (13)°. There are three ill-resolved water molecules of crystallization in the structure (one of them rotationally disordered about a threefold axis) involved in short contacts probably due to hydrogen bonding.
