ABSTRACT: In the title zwitterionic compound, C(15)H(19)NO(2)S, the six-membered heterocycle adopts a sofa conformation. The negative charge is delocalized along the carbonyl and enolate system on the ring and the positive charge is localized on the S atom. Two inter-molecular C-H?O inter-actions help to establish the packing.

The 4-substituted aromatic ring is bent away from the pyridine ring by 59.5?(2)° (for the major disordered thienyl component) in order to avoid crowding the cyanide substituent. In the crystal, two mol-ecules are linked by a pair of N-H?O hydrogen bonds to form a centrosymmetric dimer. The thienyl ring is disordered over two sites in a 72.7?(2):27.3 ratio.

Project description:In the mol-ecule of the title compound, C(20)H(13)FN(2)O, the fluoro-phenyl ring is oriented at a dihedral angle of 72.76 (3)° with respect to the fused benzene ring. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular N-H⋯O, C-H⋯O and C-H⋯F inter-actions link the mol-ecules into chains. π-π contacts between the quinoline and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.918 (3) Å] may further stabilize the structure. A weak C-H⋯π inter-action is also present. The O atom and two of the CH(2) groups of the quinoline ring system are disordered over two positions. The O atom was refined with occupancies of 0.489 (17) and 0.511 (17), while C and H atoms were refined with occupancies of 0.435 (13) and 0.565 (13).

Project description:Single crystals of the title compound, C(10)H(13)OS(+)·Br(-), were obtained from ethyl acetate/ethyl ether after reaction of acetophenone with hydro-bromic acid and dimethyl-sulfoxide. The carbonyl group is almost coplanar with the neighbouring phenyl ring [O-C-C-C = 178.9?(2)°]. The sulfanium group shows a trigonal-pyramidal geometry at the S atom.
