Project description:Co3V2O8 thin nanoplates are firstly described as a kind of electrode material for supercapacitors. More importantly, from electrochemical measurements, the obtained Co3V2O8 nanoplate electrode shows a good specific capacitance (0.5 A g(-1), 739 F g(-1)) and cycling stability (704 F g(-1) retained after 2000 cycles). This study essentially offers a new kind of metal vanadium oxides as electrochemical active material for the development of supercapacitors.

Project description:Surface redox processes involving oxygen atom exchange are fundamental in catalytic reactions mediated by metal oxides. These processes are often difficult to uncover due to changes in the surface stoichiometry and atomic arrangement. Here we employ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to study vanadium oxide supported on titanium dioxide, which is of relevance as a catalyst in, e.g., nitrogen oxide emission abatement for environmental protection. The observations reveal a reversible transformation of the vanadium oxide surface between an ordered and disordered state, concomitant with a reversible change in the vanadium oxidation state, when alternating between oxidizing and reducing conditions. The transformation depends on the anatase titanium dioxide surface termination and the vanadium oxide layer thickness, suggesting that the properties of vanadium oxide are sensitive to the supporting oxide. These atomic-resolution observations offer a basis for rationalizing previous reports on shape-sensitive catalytic properties.Redox processes in metal oxide surfaces can exhibit structure sensitivities which are difficult to uncover. Here, the authors use atomic-resolution imaging to demonstrate facet dependent alterations in the surfaces of supported vanadium oxide upon reduction and oxidation.

Project description:The excellent properties of nanomaterials have been confirmed in many fields, but their effects on plants are still unclear. In this study, different concentrations of bismuth vanadate (BV) were added to the growth medium to analyze the growth of seedlings, including taproots, lateral roots, leaf stomata, root activity, and superoxide anion O2 .- generation. Gene expression levels related to root growth were determined by quantitative PCR in Arabidopsis thaliana. The results showed that BV promoted the growth of taproots and the development of lateral roots, enhanced the length of the extension zone in roots, increased the number and size of leaf stomata and root activity, reduced the accumulation of ROS in seedlings, and changed the expression levels of genes related to polyamines or hormones. At the same time, we investigated the antibacterial activity of BV against a variety of common pathogens causing crop diseases. The results showed that BV could effectively inhibit the growth of Fusarium wilt of cotton and rice sheath blight. These results provide a new prospect for the development of nanomaterial-assisted plants, which is expected to become one of the ways to solve the problem of controlling and promoting the development of plants. At the same time, it also provides a reference for the study of the effect of BV on plants.

Project description:The water-splitting reaction provides a promising mechanism to store renewable energies in the form of hydrogen fuel. The oxidation half-reaction, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is a complex four-electron process that constitutes an efficiency bottleneck in water splitting. Here we report a highly active OER catalyst, cobalt vanadium oxide. The catalyst is designed on the basis of a volcano plot of metal-OH bond strength and activity. The catalyst can be synthesized by a facile hydrothermal route. The most active pure-phase material (a-CoVO x ) is X-ray amorphous and provides a 10 mA cm-2 current density at an overpotential of 347 mV in 1 M KOH electrolyte when immobilized on a flat substrate. The synthetic method can also be applied to coat a high-surface-area substrate such as nickel foam. On this three-dimensional substrate, the a-CoVO x catalyst is highly active, reaching 10 mA cm-2 at 254 mV overpotential, with a Tafel slope of only 35 mV dec-1. This work demonstrates a-CoVO x as a promising electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution and validates M-OH bond strength as a practical descriptor in OER catalysis.

Project description:The syntheses of two noncentrosymmetric (NCS) vanadium oxide-fluoride compounds that originate from the same synthetic reagent concentrations are presented. Hydrothermal and low-temperature syntheses allow the isolation of metastable products that may form new phases (or decompose) upon heating and allow creation of chemically similar but structurally different materials. NCS materials synthesis has been a long-standing goal in inorganic chemistry: in this article, we compare two chemically similar NCS inorganic materials, NaVOF(4)(H(2)O) (I) and NaVO(2-x)F(2+x) (II; x = 1/3). These materials originate from the same, identical reagent mixtures but are synthesized at different temperatures: 100 °C and 150 °C, respectively. Compound I crystallizes in Pna2(1): a = 9.9595(4) Å, b = 9.4423(3) Å, and c = 4.8186(2) Å. Compound II crystallizes in P2(1): a = 6.3742(3) Å, b = 3.5963(2) Å, c = 14.3641(7) Å, and ? = 110.787(3)°. Both materials display second-harmonic-generation activity; however, compound I is type 1 non-phase-matchable, whereas compound II is type 1 phase-matchable.

Project description:The development of batteries that can be recharged directly by light, without the need for external solar cells or external power supplies, has recently gained interest for powering off-grid devices. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) has been studied as a promising photocathode for zinc-ion batteries because it can both store energy and harvest light. However, the efficiency of the photocharging process depends on electrode structure and charge transport layers. In this work, we report photocathodes using zinc oxide as an electron transport and hole blocking layer on top of which we synthesise VO2. The improved interface and charge separation in these photocathodes offer an improvement in photo-conversion efficiency from ∼0.18 to ∼0.51% compared to previous work on mixed VO2 photocathodes. In addition, a good capacity retention of ∼73% was observed after 500 cycles. The proposed stacked photocathodes reduce the battery light charging time by 3-fold and are therefore an important step towards making this technology more viable.

Project description:Efficiency of water oxidation catalysts in terms of overpotential, current density, and voltage stability over time with facile methods of their fabrication remains a key challenge in developing competent mechanisms of storing energy in the form of green hydrogen fuels. In this work, a rapid one-step aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) method is employed to synthesize amorphous and highly active cobalt-vanadium mixed oxide catalysts (CoVOx) directly over fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. Morphological and structural characterizations made by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques revealed the formation of pure-phase amorphous films with a gradual variation of topography as a function of deposition time. Of these films, the most active film (CoVOx-20) was obtained in 20 min deposition, showing a spongy networking of interwoven nanofibers with a homogeneous distribution of 3-4 nm pores, achieving an overpotential of 308 mV at 10 mA/cm2 current density. A much higher current density of 175 mA/cm2 could be achieved just at 380 mV of overpotential with Tafel slope as low as 62 mV/dec for this whole range while exhibiting long-term stability. Mass activity, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data, and the estimation of electrochemically active surface area all endorsed this high catalytic performance of CoVOx-20, which is unprecedented for a low-cost, upscalable, and relatively less conductive substrate such as FTO used here. Our findings, thus, not only highlight the benefits of using AACVD in preparing two-dimensional amorphous catalysts but also prove the high efficiency of CoVOx materials thus obtained, as outlined in a plausible reaction mechanism.

Project description:The visible light photooxidative performance of a new high-nuclearity molecular bismuth vanadium oxide cluster, H3[{Bi(dmso)3}4V13O40], is reported. Photocatalytic activity studies show faster reaction kinetics under anaerobic conditions, suggesting an oxygen-dependent quenching of the photoexcited cluster species. Further mechanistic analysis shows that the reaction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hydroxyl radicals which act as oxidant. Trapping experiments using ethanol as a hydroxyl radical scavenger show significantly decreased photocatalytic substrate oxidation in the presence of EtOH. Photocatalytic performance analyses using monochromatic visible light irradiation show that the quantum efficiency ? for indigo photooxidation is strongly dependent on the irradiation wavelength, with higher quantum efficiencies being observed at shorter wavelengths (?395nm ca. 15%). Recycling tests show that the compound can be employed as homogeneous photooxidation catalyst multiple times without loss of catalytic activity. High turnover numbers (TON ca. 1200) and turnover frequencies up to TOF ca. 3.44 min(-1) are observed, illustrating the practical applicability of the cluster species.

Project description:Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage but are plagued by the lack of cathode materials with both excellent rate capability and adequate cycle life span. We overcome this barrier by designing a novel hierarchically porous structure of Zn-vanadium oxide material. This Zn0.3V2O5·1.5H2O cathode delivers a high specific capacity of 426 mA·h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 and exhibits an unprecedented superlong-term cyclic stability with a capacity retention of 96% over 20,000 cycles at 10 A g-1. Its electrochemical mechanism is elucidated. The lattice contraction induced by zinc intercalation and the expansion caused by hydronium intercalation cancel each other and allow the lattice to remain constant during charge/discharge, favoring cyclic stability. The hierarchically porous structure provides abundant contact with electrolyte, shortens ion diffusion path, and provides cushion for relieving strain generated during electrochemical processes, facilitating both fast kinetics and long-term stability.
