Octachlorodibenzodioxin (OCDD) forms spontaneously from pentachlorophenol (PCP) on the surfaces of Fe(III)-saturated smectite clay. (1) Here, we used in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) methods and quantum mechanical calculations to determine the mechanism by which this reaction is initiated.
