Synthesis, structure and ?-delocalization of a phosphaalkenyl based neutral PNP-pincer.

ABSTRACT: Preparation, characterization and structural properties of a novel bis-phosphaalkenyl based PNP-pincer are reported. In this pincer the ?-system is delocalized over all three donor sites, which was demonstrated with DFT calculations, UV-Vis measurements and structural findings. As a consequence of this extended delocalization the ?-system reveals near coplanarity which is evident from the first crystal structure for an uncomplexed bisphosphaalkenyl PNP-pincer.

Synthesis and characterization of pyrrole-based group 4 PNP pincer complexes.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of several group 4 metal complexes featuring a central anionic pyrrole moiety connected via CH2 linkers to two phosphine donors is described. Treatment of [P(NH)P-iPr] with [MCl4(THF)2] (M = Zr, Hf) in the presence of base yields the dimeric complexes [M(PNPiPr)(μ-Cl)(Cl)2]2 featuring two bridging chloride ligands. These complexes react with sodium cyclopentadienyl and SiMe3I to give the mononuclear complexes [M(PNPiPr)(η5-Cp)(Cl)2] and [M(PNPiPr)(I)3], respectively. The latter react with MeMgBr to form the trialkyl complexes [M(PNPiPr)(Me)3]. Upon treatment of [Ti(NMe2)4] with [P(NH)P-iPr] a complex with the general formula [Ti(PNPiPr)(NMe2)3] is obtained. DFT calculations revealed that the most stable species is [Ti(κ1N- PNPiPr)(NMe2)3] featuring a κ1N-bound PNP ligand. When [P(NH)P-iPr] is reacted with [Ti(NMe2)4] in CH2Cl2 complex [Ti(PNPiPr)(Cl)2(NMe2)] is formed. Treatment of a solution of [P(NH)P-iPr] and [Zr(NMe2)4] with SiMe3Br affords the anionic seven-coordinate tetrabromo complex [Zr(PNPiPr)(Br)4][H2NMe2]. The corresponding hafnium complex [Hf(PNPiPr)(Br)4][H2NEt2] is obtained in similar fashion by utilizing [Hf(NEt2)4] as metal precursor. All complexes are characterized by means of NMR spectroscopy. Synthesis and reactivity of BINEPINE-based chiral Fe(II) PNP pincer complexes.

Project description:AbstractA new asymmetric chiral PNP ligand based on the 2,6-diaminopyridine scaffold featuring a R-BINEPINE moiety was prepared. Treatment of anhydrous FeX2 (X = Cl, Br) with 1 equiv of PNP-iPr,BIN at room temperature afforded the coordinatively unsaturated paramagnetic complexes [Fe(PNP-iPr,BIN)X2]. The structure of [Fe(PNP-iPr,BIN)Cl2] is described. Both complexes react readily with the strong ?-acceptor ligand CO in solution to afford selectively the diamagnetic complexes trans-[Fe(PNP-iPr,BIN)(CO)X2] in quantitative yield. Due the lability of the CO ligand, these complexes are only stable under a CO atmosphere and isolation in pure form was not possible. The preparation of the carbonyl hydride complex [Fe(PNP-iPr,BIN)(H)(CO)Br] was achieved albeit in low yields via a one pot procedure by treatment of [Fe(PNP-iPr,BINEP)Br2] with CO and subsequent reaction with Na[HBEt3]. This complex was obtained as an inseparable mixture of two diastereomers in a ca. 1:1 ratio and was tested as catalyst for the hydrogenation of ketones. The catalyst showed acceptable activity under mild conditions (5 bar H2, room temperature) with yields up to >99 % within 18 h.Graphical abstract

Synthesis and Characterization of Hydrido Carbonyl Molybdenum and Tungsten PNP Pincer Complexes.

Project description:In the present study the Mo(0) and W(0) complexes [M(PNP)(CO)3] as well as seven-coordinate cationic hydridocarbonyl Mo(II) and W(II) complexes of the type [M(PNP)(CO)3H]+, featuring PNP pincer ligands based on 2,6-diaminopyridine, have been prepared and fully characterized. The synthesis of Mo(0) complexes [Mo(PNP)(CO)3] was accomplished by treatment of [Mo(CO)3(CH3CN)3] with the respective PNP ligands. The analogous W(0) complexes were prepared by reduction of the bromocarbonyl complexes [W(PNP)(CO)3Br]+ with NaHg. These intermediates were obtained from the known dinuclear complex [W(CO)4(?-Br)Br]2, prepared in situ from W(CO)6 and stoichiometric amounts of Br2. Addition of HBF4 to [M(PNP)(CO)3] resulted in clean protonation at the molybdenum and tungsten centers to generate the Mo(II) and W(II) hydride complexes [M(PNP)(CO)3H]+. The protonation is fully reversible, and upon addition of NEt3 as base the Mo(0) and W(0) complexes [M(PNP)(CO)3] are regenerated quantitatively. All heptacoordinate complexes exhibit fluxional behavior in solution. The mechanism of the dynamic process of the hydrido carbonyl complexes was investigated by means of DFT calculations, revealing that it occurs in a single step. The structures of representative complexes were determined by X-ray single-crystal analyses.

Synthesis and characterization of bis- and tris-carbonyl Mn(I) and Re(I) PNP pincer complexes.

Project description:AbstractA series of neutral bis- and cationic tris-carbonyl complexes of the types cis-[M(κ3 P,N,P-PNP)(CO)2Y] and [M(κ3 P,N,P-PNP)(CO)3]+ was prepared by reacting [M(CO)5Y] (M = Mn, Re; Y = Cl or Br) with PNP pincer ligands derived from the 2,6-diaminopyridine, 2,6-dihydroxypyridine, and 2,6-lutidine scaffolds. With the most bulky ligand PNPNH-tBu, the cationic square-pyramidal 16e bis-carbonyl complex [Mn(PNPNH-tBu)(CO)2]+ was obtained. In contrast, in the case of rhenium, the 18e complex [Re(PNPNH-tBu)(CO)3]+ was formed. The dissociation of CO was studied by means of DFT calculation revealing in agreement with experimental findings that CO release from [M(κ3 P,N,P-PNP)(CO)3]+ is in general endergonic, while for [Mn(κ3 P,N,P-PNPNH-tBu)(CO)3]+, this process is thermodynamically favored. Synthesis and Structural Dynamics of Five-Coordinate Rh(III) and Ir(III) PNP and PONOP Pincer Complexes.

Project description:The synthesis and characterization of a homologous series of five-coordinate rhodium(III) and iridium(III) complexes of PNP (2,6-( tBu2PCH2)2C5H3N) and PONOP (2,6-( tBu2PO)2C5H3N) pincer ligands are described: [M(PNP)(biph)][BArF4] (M = Rh, 1a; Ir, 1b; biph = 2,2'-biphenyl; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) and [M(PONOP)(biph)][BArF4] (M = Rh, 2a; Ir, 2b). These complexes are structurally dynamic in solution, exhibiting pseudorotation of the biph ligand on the 1H NMR time scale (? G? ca. 60 kJ mol-1) and, in the case of the flexible PNP complexes, undergoing interconversion between helical and puckered pincer ligand conformations (? G? ca. 10 kJ mol-1). Remarkably, the latter is sufficiently facile that it persists in the solid state, leading to temperature-dependent disorder in the associated X-ray crystal structures. Reaction of 1 and 2 with CO occurs for the iridium congeners 1b and 2b, leading to the formation of sterically congested carbonyl derivatives.

Electrocatalytic Azide Oxidation Mediated by a Rh(PNP) Pincer Complex.

Project description:One-electron oxidation of the rhodium(I) azido complex [Rh(N3 )(PNP)] (5), bearing the neutral, pyridine-based PNP ligand 2,6-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)pyridine, leads to instantaneous and selective formation of the mononuclear rhodium(I) dinitrogen complex [Rh(N2 )(PNP)]+ (9+ ). Interestingly, complex 5 also acts as a catalyst for electrochemical N3- oxidation (Ep ?-0.23?V vs. Fc+/0 ) in the presence of excess azide. This is of potential relevance for the design of azide-based and direct ammonia fuel cells, expelling only harmless dinitrogen as an exhaust gas.

Experimental and computational study of alkane dehydrogenation catalyzed by a carbazolide-based rhodium PNP pincer complex.

Project description:A rhodium complex based on the bis-phosphine carbazolide pincer ligand was investigated in the context of alkane dehydrogenation and in comparison with its iridium analogue. (carb-PNP)RhH2 was found to catalyze cyclooctane/t-butylethylene (COA/TBE) transfer dehydrogenation with a turnover frequency up to 10 min-1 and turnover numbers up to 340, in marked contrast with the inactive Ir analogue. TONs were limited by catalyst decomposition. Through a combination of mechanistic, experimental and computational (DFT) studies the difference between the Rh and Ir analogues was found to be attributable to the much greater accessibility of the 14-electron (carb-PNP)M(i) fragment in the case of Rh. In contrast, Ir is more strongly biased toward the M(iii) oxidation state. Thus (carb-PNP)RhH2 but not (carb-PNP)IrH2 can be dehydrogenated by sacrificial hydrogen acceptors, particularly TBE. The rate-limiting segment of the (carb-PNP)Rh-catalyzed COA/TBE transfer dehydrogenation cycle is found to be the dehydrogenation of COA. Within this segment, the rate-determining step is calculated to be (carb-PNP)Rh(cyclooctyl)(H) undergoing formation of a β-H agostic intermediate, while the reverse step (loss of a β-H agostic interaction) is rate-limiting for hydrogenation of the acceptors TBE and ethylene. Such a step has not previously been proposed as rate-limiting in the context of alkane dehydrogenation, nor, to our knowledge, has the reverse step been proposed as rate-limiting for olefin hydrogenation.

Electrocatalytic Nitrogen Reduction on a Molybdenum Complex Bearing a PNP Pincer Ligand.

Project description:Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction (N2R) mediated by well-defined molecular catalysts is poorly developed by comparison with other reductive electrocatalytic transformations. Herein, we explore the viability of electrocatalytic N2R mediated by a molecular Mo-PNP complex. A careful choice of acid, electrode material, and electrolyte mitigates electrode-mediated HER under direct electrolysis and affords up to 11.7 equiv of NH3 (Faradaic efficiency < 43%) at -1.89 V versus Fc+/Fc. The addition of a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mediator has no effect. The data presented are rationalized by an initial electron transfer (ET) that sets the applied bias needed and further reveal an important impact of [Mo] concentration, thereby pointing to potential bimolecular steps (e.g., N2 splitting) as previously proposed during chemically driven N2R catalysis. Finally, facile reductive protonation of [Mo(N)Br(HPNP)] with pyridinium acids is demonstrated.

Project description:AbstractKumada-Corriu and Negishi cross-coupling reactions, catalyzed efficiently by a Ni(II) PNP pincer complex containing a triazine backbone, are described. The catalyst is able to react with both activated and inactivated aryl halides including chlorides as well as phenol derivatives such as tosylates and mesylates to give the corresponding cross-coupling products in good to excellent isolated yields. A high diversity of substrates was tested under moderate conditions for both types of reactions.Graphical abstract

Carbon dioxide hydrogenation catalysed by well-defined Mn(i) PNP pincer hydride complexes.

Project description:The catalytic reduction of carbon dioxide is of great interest for its potential as a hydrogen storage method and to use carbon dioxide as C-1 feedstock. In an effort to replace expensive noble metal-based catalysts with efficient and cheap earth-abundant counterparts, we report the first example of Mn(i)-catalysed hydrogenation of CO2 to HCOOH. The hydride Mn(i) catalyst [Mn(PNPNH-iPr)(H)(CO)2] showed higher stability and activity than its Fe(ii) analogue. TONs up to 10 000 and quantitative yields were obtained after 24 h using DBU as the base at 80 °C and 80 bar total pressure. At catalyst loadings as low as 0.002 mol%, TONs greater than 30 000 could be achieved in the presence of LiOTf as the co-catalyst, which are among the highest activities reported for base-metal catalysed CO2 hydrogenations to date.
