Apolipoprotein E (apoE) is involved in the risk to develop sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since impaired central acetylcholine (ACh) function is a hallmark of AD, apoE may influence ACh function by modulating muscarinic ACh receptors (mAChRs).
