Deoxyhemoglobin reduces nitrite to nitric oxide (NO). In order to study the effect of the hemoglobin quaternary conformation on the nitrite reaction, we compared T-state deoxyhemoglobin with R-state deoxyhemoglobin produced by reacting hemoglobin with carboxypeptidase-A prior to deoxygenation.
