Persisting water droplets on water surfaces.

ABSTRACT: Droplets of various liquids may float on the respective surfaces for extended periods of time prior to coalescence. We explored the features of delayed coalescence in highly purified water. Droplets several millimeters in diameter were released from a nozzle onto a water surface. Results showed that droplets had float times up to hundreds of milliseconds. When the droplets did coalesce, they did so in stepwise fashion, with periods of quiescence interspersed between periods of coalescence. Up to six steps were noted before the droplet finally vanished. Droplets were released in a series, which allowed the detection of unexpected abrupt float-time changes throughout the duration of the series. Factors such as electrostatic charge, droplet size, and sideways motion had considerable effect on droplet lifetime, as did reduction of pressure, which also diminished the number of steps needed for coalescence. On the basis of present observations and recent reports, a possible mechanism for noncoalescence is considered.

Efficient water scavenging by cooling superhydrophobic surfaces to obtain jumping water droplets from air.

Project description:Dew collection is significant in harvesting water and relieving water shortages in arid regions. However, current methods for collecting dew or steam are mainly focusing on the millimeter-sized droplets condensed on the superhydrophobic surfaces. Here, we present a concept for harvesting micro droplets that can spontaneously bounce on the cooling superhydrophobic aluminum surface with randomly micro-nano composite structures, which were fabricated by using a two-step surface structural process. Moreover, an integrated device has been developed, which consists of a triboelectric nanogenerator and the superhydrophobic aluminum sheet. We experimentally explained that the triboelectric nanogenerator, which provides an external electric field by converting wind energy to electric energy with DC voltage pulse peaks of about 60 V, can be utilized to enhance the collection capacity of the jumping water droplets.

Interaction Forces between Water Droplets and Solid Surfaces across Air Films.

Project description:Wetting of solid surfaces occurs when the intervening air film between a water droplet and a solid surface ruptures. Although this rupturing phenomenon is well known, the underlying mechanism has not yet been well understood. In this work, the rupture of intervening air films is systematically studied by measuring the spatiotemporal thickness profiles of the air films between droplets of deionized water and flat solid surfaces using a synchronized triwavelength reflection interferometry microscope. It has been shown that the critical rupture thickness of the air film (h c) depends on the surface hydrophobicity of solid surfaces. The h c value was increased from 50 nm on a hydrophobic surface having an equilibrium water contact angle (?w) of 96° to 1.42 ?m on a hydrophilic surface having a ?w of 25°. In addition, an increase in the critical rupture thickness with decreasing surface hydrophobicity was found to be applicable not only to chemically treated quartz surfaces but also to a variety of natural mineral surfaces. By determining the pressure within the air films, we have shown that a strong attractive force is present between water droplets and hydrophilic surfaces, thereby accelerating the draining of air films. The measured forces might be of electrostatic origin, and the forces become less attractive with increasing hydrophobicity of solid surfaces. The present result provides a fundamental insight into the rupture of air films from the perspective of surface forces.

Hanging droplets from liquid surfaces.

Project description:Natural and man-made robotic systems use the interfacial tension between two fluids to support dense objects on liquid surfaces. Here, we show that coacervate-encased droplets of an aqueous polymer solution can be hung from the surface of a less dense aqueous polymer solution using surface tension. The forces acting on and the shapes of the hanging droplets can be controlled. Sacs with homogeneous and heterogeneous surfaces are hung from the surface and, by capillary forces, form well-ordered arrays. Locomotion and rotation can be achieved by embedding magnetic microparticles within the assemblies. Direct contact of the droplet with air enables in situ manipulation and compartmentalized cascading chemical reactions with selective transport. Applications including functional microreactors, motors, and biomimetic robots are evident.

Ricocheting Droplets Moving on Super-Repellent Surfaces.

Project description:Droplet bouncing on repellent solid surfaces (e.g., the lotus leaf effect) is a common phenomenon that has aroused interest in various fields. However, the scenario of a droplet bouncing off another droplet (either identical or distinct chemical composition) while moving on a solid material (i.e., ricocheting droplets, droplet billiards) is scarcely investigated, despite it having fundamental implications in applications including self-cleaning, fluid transport, and heat and mass transfer. Here, the dynamics of bouncing collisions between liquid droplets are investigated using a friction-free platform that ensures ultrahigh locomotion for a wide range of probing liquids. A general prediction on bouncing droplet-droplet contact time is elucidated and bouncing droplet-droplet collision is demonstrated to be an extreme case of droplet bouncing on surfaces. Moreover, the maximum deformation and contact time are highly dependent on the position where the collision occurs (i.e., head-on or off-center collisions), which can now be predicted using parameters (i.e., effective velocity, effective diameter) through the concept of an effective interaction region. The results have potential applications in fields ranging from microfluidics to repellent coatings.

Rotating Surfaces Promote the Shedding of Droplets.

Project description:Achieving rapid shedding of droplets from solid surfaces has received substantial attention because of its diverse applications. Previous studies have focused on minimizing contact times of liquid droplets interacting with stationary surfaces, yet little consideration has been given to that of moving surfaces. Here, we report a different scenario: A water droplet rapidly detaches from micro/nanotextured rotating surfaces in an intriguing doughnut shape, contributing to about 40% contact time reduction compared with that on stationary surfaces. The doughnut-shaped bouncing droplet fragments into satellites and spontaneously scatters, thus avoiding further collision with the substrate. In particular, the contact time is highly dependent on impact velocities of droplets, beyond previous descriptions of classical inertial-capillary scaling law. Our results not only deepen the fundamental understanding of droplet dynamics on moving surfaces but also suggest a synergistic mechanism to actively regulate the contact time by coupling the kinematics of droplet impingement and surface rotation.

Trampolining of Droplets on Hydrophobic Surfaces Using Electrowetting.

Project description:Droplet detachment from solid surfaces is an essential part of many industrial processes. Electrowetting is a versatile tool for handling droplets in digital microfluidics, not only on plain surface but also in 3-D manner. Here, we report for the first time droplet trampolining using electrowetting. With the information collected by the real-time capacitor sensing system, we are able to synchronize the actuation signal with the spreading of the droplet upon impacting. Since electrowetting is applied each time the droplet impacts the substrate and switched off during recoiling of the droplet, the droplet gains additional momentum upon each impact and is able to jump higher during successive detachment. We have modelled the droplet trampolining behavior with a periodically driven harmonic oscillator, and the experiments showed sound agreement with theoretical predictions. The findings from this study will offer valuable insights to applications that demands vertical transportation of the droplets between chips arranged in parallel, or detachment of droplets from solid surfaces.

Wetting theory for small droplets on textured solid surfaces.

Project description:Conventional wetting theories on rough surfaces with Wenzel, Cassie-Baxter, and Penetrate modes suggest the possibility of tuning the contact angle by adjusting the surface texture. Despite decades of intensive study, there are still many experimental results that are not well understood because conventional wetting theory, which assumes an infinite droplet size, has been used to explain measurements of finite-sized droplets. Here, we suggest a wetting theory applicable to a wide range of droplet size for the three wetting modes by analyzing the free energy landscape with many local minima originated from the finite size. We find that the conventional theory predicts the contact angle at the global minimum if the droplet size is about 40 times or larger than the characteristic scale of the surface roughness, regardless of wetting modes. Furthermore, we obtain the energy barrier of pinning which can induce the contact angle hysteresis as a function of geometric factors. We validate our theory against experimental results on an anisotropic rough surface. In addition, we discuss the wetting on non-uniformly rough surfaces. Our findings clarify the extent to which the conventional wetting theory is valid and expand the physical understanding of wetting phenomena of small liquid drops on rough surfaces.

Identities for droplets with circular footprint on tilted surfaces.

Project description:Exact mathematical identities are presented between the relevant parameters of droplets displaying circular contact boundary based on flat tilted surfaces. Two of the identities are derived from the force balance, and one from the torque balance. The tilt surfaces cover the full range of inclinations for sessile or pendant drops, including the intermediate case of droplets on a wall (vertical surface). The identities are put under test both by the available solutions of a linear response approximation at small Bond numbers as well as the ones obtained from numerical solutions, making use of the Surface Evolver software. The subtleties to obtain certain angle-averages appearing in identities by the numerical solutions are discussed in detail. It is argued how the identities are useful in two respects. First is to replace some unknown values in the Young-Laplace equation by their expressions obtained from the identities. Second is to use the identities to estimate the error for approximate analytical or numerical solutions without any reference to an exact solution.

Evaporation of alcohol droplets on surfaces in moist air.

Project description:Droplets of alcohol-based formulations are common in applications from sanitizing sprays to printing inks. However, our understanding of the drying dynamics of these droplets on surfaces and the influence of ambient humidity is still very limited. Here, we report the drying dynamics of picoliter droplets of isopropyl alcohol deposited on a surface under controlled humidity. Condensation of water vapor in the ambient environment onto alcohol droplets leads to unexpectedly complex drying behavior. As relative humidity (RH) increases, we observed a variety of phenomena including enhanced spreading, nonmonotonic changes in the drying time, the formation of pancake-like shapes that suppress the coffee-ring effect, and the formation of water-rich films around an alcohol-rich drop. We developed a lubrication model that accounts for the coupling between the flow field within the drop, the shape of the drop, and the vapor concentration field. The model reproduces many of the experimentally observed morphological and dynamic features, revealing the presence of unusually large spatial compositional gradients within the evaporating droplet and surface-tension-gradient-driven flows arising from water condensation/evaporation at the surface of the droplet. One unexpected feature from the simulation is that water can evaporate and condense concurrently in different parts of the drop, providing fundamental insights that simpler models based on average fluxes lack. We further observed rim instabilities at higher RH that are well-described by a model based on the Rayleigh-Plateau instability. Our findings have implications for the testing and use of alcohol-based disinfectant sprays and printing inks.
