Self-assembled monolayer of designed and synthesized triazinedithiolsilane molecule as interfacial adhesion enhancer for integrated circuit.

ABSTRACT: Self-assembled monolayer (SAM) with tunable surface chemistry and smooth surface provides an approach to adhesion improvement and suppressing deleterious chemical interactions. Here, we demonstrate the SAM comprising of designed and synthesized 6-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)amino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithiol molecule, which can enhance interfacial adhesion to inhibit copper diffusion used in device metallization. The formation of the triazinedithiolsilane SAM is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adhesion strength between SAM-coated substrate and electroless deposition copper film was up to 13.8 MPa. The design strategy of triazinedithiolsilane molecule is expected to open up the possibilities for replacing traditional organosilane to be applied in microelectronic industry.

Aqueous interfacial gels assembled from small molecule supramolecular polymers.

Project description:The self-assembly of a stimuli-responsive aqueous supramolecular hyperbranched polymer from small molecules is reported. This system is composed of ditopic and tritopic guest-functionalised molecules that are able to form heteroternary supramolecular complexes with the macrocyclic host cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). We demonstrate that the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer formed is responsive to both photo- and chemical stimuli, exhibiting reversibility. Furthermore, this system is shown to assemble at liquid-liquid interfaces, which upon gelation, is observable on the micrometre scale. This self-healing supramolecular network can act as a soft matter barrier for aqueous microdroplets, inhibiting their coalescence.

Lateral Electronic Junction of a Single Ultrathin Silicon Induced by Interfacial Dipole of Self-Assembled Monolayer.

Project description:Interface engineering is pivotal for enhancing the performance and stability of devices with layered structures, including solar cells, electronic devices, and electrochemical systems. Incorporating the interfacial dipole between the bulk layers effectively modulates the energy level difference at the interface and does not significantly influence adjacent layers overall. However, interfaces can drastically affect adjoining layers in ultrathin devices, which are essential for next-generation electronics with high integrity, excellent performance, and low power consumption. In particular, the interfacial effect is pronounced in ultrathin semiconductors, which have a weak electric field screening effect. Herein, the substantial interfacial impact on the ultrathin silicon is shown, the p- to n-type inversion of the semiconductor solely through the deposition of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) without external bias. The effects of SAMs with different interfacial dipoles are investigated by using Hall measurement and surface analytic techniques, such as UPS, XPS, and KPFM. Furthermore, the lateral electronic junction of the ultrathin silicon is engineered by the regioselective deposition of SAMs with opposite dipoles, and the device exhibits rectification behavior. When the interfacial dipole of SAM is manipulated, the rectification ratio changes sensitively, and thus the fabricated diode shows potential to be developed as a sensing platform.

Designed wrinkles for optical encryption and flexible integrated circuit carrier board.

Project description:Patterns on polymers usually have different mechanical properties as those of the substrates, causing deformation or distortion and even detachment of the patterns from the polymer substrates. Herein, we present a wrinkling strategy, which utilizes photolithography to define the area of stress distribution by light-induced physical crosslinking of polymers and controls diffusion of residual solvent to redistribute the stress and then offers the same material for patterns as substrate by thermal polymerization, providing uniform wrinkles without worrying about force relaxation. The strategy allows the recording and hiding of up to eight switchable images in one place that can be read by the naked eye without crosstalk, applying the wrinkled polymer for optical anti-counterfeiting. The wrinkled polyimide film was also utilized to act as a substrate for the creation of fine copper circuit by a full-additive process. It generates flexible integrated circuit (IC) carrier board with copper wire density of 400% higher than that of the state-of-the-art in industry while fulfilling the standards for industrialization.

Air/water interfacial assembled rubbery semiconducting nanofilm for fully rubbery integrated electronics.

Project description:A rubber-like stretchable semiconductor with high carrier mobility is the most important yet challenging material for constructing rubbery electronics and circuits with mechanical softness and stretchability at both microscopic (material) and macroscopic (structural) levels for many emerging applications. However, the development of such a rubbery semiconductor is still nascent. Here, we report the scalable manufacturing of high-performance stretchable semiconducting nanofilms and the development of fully rubbery transistors, integrated electronics, and functional devices. The rubbery semiconductor is assembled into a freestanding binary-phased composite nanofilm based on the air/water interfacial assembly method. Fully rubbery transistors and integrated electronics, including logic gates and an active matrix, were developed, and their electrical performances were retained even when stretched by 50%. An elastic smart skin for multiplexed spatiotemporal mapping of physical pressing and a medical robotic hand equipped with rubbery multifunctional electronic skin was developed to show the applications of fully rubbery-integrated functional devices.

Nanoscale patterning of a self-assembled monolayer by modification of the molecule-substrate bond.

Project description:The intercalation of Cu at the interface of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) and a Au(111)/mica substrate by underpotential deposition (UPD) is studied as a means of high resolution patterning. A SAM of 2-(4'-methylbiphenyl-4-yl)ethanethiol (BP2) prepared in a structural phase that renders the Au substrate completely passive against Cu-UPD, is patterned by modification with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. The tip-induced defects act as nucleation sites for Cu-UPD. The lateral diffusion of the metal at the SAM-substrate interface and, thus, the pattern dimensions are controlled by the deposition time. Patterning down to the sub-20 nm range is demonstrated. The difference in strength between the S-Au and S-Cu bond is harnessed to develop the latent Cu-UPD image into a patterned binary SAM. Demonstrated by the exchange of BP2 by adamantanethiol (AdSH) this is accomplished by a sequence of reductive desorption of BP2 in Cu free areas followed by adsorption of AdSH. The appearance of Au adatom islands upon the thiol exchange suggests that the interfacial structures of BP2 and AdSH SAMs are different.

Electrochemistry Study of Permselectivity and Interfacial Electron Transfers of a Branch-Tailed Fluorosurfactant Self-Assembled Monolayer on Gold.

Project description:We investigated the permselectivity and interfacial electron transfers of an amphiphilic branch-tailed fluorosurfactant self-assembled monolayer (FS-SAM) on a gold electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The FS-SAM was prepared by a self-assembly technique and a "click" reaction. The barrier property and interfacial electron transfers of the FS-SAM were also evaluated using various probes with different features. The FS-SAM allowed a higher degree of permeation by small hydrophilic (Cl- and F-) electrolyte ions than large hydrophobic (ClO₄- and PF₆-) ones. Meanwhile, the redox reaction of the Fe(CN)₆3- couple was nearly completely blocked by the FS-SAM, whereas the electron transfer of Ru(NH₃)₆3+ was easier than that of Fe(CN)₆3-, which may be due to the underlying tunneling mechanism. For hydrophobic dopamine, the hydrophobic bonding between the FS-SAM exterior fluoroalkyl moieties and the hydrophobic probes, as well as the hydration resistance from the interior hydration shell around the oligo (ethylene glycol) moieties, hindered the transport of hydrophobic probes into the FS-SAM. These results may have profound implications for understanding the permselectivity and electron transfers of amphiphilic surfaces consisting of molecules containing aromatic groups and branch-tailed fluorosurfactants in their structures.

Proteomic analysis of monolayer-integrated proteins on lipid droplets identifies amphipathic interfacial α-helical membrane anchors.

Project description:Despite not spanning phospholipid bilayers, monotopic integral proteins (MIPs) play critical roles in organizing biochemical reactions on membrane surfaces. Defining the structural basis by which these proteins are anchored to membranes has been hampered by the paucity of unambiguously identified MIPs and a lack of computational tools that accurately distinguish monolayer-integrating motifs from bilayer-spanning transmembrane domains (TMDs). We used quantitative proteomics and statistical modeling to identify 87 high-confidence candidate MIPs in lipid droplets, including 21 proteins with predicted TMDs that cannot be accommodated in these monolayer-enveloped organelles. Systematic cysteine-scanning mutagenesis showed the predicted TMD of one candidate MIP, DHRS3, to be a partially buried amphipathic α-helix in both lipid droplet monolayers and the cytoplasmic leaflet of endoplasmic reticulum membrane bilayers. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations support these observations, suggesting that this helix is most stable at the solvent-membrane interface. The simulations also predicted similar interfacial amphipathic helices when applied to seven additional MIPs from our dataset. Our findings suggest that interfacial helices may be a common motif by which MIPs are integrated into membranes, and provide high-throughput methods to identify and study MIPs.

CNT-rGO Hydrogel-Integrated Fabric Composite Synthesized via an Interfacial Gelation Process for Wearable Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Project description:We demonstrate a flexible and stretchable supercapacitor assembled via straightforward interfacial gelation of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) with carbon nanotube (CNT) on a stretchable fabric surface. The difference between the redox potential of aqueous graphene oxide (GO) dispersion, prepared using a modified Hummers' method, and of a solid Zn plate, which was used as an external stimulus, induces a spontaneous reduction of GO flakes forming porous CNT-rGO hydrogel at the liquid-solid interface. With the aid of Zn, a macroporous and flexible CNT-rGO hydrogel was fabricated on a stretchable fabric platform using a facile fabrication method, and the CNT-rGO fabric composite was assembled into a supercapacitor to demonstrate its feasibility as a wearable electrode. The porous structure of the as-formed CNT-rGO fabric composite allows excellent electrolyte accessibility and ion transport that result in a fast charge/discharge rate up to 100 mV/s and a large areal capacity of 10.13 mF/cm2 at a discharge rate of 0.5 mA (0.1 mA/cm2). The inclusion of one-dimensional CNT as conductive bridges allows an excellent capacity retention of 95.2% after complete folding of the electrode and a capacity retention of 93.3% after 1000 bending cycles. Additional stretching test displayed a high capacity retention of 90.0% even at an applied strain as high as 50%, overcoming previous limitations of brittle graphene-based electrodes. This low-cost, lightweight, easy to synthesize, stretchable supercapacitor holds promise for next-generation wearable electronics and energy storage applications.

Interfacial Properties of Anisotropic Monolayer SiAs Transistors.

Project description:The newly prepared monolayer (ML) SiAs is expected to be a candidate channel material for next-generation nano-electronic devices in virtue of its proper bandgap, high carrier mobility, and anisotropic properties. The interfacial properties in ML SiAs field-effect transistors are comprehensively studied with electrodes (graphene, V2CO2, Au, Ag, and Cu) by using ab initio electronic structure calculations and quantum transport simulation. It is found that ML SiAs forms a weak van der Waals interaction with graphene and V2CO2, while it forms a strong interaction with bulk metals (Au, Ag, and Cu). Although ML SiAs has strong anisotropy, it is not reflected in the contact property. Based on the quantum transport simulation, ML SiAs forms n-type lateral Schottky contact with Au, Ag, and Cu electrodes with the Schottky barrier height (SBH) of 0.28 (0.27), 0.40 (0.47), and 0.45 (0.33) eV along the a (b) direction, respectively, while it forms p-type lateral Schottky contact with a graphene electrode with a SBH of 0.34 (0.28) eV. Fortunately, ML SiAs forms an ideal Ohmic contact with the V2CO2 electrode. This study not only gives a deep understanding of the interfacial properties of ML SiAs with electrodes but also provides a guide for the design of ML SiAs devices.

Monolayer surface chemistry enables 2-colour single molecule localisation microscopy of adhesive ligands and adhesion proteins.

Project description:Nanofabricated and nanopatterned surfaces have revealed the sensitivity of cell adhesion to nanoscale variations in the spacing of adhesive ligands such as the tripeptide arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD). To date, surface characterisation and cell adhesion are often examined in two separate experiments so that the localisation of ligands and adhesion proteins cannot be combined in the same image. Here we developed self-assembled monolayer chemistry for indium tin oxide (ITO) surfaces for single molecule localisation microscopy (SMLM). Cell adhesion and spreading were sensitive to average RGD spacing. At low average RGD spacing, a threshold exists of 0.8 RGD peptides per µm2 that tether cells to the substratum but this does not enable formation of focal adhesions. These findings suggest that cells can sense and engage single adhesive ligands but ligand clustering is required for cell spreading. Thus, our data reveal subtle differences in adhesion biology that may be obscured in ensemble measurements.
