Methyl 3-O-?-l-fucopyranosyl ?-d-gal-acto-pyran-oside: a synchrotron study.

ABSTRACT: The title compound, C(13)H(24)O(10) is the methyl glycoside of a structural element ?-l-Fucp-(1? 3)-?-d-Galp making up two thirds of the repeating unit in the capsular polysaccharide of Klebsiella K63. The conformation of the title compound is described by the glycosidic torsion angles ?(H) = 55?(1)° and ?(H) = -24?(1)°. The hy-droxy-methyl group in the galactose residue is present in the gauche-trans conformation. In the crystal, O-H?O hydrogen bonds connect the disaccharide units into chains along the a-axis direction and further hydrogen bonds cross-link the chains.

Project description:The title compound, C13H24O9·H2O, a structural model for part of bacterial O-anti-gen polysaccharides from Shigella flexneri and Escherichia coli, crystallizes with four independent disaccharide mol-ecules and four water mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit. The conformation at the glycosidic linkage joining the two rhamnosyl residues is described by the torsion angles φH of 39, 30, 37 and 37°, and ψH of -32, -35, -31 and -32°, which are the major conformation region known to be populated in an aqueous solution. The hexo-pyran-ose rings have the 1 C 4 chair conformation. In the crystal, the disaccharide and water mol-ecules are associated through O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a layer parallel to the bc plane. The layers stack along the a axis via hydro-phobic inter-actions between the methyl groups.

The occupancy of the major conformers of the two mol-ecules refined to 0.858 (5) and 0.523 (5).

Project description:The synthesis and crystal structure of the title compound, C14H19NO8·H2O, prepared in three steps from 6-O-ethyl-1,2;3,4-di-O-iso-propyl-idene-α-d-galacto-pyran-ose using protecting-group strategies employed in carbohydrate chemistry, is reported. The asymmetric unit consists of a single galactoside mol-ecule, in which the pyran-oid ring has a 4C1 conformation and the 4-nitro-phenyl moiety is essentially planar. Project description:In the title compound, C(10)H(18)O(5)·H(2)O, the fucopyran-oside ring adopts a chair conformation. The crystal packing is stabilized by inter-molecular O-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds together with intra-molecular O⋯O [2.2936 (8) Å] and inter-molecular O⋯O [2.7140 (8)-2.829 (3) Å] short contacts. The mol-ecules are linked together to form an infinite chain along the a axis. This structure has been solved previously but with no R-values [Spiers (1931). Z. Kristallogr. Kristallgeom. Project description:The title compound, C(13)H(24)O(11)·4H(2)O, forms extended hydrogen-bonded networks. These are present between disaccharides, but not as inter-residue hydrogen bonds, as well as to water mol-ecules that in addition form an inter-molecular chain of hydrogen bonds. The conformation of the disaccharide is described by the glycosidic torsion angles ϕ(H) = -34° and ψ(H) = -5°. Macroscopically, the disaccharide was observed to be hygroscopic.
