Description of a new species of Sternocoelis from Morocco with proposal of the Sternocoelis marseulii species group (Coleoptera, Histeridae).

ABSTRACT: TheSternocoelis marseulii species group is proposed based on antennal and prosternal characters. Five species are included in the group:Sternocoelis marseulii (Brisout de Barneville, 1866)(Spain), Sternocoelis viaticus Lewis, 1892 (Algeria), Sternocoelis vaucheri Lewis, 1896 (Morocco), Sternocoelis berberus Lackner & Yélamos, 2001 (Morocco)and Sternocoelis yelamosisp. n. (Morocco). The external morphology of Sternocoelis yelamosisp. n. is described and illustrated, the illustrations of genitalia of all species of the group (except for Sternocoelis vaucheri) are provided and a key to the species of the group is given.

A revision of the <i>Phelisterhaemorrhous</i> species group (Coleoptera, Histeridae, Exosternini).

Project description:The Phelisterhaemorrhous species group is established here, revising the seventeen included species, four of which are described as new. This group is named for and contains the type species of Phelister, so represents a core around which a modern concept of the dumping-ground genus Phelister may be developed. The group includes several common and well-known species in the Americas, including some of the only Phelister to exhibit distinctive coloration. Several of these are typically found in cattle dung, and have likely expanded beyond their native ranges as cattle spread throughout the Americas. The group contains the following species: Phelisterhaemorrhous Marseul, 1854, Phelisteraffinis J.E. LeConte, 1859, Phelisterparallelisternus Schmidt, 1893, Phelistermobilensis Casey, 1916, Phelisterbrevistriatus Casey, 1916, Phelistersonorae sp. nov., Phelisterwarneri sp. nov., Phelisterpuncticollis Hinton, 1935, Phelistersubrotundus (Say, 1825), Phelisterrouzeti (Fairmaire, 1850), Phelisterrufinotus Marseul, 1861, Phelisterthiemei Schmidt, 1889, Phelisterparecis sp. nov., Phelisterbryanti sp. nov., Phelistervernus (Say, 1825), Phelisterchilicola Marseul, 1870, and Phelisterbruchi Bickhardt, 1920. We also designate the following new synonymies: Phelisterhaemorrhous Marseul (= Phelisterrubicundus Marseul, 1889, syn. nov.); Phelistersubrotundus (= Phelistercontractus Casey, 1916, syn nov.); Phelisterrouzeti (Fairmaire) (= Phelisterfairmairei Marseul, 1861; syn. nov., = Phelisterwickhami Casey, 1916, syn. nov.); Phelisterrufinotus Marseul, 1861 (= Epierusmarseulii Kirsch, 1873, syn. nov.); and Phelisterthiemei Schmidt, 1889 (= Phelisterstercoricola Bickhardt, 1909, syn. nov.).

New Coleoptera records from New Brunswick, Canada: Histeridae.

Project description:Eighteen species of Histeridae are newly reported from New Brunswick, Canada. This brings the total number of species known from New Brunswick to 42. Seven of these species, Acritus exguus (Erichson), Euspilotus rossi (Wenzel), Hypocaccus fitchi (Marseul), Dendrophilus kiteleyi Bousquet and Laplante, Platysoma cylindricum (Paykull), Atholus sedecimstriatus (Say), and Margarinotus harrisii (Kirby) are recorded from the Maritime provinces for the first time. Collection and bionomic data are presented for these species.

Malagasyprinus, a new genus of the Saprininae from Madagascar with description of two new species (Coleoptera, Histeridae, Saprininae) (First contribution to the knowledge of the Histeridae of Madagascar).

Project description:Based on the results of recent phylogenetic analysis of the higher taxa of the Saprininae as well as external morphological characters, especially the presence of deep and large prosternal foveae, and the shape and position of the sensory organs of the antennal club, the species Saprinus (s.str.) caeruleatus Lewis, 1905 is excluded from the genus Saprinus and a new genus Malagasyprinus, exclusive to Madagascar, is established for it. The new genus shows mainly characters that are apomorphic for the subfamily and contains another two, highly similar allopatric species Malagasyprinus perrieri sp. n., and Malagasyprinus diana sp. n., described herein. The three species are best separated from each other by the structure of the prosternum and male terminalia, especially the shape of the aedeagus. We re-describe Malagasyprinus caeruleatus comb. n. and provide Malagasyprinus perrieri and Malagasyprinus diana with brief differential diagnoses. All taxon descriptions are accompanied with color habitat photographs, SEM micrographs and drawings of their male genitalia. A key to the species of Malagasyprinus is given. Sensory structures of the antenna of Malagasyprinus caeruleatus comb. n. are likewise depicted herein. The systematic position of the newly erected genus is discussed. A lectotype of Saprinus caeruleatus Lewis, 1905 is designated.

Project description:A new species of the genus Eremosaprinus Ross, 1939, E. warneri, is described from southeastern Arizona, USA, and incorporated into the identification key for the genus. Description of the new species is supplemented with SEM micrographs and drawings of sensory structures of the antenna and male genitalia. New distribution data on four species, E. distinctus Lundgren, 1992, E. hubbardi (Wenzel, 1939), E. minimus Tishechkin & Lackner, 2012, and E. unguiculatus (Ross, 1939), are also provided.

Five new species of Triotemnus (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) from Morocco and Yemen.

Project description:Fivenew species of the genus Triotemnus from Morocco and Yemen are described. Triotemnus is a new genus of Scolytinae for the Yemen region. External morphology of the new species and all morphologically related species of the genus were studied. While the new species from Morocco are morphologically similar to the known species from the corresponding region, all three newly described species from Yemen, mainly two of them living in Socotra, are morphologically very different from all other known species of the genus. Geographical distribution and the probability of endemicity are discussed.

Project description:Twenty three new species of Exocelina Broun, 1886 from New Guinea are described herein: Exocelinabewaniensis sp. n., Exocelinabismarckensis sp. n., Exocelinacraterensis sp. n., Exocelinagorokaensis sp. n., Exocelinaherowana sp. n., Exocelinajimiensis sp. n., Exocelinakisli sp. n., Exocelinaksionseki sp. n., Exocelinalembena sp. n., Exocelinamantembu sp. n., Exocelinamichaelensis sp. n., Exocelinapinocchio sp. n., Exocelinapseudoastrophallus sp. n., Exocelinapseudobifida sp. n., Exocelinapseudoedeltraudae sp. n., Exocelinapseudoeme sp. n., Exocelinasandaunensis sp. n., Exocelinasimbaiarea sp. n., Exocelinaskalei sp. n., Exocelinatabubilensis sp. n., Exocelinatariensis sp. n., Exocelinavovai sp. n., and Exocelinawannangensis sp. n. All of them have been found to belong to the Exocelinaekari-group. An identification key to all known species of the group is provided, and important diagnostic characters (habitus, color, male antennae, protarsomeres 4-5, median lobes, and parameres) are illustrated. Data on the distribution of the new species and some already described species are given.

Faunistic notes on Cryptophagidae and Latridiidae of Talassemtane National Park, Western Rif, Morocco, with the description of a new species (Coleoptera, Cucujoidea).

Project description:In order to contribute to the knowledge of beetles (Coleoptera) of the mountainous region of Morocco, Talassemtane National Park (Western Rif, Chefchaouen district, Morocco) was surveyed. This is an exceptional protected area of the Mediterranean Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve (RIBM). The checklist was made using different traps combined with active periodical searches during 2013-2015. A total of 153 beetles belonging to 19 species from four subfamilies (Cryptophagidae: Cryptophaginae and Atomariinae; Latridiidae: Latridiinae and Corticariinae) was collected. Dienerella (Cartoderema) talassemata, a new species (Coleoptera: Latridiidae) was compared to other morphologically related species. One species is recorded for the first time for North Africa; three species are new records for Morocco. In addition, amongst the species listed, three are endemic to Morocco: Dienerella talassemtanasp. n., Caenoscelis humifera and Dienerella besucheti.

Taxonomic revision of the Afrotropical <i>Agabus raffrayi</i> species group with the description of four new species (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae).

Project description:We revise the Afrotropical Agabus raffrayi species group, motivated by the discovery of new diversity in Kenya and South Africa. Whilst Agabus is mainly a holarctic genus, the Agabus raffrayi group is restricted to high altitude regions of eastern Africa and temperate parts of South Africa, from where we describe the southernmost Agabus in the world. The following new species are introduced: Agabus anguluverpus sp. nov. from Mount Kenya in central Kenya, Agabus austellus sp. nov. a widespread species in South Africa, Agabus riberae sp. nov. from the Kamiesberg and northeastern Cederberg ranges in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa and Agabus agulhas sp. nov. from the Agulhas Plain, Western Cape Province, South Africa. We provide a distribution map, a determination key for males, quantitative measurements of diagnostic characters, habitus photos and detailed photos of male genitalia for all described species in the group, as well as images of diagnostic characters and habitats. The presence or absence of an elongated section between the subapical broadening and the base of the apical and subapical teeth of the male aedeagus is a useful novel character, first revealed by our study. In contrast with the most recent revision of Afrotropical Agabus, we show that Agabus ruwenzoricus Guignot, 1936 is restricted to eastern Africa; South African records of this species having been based on misidentifications, no species of the group being common to southern and eastern Africa. We speculate that the raffrayi group may display phylogenetic niche conservatism, being restricted, as an originally temperate taxon, to higher elevations in tropical eastern Africa, but occurring at lower altitudes in temperate South Africa.
