Two new species and one newly recorded species of Elaphropeza Macquart from Taiwan (Diptera, Empididae, Tachydromiinae).

ABSTRACT: Previously 11 Elaphropeza species were known from Taiwan. The following two species of the genus Elaphropeza are described: Elaphropeza flaviscutumsp. n. and Elaphropeza trimaculasp. n. One species, Elaphropeza plumata Yang, Merz & Grootaert, is newly recorded from Taiwan. A key to 14 known species of Elaphropeza from Taiwan is presented.

Eumetriochroa hiranoi Kumata, 1998, is newly recorded from China. Photographs of adults and figures of the genital structures are provided, along with keys to the Chinese species of Metriochroa, Eumetriochroa, and Gibbovalva.

Two rare ophiocordycipitaceous fungi newly recorded in Taiwan.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Ophiocordycipitaceae is a highly diverse fungal family parasitizing a wide range of arthropods and hypogeous fungi. We collected two ophiocordycipitaceous species previously unknown in Taiwan: one emerged from hypogeous fruiting bodies of an Elaphomyces fungus and the other was associated with dragonflies. RESULTS:Based on gross morphology, microscopic features, ITS sequences, and hosts, the two ophiocordycipitaceous fungi were identified as Tolypocladium japonicum and Ophiocordyceps odonatae. We isolated axenic cultures of these two fungi, and their anamorphs were obtained. The simplicillium-like anamorph of T. japonicum is described herein for the first time. The anamorph of O. odonatae produce conidia holoblastically in sympodial sequence and is assignable to Hymenostilbe. A dichotomous key to the species of Ophiocordycipitaceae reported in Taiwan is provided. CONCLUSION:A thorough literature study indicates that the two fungi reported herein have rarely been collected. Our identifications of T. japonicum and O. odonatae agree well with descriptions in the literature and are highly supported by DNA sequence analysis.

Project description:Two new species of the genus Uloma Dejean, 1821, Uloma fengyangensis sp. n. and Uloma acrodonta sp. n., are described and figured from Zhejiang Province of China. Uloma bonzica Marseul, 1876 is recorded from China for the first time. A key to the known Uloma species from Zhejiang of China and a list of Uloma species from China are provided.

One new species of the subgenus Hexatoma (Eriocera) Macquart (Diptera, Limoniidae) from China with a key to Chinese species.

Project description:One new species of the subgenus Eriocera Macquart, 1838, Hexatoma (Eriocera) cleopatroides Men, sp. n. (Southern China: Anhui) is described and illustrated. A key to all of 78 known species from China in the subgenus is provided, which was solely based on literatures. The new species is similar to Hexatoma (Eriocera) cleopatra Alexander, 1933, but distinguishes from the latter by the prescutum entirely black with two ill-defined gray stripes, by the legs with fore and middle femora brown in basal half, black in apical half, with hind femora brown in basal one-fourth, and by the wings with cells c and sc more yellowish brown than the ground color.

Two new and one newly recorded species of Thelcticopis Karsch, 1884 (Araneae, Sparassidae) from China.

Project description:Two new species of the genus Thelcticopis Karsch, 1884, T. dahanensis Zhu & Zhong, sp. nov. (♂) and T. unciformis Zhu & Zhong, sp. nov. (♂), are described and figured from Taiwan Island. Thelcticopis severa (L. Koch, 1875) is recorded from Guangdong and Fujian provinces for the first time. So far, Thelcticopis, including four species from China, is mainly distributed in the tropical or subtropical areas of China (Hainan, Taiwan, Yunnan, Guangdong, Fujian).

Molecular Phylogeny Revealing the Single Origin of Cinnamomum-associated Bruggmanniella (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) in Asia, with Descriptions of Three New and One Newly Recorded Species from Taiwan.

Project description:Cecidomyiid genus Bruggmanniella contains four Lauraceae-associated species in Asia and 13 species associated with various plant families in Latin American. In this article, three new species, B. sanlianensis sp. nov., B. turoguei sp. nov. and B. shianguei sp. nov., and one newly recorded species, B. cinnamomi, are reported on Cinnamomum plant species (Lauraceae) from Taiwan. Molecular phylogenetic analysis was conducted for the four Cinnamomum-associated Bruggmanniella, together with B. brevipes Lin, Yang and Tokuda, B. actinodaphnes Tokuda and Yukawa, three Pseudasphondylia and two Daphnephila species. The Asian Bruggmanniella and the Cinnamomum-associated Bruggmanniella were monophyletic on the Neighbor-joining, Maximum-likelihood, and Bayesian inference trees. In addition, Cinnamomum-associated Bruggmanniella species had the closest sistership with B. brevipes, which are associated with the plant genus Neolitsea (Lauraceae). These results suggest that B. brevipes, B. actinodaphnes and B. cinnamomi are members of genus Bruggmanniella, a finding that is not consistent with another recent morphology-based phylogenetic study. Among the Cinnamomum-associated lineages, the leaf galler B. sanlianensis sp. nov. is a sister to the clade of stem gallers, suggesting that host organ shift from leaf to stem occurred prior to host shift. Additionally, the paraphyly of the Taiwanese stem galler with respect to Japanese B. cinnamomi suggests that the distributional range of B. cinnamomi be expanded from Taiwan to Japan.

One new species and one newly recorded species of the genus Lasiochira Meyrick, 1931 (Lepidoptera, Oecophoridae) from China.

Project description:Lasiochira wuzhishanensis Yin, sp. nov. is described herein from the island province of Hainan, China. It is diagnosed from a similar species, Lasiochira jianfengensis Yin, Wang & Park, 2014. Both species are sympatric in Hainan province, but the latter is also known in northern Vietnam. Lasiochira pallidiptera Yin, Wang & Park, 2014 is recorded for the first time from China. Color images of the adults and genitalia of the above three species are provided. In addition, a checklist and a geographical distribution map of all species of Lasiochira Meyrick are included.
