Utilization of the hydroxyalkylation reaction to prepare bis(benzocrown ethers).

ABSTRACT: The hydroxyalkylation reaction has been used to condense benzocrown ethers with various aldehydes and ketones. The condensation reactions are catalyzed by triflic or sulfuric acid. The products from the reactions are bis(benzocrown ethers) and they are formed in good yields (42-98%, 13 examples).

Synthesis of Ethers via Reaction of Carbanions and Monoperoxyacetals.

Project description:Although transfer of electrophilic alkoxyl ("RO+") from organic peroxides to organometallics offers a complement to traditional methods for etherification, application has been limited by constraints associated with peroxide reactivity and stability. We now demonstrate that readily prepared tetrahydropyranyl monoperoxyacetals react with sp(3) and sp(2) organolithium and organomagnesium reagents to furnish moderate to high yields of ethers. The method is successfully applied to the synthesis of alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, heteroaryl, and cyclopropyl ethers, mixed O,O-acetals, and S,S,O-orthoesters. In contrast to reactions of dialkyl and alkyl/silyl peroxides, the displacements of monoperoxyacetals provide no evidence for alkoxy radical intermediates. At the same time, the high yields observed for transfer of primary, secondary, or tertiary alkoxides, the latter involving attack on neopentyl oxygen, are inconsistent with an SN2 mechanism. Theoretical studies suggest a mechanism involving Lewis acid promoted insertion of organometallics into the O-O bond.

Reaction discovery using microfluidic-based multidimensional screening of polycyclic iminium ethers.

Project description:Polycyclic iminium ethers are ambident electrophilic intermediates that react with a range of nucleophiles in a highly condition-dependent manner to afford densely functionalized lactams. In an effort to expand the scope of reactivity and assist in the generation of new chemotypes from these intermediates, several iminium ethers were subjected to reaction screening using an automated microfluidics reaction platform. Application of this approach led to the discovery of several interesting reaction pathways involving the iminium ether intermediates that will be described.

Controlling Reaction Routes in Noble-Metal-Catalyzed Conversion of Aryl Ethers.

Project description:Hydrogenolysis and hydrolysis of aryl ethers in the liquid phase are important reactions for accessing functionalized cyclic compounds from renewable feedstocks. On supported noble metals, hydrogenolysis is initiated by a hydrogen addition to the aromatic ring followed by C-O bond cleavage. In water, hydrolysis and hydrogenolysis proceed by partial hydrogenation of the aromatic ring prior to water or hydrogen insertion. The mechanisms are common for the studied metals, but the selectivity to hydrogenolysis increases in the order Pd<Rh<Ir<Ru≈Pt in decalin and water; the inverse was observed for the selectivity to hydrolysis in water. Hydrogenolysis selectivity correlates with the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption. Hydrogenolysis has the highest standard free energy of activation and a weak dependence on H2 pressure, thus, the selectivity to hydrogenolysis is maximized by increasing temperature and decreasing H2 pressure. Selectivity to C-O bond cleavage reaches >95 % in water and alkaline conditions.

A full utilization of rice husk to evaluate phytochemical bioactivities and prepare cellulose nanocrystals.

Project description:Rice husks (RHs) as an agro-waste generated from rice production, while its application is limited. This study was designed to introduce a full utilization of rice husks, which extracted the phytochemical at first and then produced cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as the use of the residue. Furthermore, the phytochemicals extracted from rice husk was identified and its biological activity, including antioxidant activity, cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) and antiproliferative activity, had been detected as well. Results showed the bound fraction of rice husk had higher antioxidant than common fruit and grain. Free fraction of rice husk deserved to have further analysis in antiproliferative activity due to its low cytotoxicity. The CNCs produced by residue was using delignification process and acid hydrolysis treatments. The chemical composition of the residue obtained after phytochemical extraction was determined. CNCs morphological investigation was performed using an optical microscope and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our strategy is to achieve a comprehensive utilization of rice husks with both economy and environment benefits.

Galvanic Replacement Reaction as a Route to Prepare Nanoporous Aluminum for UV Plasmonics.

Project description:There is a growing interest in extending plasmonics applications into the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Noble metals are commonly used in plasmonic, but their intrinsic optical properties limit their use above 350 nm. Aluminum is probably the most suitable material for UV plasmonics, and in this work we fabricated substrates of nanoporous aluminum starting from an alloy of Al2Mg3. The porous metal is obtained by means of a galvanic replacement reaction. Such nanoporous metal can be exploited to achieve a plasmonic material suitable for enhanced UV Raman spectroscopy and fluorescence. Thanks to the large surface to volume ratio, this material represents a powerful platform for promoting interaction between plasmonic substrates and molecules in the UV.

Iridium Catalyzed Hydro-hydroxyalkylation of Butadiene: Carbonyl Crotylation.

Project description:Exposure of alcohols 1a-1i to butadiene in the presence of a cyclometallated iridium catalyzed derived from allyl acetate, 4-methoxy-3-nitrobenzoic acid and BIPHEP (2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)biphenyl) results in hydrogen transfer to generate aldehyde-allyliridium pairs, which engage in C-C coupling to form products of carbonyl crotylation. Under related conditions using 1,4-butanediol as hydrogen donor, butadiene reductively couples to aldehydes 2e-2g and 2i to furnish carbonyl crotylation products 3e-3g and 3i. Thus, butadiene mediated carbonyl crotylation occurs with equal facility from the alcohol or aldehyde oxidation level with complete levels of branched regioselectivity.

Photochemical C-H Hydroxyalkylation of Quinolines and Isoquinolines.

Project description:We report herein a visible light-mediated C-H hydroxyalkylation of quinolines and isoquinolines that proceeds via a radical path. The process exploits the excited-state reactivity of 4-acyl-1,4-dihydropyridines, which can readily generate acyl radicals upon blue light absorption. By avoiding the need for external oxidants, this radical-generating strategy enables a departure from the classical, oxidative Minisci-type pattern and unlocks a unique reactivity, leading to hydroxyalkylated heteroarenes. Mechanistic investigations provide evidence that a radical-mediated spin-center shift is the key step of the process. The method's mild reaction conditions and high functional group tolerance accounted for the late-stage functionalization of active pharmaceutical ingredients and natural products.

Urea-Derivative Catalyzed Enantioselective Hydroxyalkylation of Hydroxyindoles with Isatins.

Project description:The enantioselective transformations of indoles preferentially take place in the more-reactive azole ring. However, the methods for the enantioselective functionalization of the indole benzene ring are scarce. In this paper, a series of bifunctional (thio)urea derivatives were used to organocatalyze the enantioselective Friedel-Crafts hydroxyalkylation of indoles with isatins. The resulting products were obtained in good yields (65-90%) with up to 94% enantiomer excess (ee). The catalyst type and the substrate scope were broadened in this methodology.
