Perfect anti-reflection from first principles.

ABSTRACT: Reducing unwanted reflections through impedance matching, called anti-reflection, has long been an important challenge in optics and electrical engineering. Beyond trial and error optimization, however, a systematic way to realize anti-reflection is still absent. Here, we report the discovery of an analytic solution to this long standing problem. For electromagnetic waves, we find the graded permittivity and permeability that completely remove any given impedance mismatch. We demonstrate that perfect broadband anti-reflection is possible when a dispersive, graded refractive index medium is used for the impedance-matching layer. We also present a design rule for the ultra-thin anti-reflection coating which we confirm experimentally by showing the anti-reflection behavior of an exemplary ?/25-thick coating made of metamaterials. This work opens a new path to anti-reflection applications in optoelectronic device, transmission line and stealth technologies.

Non-Hermitian control between absorption and transparency in perfect zero-reflection magnonics.

Project description:Recent works in metamaterials and transformation optics have demonstrated exotic properties in a number of open systems, including perfect absorption/transmission, electromagnetically induced transparency, cloaking or invisibility, etc. Meanwhile, non-Hermitian physics framework has been developed to describe the properties of open systems, however, most works related to this focus on the eigenstate properties with less attention paid to the reflection characteristics in complex frequency plane, despite the usefulness of zero-reflection (ZR) for applications. Here we demonstrate that the indirectly coupled two-magnon system not only exhibits non-Hermitian eigenmode hybridization, but also ZR states in complex frequency plane. The observed perfect-ZR (PZR) state, i.e., ZR with pure real frequency, is manifested as infinitely narrow reflection dips (~67 dB) with infinite group delay discontinuity. This reflection singularity of PZR distinguishes from the resonant eigenstates but can be adjusted on or off resonance with the eigenstates. Accordingly, the absorption and transmission can be flexibly tuned from nearly full absorption (NFA) to nearly full transmission (NFT) regions.

From the generalized reflection law to the realization of perfect anomalous reflectors.

Project description:The use of the generalized Snell's law opens wide possibilities for the manipulation of transmitted and reflected wavefronts. However, known structures designed to shape reflection wavefronts suffer from significant parasitic reflections in undesired directions. We explore the limitations of the existing solutions for the design of passive planar reflectors and demonstrate that strongly nonlocal response is required for perfect performance. A new paradigm for the design of perfect reflectors based on energy surface channeling is introduced. We realize and experimentally verify a perfect design of an anomalously reflective surface using an array of rectangular metal patches backed by a metallic plate. This conceptually new mechanism for wavefront manipulation allows the design of thin perfect reflectors, offering a versatile design method applicable to other scenarios, such as focusing reflectors, surface wave manipulations, or metasurface holograms, extendable to other frequencies.

First-principles design of nanomachines.

Project description:Learning from nature's amazing molecular machines, globular proteins, we present a framework for the predictive design of nanomachines. We show that the crucial ingredients for a chain molecule to behave as a machine are its inherent anisotropy and the coupling between the local Frenet coordinate reference frames of nearby monomers. We demonstrate that, even in the absence of heterogeneity, protein-like behavior is obtained for a simple chain molecule made up of just 30 hard spheres. This chain spontaneously switches between 2 distinct geometries, a single helix and a dual helix, merely because of thermal fluctuations.

Protein Repeats from First Principles.

Project description:Some natural proteins display recurrent structural patterns. Despite being highly similar at the tertiary structure level, repeating patterns within a single repeat protein can be extremely variable at the sequence level. We use a mathematical definition of a repetition and investigate the occurrences of these in sequences of different protein families. We found that long stretches of perfect repetitions are infrequent in individual natural proteins, even for those which are known to fold into structures of recurrent structural motifs. We found that natural repeat proteins are indeed repetitive in their families, exhibiting abundant stretches of 6 amino acids or longer that are perfect repetitions in the reference family. We provide a systematic quantification for this repetitiveness. We show that this form of repetitiveness is not exclusive of repeat proteins, but also occurs in globular domains. A by-product of this work is a fast quantification of the likelihood of a protein to belong to a family.

Bateman gradients from first principles.

Project description:In 1948, Angus Bateman presented experiments and concepts that remain influential and debated in sexual selection. The Bateman gradient relates reproductive success to mate number, and Bateman presented this as the cause of intra-masculine selection. A deeper causal level was subsequently asserted: that the ultimate cause of sex differences in Bateman gradients is the sex difference in gamete numbers, an argument that remains controversial and without mathematical backup. Here I develop models showing how asymmetry in gamete numbers alone can generate steeper Bateman gradients in males. This conclusion remains when the further asymmetry of internal fertilisation is added to the model and fertilisation is efficient. Strong gamete limitation can push Bateman gradients towards equality under external fertilisation and reverse them under internal fertilisation. Thus, this study provides a mathematical formalisation of Bateman's brief verbal claim, while demonstrating that the link between gamete number and Bateman gradients is not inevitable nor trivial.

Extreme anti-reflection enhanced magneto-optic Kerr effect microscopy.

Project description:Magnetic and spintronic media have offered fundamental scientific subjects and technological applications. Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy provides the most accessible platform to study the dynamics of spins, magnetic quasi-particles, and domain walls. However, in the research of nanoscale spin textures and state-of-the-art spintronic devices, optical techniques are generally restricted by the extremely weak magneto-optical activity and diffraction limit. Highly sophisticated, expensive electron microscopy and scanning probe methods thus have come to the forefront. Here, we show that extreme anti-reflection (EAR) dramatically improves the performance and functionality of MOKE microscopy. For 1-nm-thin Co film, we demonstrate a Kerr amplitude as large as 20° and magnetic domain imaging visibility of 0.47. Especially, EAR-enhanced MOKE microscopy enables real-time detection and statistical analysis of sub-wavelength magnetic domain reversals. Furthermore, we exploit enhanced magneto-optic birefringence and demonstrate analyser-free MOKE microscopy. The EAR technique is promising for optical investigations and applications of nanomagnetic systems.

First-principles calculations of inorganic metallocene nanowires.

Project description:Inspired by the recently synthesized inorganic metallocene derivatives Fe(P4)22-, we have identified four stable inorganic metallocene nanowires, MP4 (M = Sc, Ti, Cr and Fe) in configurations of either regular quadrangular prism (Q-type) or anticube (A-type), and further investigated their magnetic and electronic characteristics utilizing the first-principles calculation. It shows that CrP4 is a ferromagnetic metal, while other nanowires are semiconducting antiferromagnets with bandgaps of 0.44, 1.88, and 2.29 eV within the HSE06 level. It also shows that both ScP4 and TiP4 can be stabilized in the Q-type and A-type, corresponding to the antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic ground states, respectively, indicating a configuration-dependent magnetism. The thermodynamic and lattice stabilities are confirmed by the ab initio molecular dynamics and phonon spectra. This study has unmasked the structural and physical properties of novel inorganic metallocene nanowires, and revealed their potential application in spintronics.

First-Principles Atomistic Thermodynamics and Configurational Entropy.

Project description:In most applications, functional materials operate at finite temperatures and are in contact with a reservoir of atoms or molecules (gas, liquid, or solid). In order to understand the properties of materials at realistic conditions, statistical effects associated with configurational sampling and particle exchange at finite temperatures must consequently be taken into account. In this contribution, we discuss the main concepts behind equilibrium statistical mechanics. We demonstrate how these concepts can be used to predict the behavior of materials at realistic temperatures and pressures within the framework of atomistic thermodynamics. We also introduce and discuss methods for calculating phase diagrams of bulk materials and surfaces as well as point defect concentrations. In particular, we describe approaches for calculating the configurational density of states, which requires the evaluation of the energies of a large number of configurations. The cluster expansion method is therefore also discussed as a numerically efficient approach for evaluating these energies.

Reliable crystal structure predictions from first principles.

Project description:An inexpensive and reliable method for molecular crystal structure predictions (CSPs) has been developed. The new CSP protocol starts from a two-dimensional graph of crystal's monomer(s) and utilizes no experimental information. Using results of quantum mechanical calculations for molecular dimers, an accurate two-body, rigid-monomer ab initio-based force field (aiFF) for the crystal is developed. Since CSPs with aiFFs are essentially as expensive as with empirical FFs, tens of thousands of plausible polymorphs generated by the crystal packing procedures can be optimized. Here we show the robustness of this protocol which found the experimental crystal within the 20 most stable predicted polymorphs for each of the 15 investigated molecules. The ranking was further refined by performing periodic density-functional theory (DFT) plus dispersion correction (pDFT+D) calculations for these 20 top-ranked polymorphs, resulting in the experimental crystal ranked as number one for all the systems studied (and the second polymorph, if known, ranked in the top few). Alternatively, the polymorphs generated can be used to improve aiFFs, which also leads to rank one predictions. The proposed CSP protocol should result in aiFFs replacing empirical FFs in CSP research.

First-principles calculations on dislocations in MgO.

Project description:While ceramic materials are widely used in our society, their understanding of the plasticity is not fully understood. MgO is one of the prototypical ceramics, extensively investigated experimentally and theoretically. However, there is still controversy over whether edge or screw dislocations glide more easily. In this study, we directly model the atomic structures of the dislocation cores in MgO based on the first-principles calculations and estimate the Peierls stresses. Our results reveal that the screw dislocation on the primary slip system exhibits a smaller Peierls stress than the edge dislocation. The tendency is not consistent with metals, but rather with TiN, suggesting a characteristic inherent to rock-salt type materials.
