Polymerization of novel methacrylated anthraquinone dyes.

ABSTRACT: A new series of polymerizable methacrylated anthraquinone dyes has been synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions and subsequent methacrylation. Thereby, green 5,8-bis(4-(2-methacryloxyethyl)phenylamino)-1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone (2), blue 1,4-bis(4-((2-methacryloxyethyl)oxy)phenylamino)anthraquinone (6) and red 1-((2-methacryloxy-1,1-dimethylethyl)amino)anthraquinone (12), as well as 1-((1,3-dimethacryloxy-2-methylpropan-2-yl)amino)anthraquinone (15) were obtained. By mixing of these brilliant dyes in different ratios and concentrations, a broad color spectrum can be generated. After methacrylation, the monomeric dyes can be covalently emplaced into several copolymers. Due to two polymerizable functionalities, they can act as cross-linking agents. Thus, diffusion out of the polymer can be avoided, which increases the physiological compatibility and makes the dyes promising compounds for medical applications, such as iris implants.

The interaction of anthraquinone dyes with the plasmid-mediated OXA-2 beta-lactamase.

Project description:Although beta-lactamases do not require any nucleotide co-substrates, the OXA-2 type is inhibited competitively by Cibacron Blue 3GA, and by other anthraquinone dyes, including some simpler compounds with no side chain. The enzyme causes a red shift in the spectrum of Cibacron Blue. The beta-lactamase can be adsorbed in Blue Sepharose and specifically eluted by benzylpenicillin. These results indicate that the binding of anthraquinone dyes is a specific effect similar to that seen with many nucleotide-binding enzymes.

Efficient Biodegradation of Azo Dyes Catalyzed by the Anthraquinone-2-sulfonate and Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite.

Project description:An anthraquinone-2-sulfonate and reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (AQS@rGO) was prepared and the improvement on the biotic reduction of a pollutant, i.e., azo dye, was demonstrated. Electron paramagnetic resonance signal of the semi-quinone radical in the well-dispersed solid AQS@rGO solution was detected. Although the as-prepared AQS@rGO has a negligible adsorption capacity toward methyl orange (MO) dye, the decolorization efficiencies in both flask experiments and sequencing operation reactors in the presence of AQS@rGO were increased by more than 1.5 times as compared to that with graphene oxide, and an efficient and continuable catalytic effect on the decolorization of azo dyes in seven operation periods was maintained. The catalytic effect on reduction was caused by the formation of a space-charge layer, which facilitates the efficient e- transfer from the conductive rGO sheets to the C=O of the AQS molecule. The results suggested that the AQS@rGO may act as an efficient insoluble redox mediator, which is important for the pollution control by accelerating the extracellular electron transfer.

The Comparative Study on the Rapid Decolorization of Azo, Anthraquinone and Triphenylmethane Dyes by Anaerobic Sludge.

Project description:An anaerobic sludge (AS), capable of decolorizing a variety of synthetic dyes, was acclimated and is reported here. The sludge presented a much better dye decolorizing ability than that of different individual strains. A broad spectrum of dyes could be decolorized by the sludge. Continuous decolorization tests showed that the sludge exhibited the ability to decolorize repeated additions of dye. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of the dye wastewater reached 52% after 12 h of incubation. Polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) profiles revealed that the microbial community changed as a result of varying initial concentrations of dyes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that microbial populations in the sludge belonged to the phyla Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi and Proteobacteria. The degradation products of the three types of dye were identified. For azo dyes, the anaerobic sludge converted Methyl Orange to N,N-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine and 4-aminobenzenesulfonic acid; for triphenylmethane dyes, after Malachite Green was decolorized, the analyzed products were found to be a mixture of N,N-dimethylbenzenamine, 3-dimethyl-aminophenol and 4-dimethylaminobenzophenone; for anthraquinone dyes, two products (acetophenone and 2-methylbenzoic acid) were observed after Reactive Blue 19 decolorization. Together, these results suggest that the anaerobic sludge has promising potential for use in the treatment of industrial wastewater containing various types of dyes.

Macromolecular Dyes by Chromophore-Initiated Ring Opening Polymerization of L-Lactide.

Project description:End functionalized polylactides are prepared by ring opening polymerization of L-lactide in the presence of stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2). Three chromophores, 9H-carbazol-ethanol (CA), 9-fluorenyl-methanol (FM), and 2-(4-(2-chloro-4-nitrophenylazo)-N-ethylphenylamino)ethanol (Disperse Red 13, DR), are for the first time used as co-initiators in the polymerization process. The polymerization reaction is initiated by conventional thermal treatment, but in the case of FM, microwave-assisted polymerization is also carried out. CA and FM absorb and emit in the UV portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, whereas DR absorbs in the visible part. The obtained end-capped polylactides derivatives show the same photophysical properties as the initiator, so they are "macromolecular dyes" (MDs) that can be used "as synthesized" or can be blended with commercial poly(lactic acid) (PLA). The blends of PLA with MDs have ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption and fluorescence emission features similar to that of MDs and thermal properties typical of PLA. Finally, migration tests, carried out onto the blends of PLA with MDs and PLA with free chromophores, show that MDs are less released than free chromophores both in solution and in the solid phase.

Enhanced degradation of anthraquinone dyes by microbial monoculture and developed consortium through the production of specific enzymes.

Project description:The current study investigates the decolorization of Indanthrene Blue RS dye and the optimization of process parameters needed for effective decolorization by the bacterial consortium. The pure culture of strain TS8, PMS, and NCH has been isolated from the textile wastewater sample collected from local textile processing units outlet and dye contaminated soil from Odisha, India. A bacterial consortium-BP of Bacillus flexus TS8 (BF), Proteus mirabilis PMS (PM), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCH (PA) were developed. The physicochemical parameters were optimized to attain maximum decolorization efficacy. Degradation of Indanthrene Blue RS and the formation of metabolites were confirmed through UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, and GC-MS analysis. The developed consortium-BP showed an enhanced decolorization of Indanthrene Blue RS dye with an Average decolorization rate of 11,088 µg h-1 within 9 h compared to the individual strains under aerobic conditions. The supplementation of agricultural residual wastes showed increased decolorization efficiency of consortium-BP. Higher reduction in TOC and COD removal (≥ 80%) determined the mineralization of Indanthrene Blue RS by consortium-BP. Significant induction of various oxidoreductive enzymes in consortium-BP compared to that of Individual strains indicates their involvement in the overall decolorization and degradation process, with the higher protein concentration in the intracellular enzymes. Studies on the phytotoxicity effect revealed the non-toxic nature of the degraded products formed on mineralization of Indanthrene Blue RS by consortium-BP. This study represents a new approach for enhanced biodegradation using consortium-BP in treating textile wastewaters containing anthraquinone dyes.

Detection and toxicity modeling of anthraquinone dyes and chlorinated side products from a colored smoke pyrotechnic reaction.

Project description:"Green" pyrotechnics seek to remove known environmental pollutants and health hazards from their formulations. This chemical engineering approach often focuses on maintaining performance effects upon replacement of objectionable ingredients, yet neglects the chemical products formed by the exothermic reaction. In this work, milligram quantities of a lab-scale pyrotechnic red smoke composition were functioned within a thermal probe for product identification by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Thermally decomposed ingredients and new side product derivatives were identified at lower relative abundances to the intact organic dye (as the engineered sublimation product). Side products included chlorination of the organic dye donated by the chlorate oxidizer. Machine learning quantitative structure-activity relationship models computed impacts to health and environmental hazards. High to very high toxicities were predicted for inhalation, mutagenicity, developmental, and endocrine disruption for common military pyrotechnic dyes and their analogous chlorinated side products. These results underscore the need to revise objectives of "green" pyrotechnic engineering.

Development of Highly Soluble Anthraquinone Dichroic Dyes and Their Application to Three-Layer Guest-Host Liquid Crystal Displays

Project description:Therelationships between molecular structures and properties of anthraquinone dichroic dyes were studied and dyes with large solubilities and dichroic ratios were developed. The yellow anthraquinone dye behaves as a quencher of the coumarin dye, and the mixture has a large absorption coefficient without fluorescence. These technologies can enlarge the color reproduction area of three-layer guest-host liquid crystal displays (GH-LCDs) 1.6-fold. The performances of the prototype reflective three-layer GH-LCDs are as follows: the white state luminous reflectance is 43% and the contrast is 5.3, indicating that they are promising candidates for portable information systems with full-color images.

Highly Effective Sensitizers Based on Merocyanine Dyes for Visible Light Initiated Radical Polymerization.

Project description:The 5-(4-substituted-arylidene)-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-triones were tested as visible light sensitizers for phenyltrialkylborate salts applied to initiate polymerization processes. The initiation occurs as a result of photoinduced electron transfer from the borate salt to the merocyanine dye. The main factor that facilitates the step of the reaction is the free energy change for electron transfer. Its value is favorable according to the reduction properties of the dyes influenced by the type of amino groups and the oxidation potentials of the borate salts. The observed bleaching of the dyes during photopolymerization affects the yield of both the alkyl radical and sensitizer-based radical formation and thus the efficiency of the photopolymerization.

Guiding the Design of Organic Photocatalyst for PET-RAFT Polymerization: Halogenated Xanthene Dyes.

Project description:By examining structurally similar halogenated xanthene dyes, this study establishes a guiding principle for resolving structure-property- performance relationships in the photocontrolled PET-RAFT polymerization system (PET-RAFT: photoinduced electron/energy transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer). We investigated the effect of the halogen substituents on the photophysical and electrochemical properties of the xanthene dyes acting as photocatalysts and their resultant effect on the performance of PET-RAFT polymerization. Consideration of the structure- property-performance relationships allowed design of a new xanthene photocatalyst, where its photocatalytic activity (oxygen tolerance and polymerization rate) was successfully optimized for PET-RAFT polymerization. We expect that this study will serve as a theoretical framework in broadly guiding the design of high performance photocatalysts for organic photocatalysis.

Novel Anthraquinone Compounds Induce Cancer Cell Death through Paraptosis.

Project description:Novel anthraquinone compounds that induce ER stress and paraptosis-like cell death were designed and synthesized. Compound 4a is the first organic micromolecule to kill tumor cells by only paraptosis, and its mechanism of action has been further explored. Paraptosis does not appear to involve either phosphatidylserine translocation associated with apoptosis or cell cycle arrest. The bisbenzyloxy and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)formamide structures may be two critical pharmacophores for paraptosis. Bisbenzyloxy can induce ER stress, and the N-(2-hydroxyethyl)formamide structure can increase the ratio of LC3II/I and cytoplasmic vacuolization and facilitates paraptosis. Some antitumor drugs fail to eradicate malignant cell lines with impaired apoptotic pathways; paraptosis may be a route to kill such cells and provides a new potential strategy for cancer chemotherapy.
