Highly Effective Sensitizers Based on Merocyanine Dyes for Visible Light Initiated Radical Polymerization.

ABSTRACT: The 5-(4-substituted-arylidene)-1,3-dimethylpyrimidine-2,4,6-triones were tested as visible light sensitizers for phenyltrialkylborate salts applied to initiate polymerization processes. The initiation occurs as a result of photoinduced electron transfer from the borate salt to the merocyanine dye. The main factor that facilitates the step of the reaction is the free energy change for electron transfer. Its value is favorable according to the reduction properties of the dyes influenced by the type of amino groups and the oxidation potentials of the borate salts. The observed bleaching of the dyes during photopolymerization affects the yield of both the alkyl radical and sensitizer-based radical formation and thus the efficiency of the photopolymerization.

Project description:The control of the polymerization of a wide range of monomers under mild conditions by a single catalyst remains a major challenge in polymer science. We report a versatile, well-defined organocobalt salen complex to control living radical polymerization of different categories of monomers, including acrylates, acrylamides and vinyl acetate, under visible light irradiation at ambient temperature. Both household light and sunlight were effectively applied in the synthesis of polymers with controlled molecular weights and narrow polydispersities. Narrowly dispersed block copolymers (Mw/Mn < 1.2) were obtained under various conditions. The structures of the polymers were analyzed by 1H NMR, 2D NMR, 13C NMR, GPC, MALDI-TOF-MS and isotopic labeling experiments, which showed that the ? and ? ends of the polymer chains were capped with (salen)Co and -CO2CH3 segments, respectively, from the photoinitiator (salen)Co-CO2CH3. The ? end was easily functionalized through oxygen insertion followed by hydrolysis from 18O2 to -18OH. This robust system can proceed without any additives, and offers a versatile and green way to produce well-defined homo and block copolymers.

Visible Light-Induced Metal Free Surface Initiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate on SBA-15.

Project description:Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) is one of the most versatile techniques to modify the surface properties of materials. Recent developed metal-free SI-ATRP makes such techniques more widely applicable. Herein photo-induced metal-free SI-ATRP of methacrylates, such as methyl methacrylate, N-isopropanyl acrylamide, and N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, on the surface of SBA-15 was reported to fabricate organic-inorganic hybrid materials. A SBA-15-based polymeric composite with an adjustable graft ratio was obtained. The structure evolution during the SI-ATRP modification of SBA-15 was monitored and verified by FT-IR, XPS, TGA, BET, and TEM. The obtained polymeric composite showed enhanced adsorption ability for the model compound toluene in aqueous conditions. This procedure provides a low-cost, readily available, and easy modification method to synthesize polymeric composites without the contamination of metal.

Visible-light organic photocatalysis for latent radical-initiated polymerization via 2e?/1H? transfers: initiation with parallels to photosynthesis.

Project description:We report the latent production of free radicals from energy stored in a redox potential through a 2e(-)/1H(+) transfer process, analogous to energy harvesting in photosynthesis, using visible-light organic photoredox catalysis (photocatalysis) of methylene blue chromophore with a sacrificial sterically hindered amine reductant and an onium salt oxidant. This enables light-initiated free-radical polymerization to continue over extended time intervals (hours) in the dark after brief (seconds) low-intensity illumination and beyond the spatial reach of light by diffusion of the metastable leuco-methylene blue photoproduct. The present organic photoredox catalysis system functions via a 2e(-)/1H(+) shuttle mechanism, as opposed to the 1e(-) transfer process typical of organometallic-based and conventional organic multicomponent photoinitiator formulations. This prevents immediate formation of open-shell (radical) intermediates from the amine upon light absorption and enables the "storage" of light-energy without spontaneous initiation of the polymerization. Latent energy release and radical production are then controlled by the subsequent light-independent reaction (analogous to the Calvin cycle) between leuco-methylene blue and the onium salt oxidant that is responsible for regeneration of the organic methylene blue photocatalyst. This robust approach for photocatalysis-based energy harvesting and extended release in the dark enables temporally controlled redox initiation of polymer syntheses under low-intensity short exposure conditions and permits visible-light-mediated synthesis of polymers at least 1 order of magnitude thicker than achievable with conventional photoinitiated formulations and irradiation regimes.

Surface-Initiated Photoinduced Iron-Catalyzed Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization with ppm Concentration of FeBr<sub>3</sub> under Visible Light.

Project description:Reversible deactivation radical polymerizations with reduced amount of organometallic catalyst are currently a field of interest of many applications. One of the very promising techniques is photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) that is mainly studied for copper catalysts in the solution. Recently, advantageous iron-catalyzed photo-ATRP (photo-Fe-ATRP) compatible with high demanding biological applications was presented. In response to that, we developed surface-initiated photo-Fe-ATRP (SI-photo-Fe-ATRP) that was used for facile synthesis of poly(methyl methacrylate) brushes with the presence of only 200 ppm of FeBr3/tetrabutylammonium bromide catalyst (FeBr3/TBABr) under visible light irradiation (wavelength: 450 nm). The kinetics of both SI-photo-Fe-ATRP and photo-Fe-ATRP in solution were compared and followed by 1H NMR, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Brush grafting densities were determined using two methodologies. The influence of the sacrificial initiator on the kinetics of brush growth was studied. It was found that SI-photo-Fe-ATRP could be effectively controlled even without any sacrificial initiators thanks to in situ production of ATRP initiator in solution as a result of reaction between the monomer and Br radicals generated in photoreduction of FeBr3/TBABr. The optimized and simplified reaction setup allowed synthesis of very thick (up to 110 nm) PMMA brushes at room temperature, under visible light with only 200 ppm of iron-based catalyst. The same reaction conditions, but with the presence of sacrificial initiator, enabled formation of much thinner layers (18 nm).

Visible light-initiated radical 1,3-difunctionalization of β,γ-unsaturated ketones.

Project description:Radical-mediated 1,2-difunctionalization of olefins is a well-established synthetic technique widely used in the rapid construction of structurally diverse molecular entities. However, radical-mediated 1,3-difunctionalization reactions are rare, and the substrates are generally limited to strained skeletons. Here, we report a practical approach for 1,3-difunctionalization of available β,γ-unsaturated ketones via a radical cascade process including visible light-irradiated radical addition, thermodynamic stability-driven 1,2-carbonyl migration from unactivated all-carbon quaternary center, and terminal C-radical varied transformations. Various highly functionalized alkyl skeletons with different valuable functional groups at positions 1 and 3 and the carbonyl group at position 2 have been synthesized through a radical chain pathway or Cu-catalyzed Ritter-type reaction. Moreover, this protocol provides a real case of diversity-oriented radical rearrangement for drug discovery. We identified a previously unknown chemotype of dual inhibitors for hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and WNT signaling pathways from products. These small-molecule inhibitors could suppress HIF and WNT signaling-dependent HCT116 cell growth in 2D and 3D culture systems.

Effective Singlet Oxygen Sensitizers Based on the Phenazine Skeleton as Efficient Light Absorbers in Dye Photoinitiating Systems for Radical Polymerization of Acrylates.

Project description:A series of dyes based on the phenazine skeleton were synthesized. They differed in the number of conjugated double bonds, the arrangement of aromatic rings (linear and/or angular system), as well as the number and position of nitrogen atoms in the molecule. These compounds were investigated as potential singlet oxygen sensitizers and visible light absorbers in dye photoinitiating systems for radical polymerization. The quantum yield of the singlet oxygen formation was determined by the comparative method based on the 1H NMR spectra recorded for the tested dyes in the presence of 2,3-diphenyl-p-dioxene before and after irradiation. The quantum yield of the triplet state formation was estimated based on the transient absorption spectra recorded using the nanosecond flash photolysis technique. The effectiveness of the dye photoinitiating system was characterized by the initial rate of trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) polymerization. In the investigated photoinitiating systems, the sensitizer was an electron acceptor, whereas the co-initiator was an electron donor. The effectiveness of TMPTA photoinitiated polymerization clearly depended on the arrangement of aromatic rings and the number of nitrogen atoms in the modified phenazine structure as well as the quantum yield of the triplet state formation of the photosensitizer in the visible light region.

Visible-Light Initiated Free-Radical/Cationic Ring-Opening Hybrid Photopolymerization of Methacrylate/Epoxy: Polymerization Kinetics, Crosslinking Structure, and Dynamic Mechanical Properties.

Project description:The effects of polymerization kinetics and chemical miscibility on the crosslinking structure and mechanical properties of polymers cured by visible-light initiated free-radical/cationic ring-opening hybrid photopolymerization are determined. A three-component initiator system is used and the monomer system contains methacrylates and epoxides. The photopolymerization kinetics is monitored in situ by Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance. The crosslinking structure is studied by modulated differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. X-ray microcomputed tomography is used to evaluate microphase separation. The mechanical properties of polymers formed by hybrid formed by free-radical polymerization. These investigations mark the first time that the benefits of the chain transfer reaction between epoxy and hydroxyl groups of methacrylate, on the crosslinking network and microphase separation during hybrid visible-light initiated photopolymerization, have been determined.

Donor-acceptor covalent organic frameworks for visible light induced free radical polymerization.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising materials for applications in photocatalysis, due to their conjugated, porous and chemically stable architectures. Alternating electron donor-acceptor-type structures are known to enhance charge carrier transport mobility and stability in polymers and are therefore also interesting building units for COFs used as photocatalysts but also as photoinitiator. In this work, two donor-acceptor COFs using electron deficient 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)trianiline and electron rich thiophene-based thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarbaldehyde or [2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-dicarbaldehyde linkers are presented. The resulting crystalline and porous COFs have been applied as photoinitiator for visible light induced free radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA). These results pave the way to the development of robust and heterogeneous systems for photochemistry that offers the transfer of radicals induced by visible light.

Semiconductor nanoparticle-based hydrogels prepared via self-initiated polymerization under sunlight, even visible light.

Project description:Since ancient times, people have used photosynthesized wood, bamboo, and cotton as building and clothing materials. The advantages of photo polymerization include the mild and easy process. However, the direct use of available sunlight for the preparation of materials is still a challenge due to its rather dilute intensity. Here, we show that semiconductor nanoparticles can be used for initiating monomer polymerization under sunlight and for cross-linking to form nanocomposite hydrogels with the aid of clay nanosheets. Hydrogels are an emerging multifunctional platform because they can be easily prepared using solar energy, retain semiconductor nanoparticle properties after immobilization, exhibit excellent mechanical strength (maximum compressive strength of 4.153 MPa and tensile strength 1.535 MPa) and high elasticity (maximum elongation of 2784%), and enable recyclable photodegradation of pollutants. This work suggests that functional nanoparticles can be immobilized in hydrogels for their collective application after combining their mechanical and physiochemical properties.

Biocompatible Diselenide-Containing Protein Hydrogels with Effective Visible-Light-Initiated Self-Healing Properties.

Project description:Smart hydrogels are typical functional soft materials, but their functional and mechanical properties are compromised upon micro- or macro-mechanical damage. In contrast, hydrogels with self-healing properties overcome this limitation. Herein, a dual dynamic bind, cross-linked, self-healing protein hydrogel is prepared, based on Schiff base bonds and diselenide bonds. The Schiff base bond is a typical dynamic covalent bond and the diselenide bond is an emerging dynamic covalent bond with a visible light response, which gives the resulting hydrogel a dual response in visible light and a desirable self-healing ability. The diselenide-containing protein hydrogels were biocompatible due to the fact that their main component was protein. In addition, the hydrogels loaded with glucose oxidase (GOx) could be transformed into sols in glucose solution due to the sensitive response of the diselenide bonds to the generated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by enzymatic catalysis. This work demonstrated a diselenide-containing protein hydrogel that could efficiently self-heal up to nearly 100% without compromising their mechanical properties under visible light at room temperature.
