Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPRs) confer adaptive immunity to prokaryotes through a small RNA-mediated mechanism. Specific endoribonucleases are required by all CRISPR-bearing organisms to process CRISPR RNAs into small RNA that serve as guides for defensive effector complexes.
