TiO2 modified FeS nanostructures with enhanced electrochemical performance for lithium-ion batteries.

ABSTRACT: Anatase TiO2 modified FeS nanowires assembled by numerous nanosheets were synthesized by using a typical hydrothermal method. The carbon-free nanocoated composite electrodes exhibit improved reversible capacity of 510 mAh g(-1) after 100 discharge/charge cycles at 200 mA g(-1), much higher than that of the pristine FeS nanostructures, and long-term cycling stability with little performance degradation even after 500 discharge/charge cycles at current density of 400 mA g(-1). Full batteries fabricated using the FeS@TiO2 nanostructures anode and the LiMn2O4 nanowires cathode with excellent stability, and good rate capacities could also be achieved. The enhanced electrochemical performance of the composite electrodes can be attributed to the improved conductively of the integrated electrodes and the enhanced kinetics of lithium insertion/extraction at the electrode/electrolyte interface because of the incorporation of anatase TiO2 phase.

MOF-Derived FeS/C Nanosheets for High Performance Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:In recent years, transitional metal sulfides have received much attention as lithium ion batteries (LIBs) anode. In this paper, FeS/C nanosheets are prepared through Fe-based metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) as a precursor. The electrochemical performance of FeS/C nanosheets has been obviously improved due to the synergistic effect of the oxygen doped carbon and the special flake morphology. When the test current density is 0.1 A/g, the initial discharge capacities of FeS/C nanosheets is up to 1702 mAh/g and can retain reversible capacities of about 830 mAh/g over 150 cycles with the voltage ranging from 0.01 V to 3 V. Moreover, these composite materials are proved to have a good rate performance and the capacities reach 460 mAh/g even at a higher current density of 5 A/g. This work suggests that FeS/C nanosheets are excellent anode materials for LIBs.

ZnO quantum dot-modified rGO with enhanced electrochemical performance for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur batteries are considered the most promising next-generation energy storage devices. However, problems like sluggish reaction kinetics and severe shuttle effect need to be solved before the commercialization of Li-S batteries. Here, we successfully prepared ZnO quantum dot-modified reduced graphene oxide (rGO@ZnO QDs), and first introduced it into Li-S cathodes (rGO@ZnO QDs/S). Due to its merits of a catalysis effect and enhancing the reaction kinetics, low surface impedance, and efficient adsorption of polysulfide, rGO@ZnO QDs/S presented excellent rate capacity with clear discharge plateaus even at a high rate of 4C, and superb cycle performance. An initial discharge capacity of 998.8 mA h g-1 was delivered, of which 73.3% was retained after 400 cycles at a high rate of 1C. This work provides a new concept to introduce quantum dots into lithium-sulfur cathodes to realize better electrochemical performance.

CNT@TiO2 nanohybrids for high-performance anode of lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:This work describes a potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), namely, anatase TiO2 nanoparticle-decorated carbon nanotubes (CNTs@TiO2). The electrochemical properties of CNTs@TiO2 were thoroughly investigated using various electrochemical techniques, including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, galvanostatic cycling, and rate experiments. It was revealed that compared with pure TiO2 nanoparticles and CNTs alone, the CNT@TiO2 nanohybrids offered superior rate capability and achieved better cycling performance when used as anodes of LIBs. The CNT@TiO2 nanohybrids exhibited a cycling stability with high reversible capacity of about 190 mAh g-1 after 120 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1 and an excellent rate capability (up to 100 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1,000 mA g-1).

Silicon and Carbon Nanocomposite Spheres with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance for Full Cell Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Herein, facile synthesis of monodisperse silicon and carbon nanocomposite spheres (MSNSs) is achieved via a simple and scalable surface-protected magnesiothermic reduction with subsequent chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. Li-ion batteries (LIBs) were fabricated to test the utility of MSNSs as an anode material. LIB anodes based on MSNSs demonstrate a high reversible capacity of 3207 mAh g-1, superior rate performance, and excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the performance of full cell LIBs was evaluated by using MSNS anode and a LiCoO2 cathode with practical electrode loadings. The MSNS/LiCoO2 full cell demonstrates high gravimetric energy density in the order of 850 Wh L-1 with excellent cycling stability. This work shows a proof of concept of the use of monodisperse Si and C nanocomposite spheres toward practical lithium-ion battery applications.

Engineering Na-Mo-O/Graphene Oxide Composites with Enhanced Electrochemical Performance for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Sodium molybdate (Na-Mo-O) wrapped by graphene oxide (GO) composites have been prepared via a simple in-situ precipitation method at room temperature. The composites are mainly constructed with one dimension (1D) ultra-long sodium molybdate nanorods, which are wrapped by the flexible GO. The introduction of GO is expected to not merely provide more active sites for lithium-ions storage, but also improve the charge transfer rate of the electrode. The testing electrochemical performances corroborated the standpoint: The Na-Mo-O/GO composites delivers specific capacities of 718 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g-1, and 570 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at a high rate of 500 mA g-1; for comparison, the bare Na-Mo-O nanorod shows a severe capacity decay, which deliver only 332 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g-1. In view of the cost-efficient and less time-consuming in synthesis, and one-step preparation without further treatment, these Na-Mo-O nanorods/GO composites present potential and prospective anodes for LIBs.

Facile Synthesis of FeS@C Particles Toward High-Performance Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:High energy density batteries with high performance are significantly important for intelligent electrical vehicular systems. Iron sulfurs are recognized as one of the most promising anodes for high energy density lithium-ion batteries because of their high theoretical specific capacity and relatively stable electrochemical performance. However, their large-scale commercialized application for lithium-ion batteries are plagued by high-cost and complicated preparation methods. Here, we report a simple and cost-effective method for the scalable synthesis of nanoconfined FeS in porous carbon (defined as FeS@C) as anodes by direct pyrolysis of an iron(III) p-toluenesulfonate precursor. The carbon architecture embedded with FeS nanoparticles provides a rapid electron transport property, and its hierarchical porous structure effectively enhances the ion transport rate, thereby leading to a good electrochemical performance. The resultant FeS@C anodes exhibit high reversible capacity and long cycle life up to 500 cycles at high current density. This work provides a simple strategy for the mass production of FeS@C particles, which represents a critical step forward toward practical applications of iron sulfurs anodes.

Hierarchical Nanotube-Constructed Porous TiO2-B Spheres for High Performance Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:Hierarchically structured porous TiO2-B spheres have been synthesized via a hydrothermal process using amorphous titania/oleylamine composites as a self-sacrificing template. The TiO2-B spheres are constructed by interconnected nanotubes and possess a high specific surface area of 295 m(2) g(-1). When evaluated as an anode material in lithium-half cells, the as-obtained TiO2-B material exhibits high and reversible lithium storage capacity of 270 mA h g(-1) at 1 C (340 mA g(-1)), excellent rate capability of 221 mA h g(-1) at 10 C, and long cycle life with over 70% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 10 C. The superior electrochemical performance of TiO2-B material strongly correlates to the synergetic superiorities with a combination of TiO2-B polymorph, hierarchically porous structure, interconnected nanotubes and spherical morphology. Post-mortem structural analyses reveal some discrete cubic LiTiO2 nanodots formed on the outer surfaces of TiO2-B nanotubes, which might account for the slight capacity loss upon prolonged electrochemical cycling.

Rheological phase reaction synthesis and electrochemical performance of rufigallol anode for lithium ion batteries.

Project description:1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydroxy-anthraquinone (rufigallol) and its metal-organic complex (rufigallol-Li/Ni, R-LN) were both synthesized. The electrochemical performance investigation of rufigallol and R-LN as anodes for lithium ion batteries indicates that pure rufigallol delivers high initial capacity but poor cycling stability, by contrast, the R-LN complex exhibits high initial capacity and excellent cycling stability.

Enhanced Electrochemical performance at high temperature of Cobalt Oxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites and its application in lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:We report a microwave irradiation method for the preparation of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) based Co3O4 nanocomposites as anodes for lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries. The Co3O4/RGO nanocomposites displayed good electrochemical behavior as anodic materials for li-ion batteries when compared to pure Co3O4. The Co3O4/RGO nanocomposites with low RGO content resulted in stable electrochemical performance with 100% coulombic efficiency at a high current density of 500?mA/g for 50 cycles. The enhanced capacity of the Co3O4/RGO nanocomposites is due to the incorporation of RGO, which resulted in a four times larger surface area than that of Co3O4. This increased surface area could facilitate the absorption of more lithium ions, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. Interestingly, the novelty of this work is that the designed li-ion batteries showed stable electrochemical performance even at a high temperature of 100?°C, which might be useful for rechargeable battery applications in a wide temperature range.

Enhanced Electrochemical Performance of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Composite Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries by Selective Doping of K+/Cl- and K+/F.

Project description:K+/Cl- and K+/F- co-doped LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) materials were successfully synthesized via a solid-state method. Structural characterization revealed that both K+/Cl- and K+/F- co-doping reduced the LixNi1-xO impurities and enlarged the lattice parameters compared to those of pure LNMO. Besides this, the K+/F- co-doping decreased the Mn3+ ion content, which could inhibit the Jahn-Teller distortion and was beneficial to the cycling performance. Furthermore, both the K+/Cl- and the K+/F- co-doping reduced the particle size and made the particles more uniform. The K+/Cl- co-doped particles possessed a similar octahedral structure to that of pure LNMO. In contrast, as the K+/F- co-doping amount increased, the crystal structure became a truncated octahedral shape. The Li+ diffusion coefficient calculated from the CV tests showed that both K+/Cl- and K+/F- co-doping facilitated Li+ diffusion in the LNMO. The impedance tests showed that the charge transfer resistances were reduced by the co-doping. These results indicated that both the K+/Cl- and the K+/F- co-doping stabilized the crystal structures, facilitated Li+ diffusion, modified the particle morphologies, and increased the electrochemical kinetics. Benefiting from the unique advantages of the co-doping, the K+/Cl- and K+/F- co-doped samples exhibited improved rate and cycling performances. The K+/Cl- co-doped Li0.97K0.03Ni0.5Mn1.5O3.97Cl0.03 (LNMO-KCl0.03) exhibited the best rate capability with discharge capacities of 116.1, 109.3, and 93.9 mAh g-1 at high C-rates of 5C, 7C, and 10C, respectively. Moreover, the K+/F- co-doped Li0.98K0.02Ni0.5Mn1.5O3.98F0.02 (LNMO-KF0.02) delivered excellent cycling stability, maintaining 85.8% of its initial discharge capacity after circulation for 500 cycles at 5C. Therefore, the K+/Cl- or K+/F- co-doping strategy proposed herein will play a significant role in the further construction of other high-voltage cathodes for high-energy LIBs.
