An unprecedented (3,4,24)-connected heteropolyoxozincate organic framework as heterogeneous crystalline Lewis acid catalyst for biodiesel production.

ABSTRACT: A novel 3D hexadecanuclear heteropolyoxozincate organic framework, IFMC-200, has been successfully synthesized based on a late transition metal-oxygen cluster. IFMC-200 not only represents the first example of (3,4,24)-connected framework but also contains the first 24-connected single metal cluster in a crystal structure. It exhibits superior thermal stability, good water-stability, and even insensitivity to the existence of acid and base within a certain range of pH values. Furthermore, it performs as a heterogeneous crystalline Lewis acid catalyst with good activity for the conversion of long-chain fatty acids rather than short-chain ones, and high recycling efficiency for esterification reaction of fatty acids with alcohols to produce biodiesel.

A novel 3D terbium metal-organic framework as a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst for the cyanosilylation of aldehyde.

Project description:A novel 3D lanthanide(iii) metal-organic framework (MOF) (namely Tb-MOF), was synthesized by self-assembly from Tb(iii) ion nitrate and the rigid organic ligand H2sbdc (H2sbdc = 5,5-dioxo-5H-dibenzo[b,d]thiophene-3,7-dicarboxylic acid), and could work as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes at room temperature. The obtained Tb-MOF has been characterized and analysed in detail by single crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and so on. The pores of Tb-MOF provided a microenvironment that was beneficial for the substrates to be close to the Lewis acid catalytic sites. The IR spectrogram and the fluorescence titration proved that the substrates could be activated inside the channel of Tb-MOF. The heterogeneous Tb-MOF catalyst with fine catalytic efficiency exhibited a high TON (TON = 460), and could be recycled at least three times without significantly reducing its activity.

Efficient biodiesel production from oleic and palmitic acid using a novel molybdenum metal-organic framework as efficient and reusable catalyst.

Project description:In this study, metal-organic framework based on molybdenum and piperidine-4-carboxylic acid, was synthesized through a simple solvothermal method and employed as an effective catalyst for biodiesel production from oleic acid and palmitic acid via esterification reaction. The prepared catalyst was characterized by XRD, FTIR, TGA, DSC, BET, SEM, TEM, ICP-OES, X-ray mapping and EDX analysis. The resulting Mo-MOF catalyst exhibit a rod-like morphology, specific surface area of 56 m2/g, and thermal stability up to 300 °C. The solid catalyst exhibited high activities for esterification of oleic acid and palmitic acid. Moreover, the catalyst could be simply recovered and efficiently reutilized for several times without significant loss in its activity, also obtained results revealed that metal-organic framework could be used for the appropriate and rapid biodiesel production.

Metal-organic frameworks incorporating azobenzene-based ligands as a heterogeneous Lewis-acid catalyst for cyanosilylation of imines.

Project description:In this work, two novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized by the reaction of azobenzene-based ligands and Zn(NO3)2/CdCO3 under solvothermal conditions with the formula of {[Zn2(abtc)(azpy)(H2O)2]·4H2O} n (1) and {[Cd(abtc)0.5(azpy)0.5(H2O)]·3H2O} n (2) (H4abtc = 3,3',5,5'-azobenzene tetracarboxylic acid, azpy = 4,4'-azobipyridine). According to the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis, complexes 1 and 2 possessed quite similar structures except for the coordination modes of the central metal nodes attributed to the difference between the cationic radius of Zn(ii) and Cd(ii). The Zn(ii) cations in 1 adopted a distorted seesaw coordination geometry and the coordination between Zn(ii) and organic linkers gave two-dimensional (2D) coordination networks, while the Cd(ii) cations in 2 could also bind with the carboxylate groups from neighboring coordination networks to form a three-dimensional (3D) coordination framework. Furthermore, complexes 1 and 2 showed high catalytic activity as heterogeneous Lewis-acid catalysts towards the cyanosilylation of imines with satisfactory reusability under mild conditions and the similar catalytic performance of 1 and 2 could be attributed to the similarity in their structures. A prudent mechanism has been proposed as well to elucidate the role of complexes 1 and 2 in the catalytic process.

Exceptionally Efficient and Recyclable Heterogeneous Metal-Organic Framework Catalyst for Glucose Isomerization in Water.

Project description:Heterogeneous catalysts are desired for the conversion of glucose, the most abundant sugar in renewable biomass, but presently their synthesis requires highly toxic chemicals with long synthesis times. We report the conversion of glucose into fructose and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural on a heterogeneous catalyst that is stable and selective and operates in the most environmentally benign solvent, water. We used a bifunctional solid with Lewis and Brønsted acid sites by partially replacing the organic linker of the zirconium organic framework UiO-66 with 2-monosulfo-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate. This catalyst showed high product selectivity (90?%) to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and fructose at 140?°C in water after a reaction time of 3?h. It was recyclable and showed only a minor loss in activity after the third recycle, offering a realistic solution for the bottleneck glucose isomerization reaction for scale-up and industrial application of biomass utilization.

Direct production of a genetically-encoded immobilized biodiesel catalyst.

Project description:The use of immobilized enzymes as biocatalysts has great potential to improve the efficiency and environmental sustainability of many industrial processes. Here, we report a novel approach that allows for the direct production of a highly active immobilized lipase within the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. Cry3Aa-lipA crystals were generated by genetically fusing Bacillus subtilis lipase A to Cry3Aa, a protein that naturally forms crystals in the bacteria. The crystal framework significantly stabilized the lipase against denaturation in organic solvents and high temperatures, resulting in a highly efficient fusion crystal that could catalyze the conversion of triacylglycerols to fatty acid methyl ester biodiesel to near-completion over 10 cycles. The simplicity and robustness of the Cry-fusion crystal (CFC) immobilization system could make it an appealing platform for generating industrial biocatalysts for multiple bioprocesses.

Optimization and blends study of heterogeneous acid catalyst-assisted esterification of palm oil industry by-product for biodiesel production.

Project description:The optimum conditions to produce palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD)-derived-methyl esters via esterification have been demonstrated with the aid of the response surface methodology (RSM) with central composite rotatable design in the presence of heterogeneous acid catalyst. The effect of four reaction variables, reaction time (30-110 min), reaction temperature (30-70°C), catalyst concentration (1-3 wt.%) and methanol : PFAD molar ratio (3 : 1-11 : 1), were investigated. The reaction time had the most influence on the yield response, while the interaction between the reaction time and the catalyst concentration, with an F-value of 95.61, contributed the most to the esterification reaction. The model had an R 2-value of 0.9855, suggesting a fit model, which gave a maximum yield of 95%. The fuel properties of produced PFAD methyl ester were appraised based on the acid value, iodine value, cloud and pour points, flash point, kinematic viscosity, density, ash and water contents and were compared with biodiesel EN 14214 and ASTM D-6751 standard limits. The PFAD methyl ester was further blended with petro-diesel from B0, B3, B5, B10, B20 and B100, on a volumetric basis. The blends were characterized by TGA, DTG and FTIR. With an acid value of 0.42 (mg KOH g-1), iodine value of 63 (g.I2/100 g), kinematic viscosity of 4.31 (mm2 s-1), the PFAD methyl ester has shown good fuel potential, as all of its fuel properties were within the permissible international standards for biodiesel.

Metal-Organic Framework MIL-101(Cr) as an Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for Clean Synthesis of Benzoazoles.

Project description:A metal-organic framework [MIL-101(Cr)] was used as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst in the synthesis of benzoazoles (benzimidazole, benzothiazole, and benzoxazole), and quantitative conversion of products were obtained under optimized reaction conditions. Frustrated Lewis pair catalyst realizes efficient green diesel production.

Project description:Hydrotreating renewable oils over sulfided metal catalysts is commercially applied to produce green diesel, but it requires a continuous sulfur replenishment to maintain catalyst activity, which inevitably results in sulfur contamination and increases production costs. We report a robust P-doped NiAl-oxide catalyst with frustrated Lewis pairs (i.e., P atom bonded with the O atom acts as an electron donor, while the spatially separated Ni atom acts as an electron acceptor) that allows efficient green diesel production without sulfur replenishment. The catalyst runs more than 500 h at a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 28.3 h-1 without deactivation (methyl laurate as a model compound), and is able to completely convert a real feedstock of soybean oil to diesel-range hydrocarbons with selectivity >90% during 500 h of operation. This work is expected to open up a new avenue for designing non-sulfur catalysts that can make the green diesel production greener.

Data on PKO biodiesel production using CaO catalyst from Turkey bones.

Project description:In this research paper the production of biodiesel from palm kernel oil (PKO) using CaO obtained from waste turkey bones (WTB) and analytical grade calcium oxide was investigated. Treated WTB was reduced to fine particulate size of <150 µm and then calcinated at 800 °C for 3 h to increase its catalytic activity by its conversion from Calcium phosphate hydroxide (Ca10P6O26H2) to CaO. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescent (XRF) analysis of the analytical grade CaO, uncalcined and calcined WTB were carried out to establish their elemental chemical composition. The transesterification reaction between the triglyceride of palm kernel oil (PKO) and methanol was carried out at a constant agitation speed of 600 rpm and temperature of 65 °C, with varied methanol to oil molar ratio (8-14), catalyst concentration (1-7 wt/wt%) and the reaction time (1-3 h). Minitab 17 software (using response surface method) was employed for the design of experiment and statistical analysis required in the transesterification process of biodiesel production. The qualities of the biodiesel produced were assessed and the results obtained showed conformity of the biodiesel produced to the ASTM standard for biodiesel.
