Highly tunable aptasensing microarrays with graphene oxide multilayers.

ABSTRACT: A highly tunable layer-by-layer (LbL)-assembled graphene oxide (GO) array has been devised for high-throughput multiplex protein sensing. In this array, the fluorescence of different target-bound aptamers labeled with dye is efficiently quenched by GO through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and simultaneous multiplex target detection is performed by recovering the quenched fluorescence caused by specific binding between an aptamer and a protein. Thin GO films consisting of 10 bilayers displayed a high quenching ability, yielding over 85% fluorescence quenching with the addition of a 2 ?M dye-labeled aptamer. The limit for human thrombin detection in the 6- and 10-bilayered GO array is estimated to be 0.1 and 0.001 nM, respectively, indicating highly tunable nature of LbL assembled GO multilayers in controlling the sensitivity of graphene-based FRET aptasensor. Furthermore, the GO chip could be reused up to four times simply by cleaning it with distilled water.

Project description:The ability of membrane technologies to dynamically tune the transport behavior for gases and liquids is critical for their applications. Although various methods have been developed to improve membrane success, tradeoffs still exist among their properties, such as permeability, selectivity, fouling resistance, and stability, which can greatly affect the performance of membranes. Existing elastomeric membrane designs can provide antifracture properties and flexibility; however, these designs still face certain challenges, such as low tensile strength and reliability. Additionally, researchers have not yet thoroughly developed membranes that can avoid fouling issues while realizing precise dynamic control over the transport substances. In this study, we show a versatile strategy for preparing graphene oxide-reinforced elastomeric liquid gating membranes that can finely modulate and dynamically tune the sorting of a wide range of gases and liquids under constant applied pressures. Moreover, the produced membranes exhibit antifouling properties and are adaptable to different length scales, pressures, and environments. The filling of graphene oxide in the thermoplastic polyurethane matrix enhances the composites through hydrogen bonds. Experiments and theoretical calculations are carried out to demonstrate the stability of our system. Our membrane exhibits good stretchability, recovery, and durability due to the elastic nature of the solid matrix and dynamic nature of the gating liquid. Dynamic control over the transport of gases and liquids is achieved through our optimized interfacial design and controllable pore deformation, which is induced by mechanical stimuli. Our strategy will create new opportunities for many applications, such as gas-involved chemical reactions, multiphase separation, microfluidics, multiphase microreactors, and particulate material synthesis.

Tunable room-temperature ferromagnet using an iron-oxide and graphene oxide nanocomposite.

Project description:Magnetic materials have found wide application ranging from electronics and memories to medicine. Essential to these advances is the control of the magnetic order. To date, most room-temperature applications have a fixed magnetic moment whose orientation is manipulated for functionality. Here we demonstrate an iron-oxide and graphene oxide nanocomposite based device that acts as a tunable ferromagnet at room temperature. Not only can we tune its transition temperature in a wide range of temperatures around room temperature, but the magnetization can also be tuned from zero to 0.011 A m(2)/kg through an initialization process with two readily accessible knobs (magnetic field and electric current), after which the system retains its magnetic properties semi-permanently until the next initialization process. We construct a theoretical model to illustrate that this tunability originates from an indirect exchange interaction mediated by spin-imbalanced electrons inside the nanocomposite.

Quantum confinement-induced tunable exciton states in graphene oxide.

Project description:Graphene oxide has recently been considered to be a potential replacement for cadmium-based quantum dots due to its expected high fluorescence. Although previously reported, the origin of the luminescence in graphene oxide is still controversial. Here, we report the presence of core/valence excitons in graphene-based materials, a basic ingredient for optical devices, induced by quantum confinement. Electron confinement in the unreacted graphitic regions of graphene oxide was probed by high resolution X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Using experiments and simulations, we were able to tune the core/valence exciton energy by manipulating the size of graphitic regions through the degree of oxidation. The binding energy of an exciton in highly oxidized graphene oxide is similar to that in organic electroluminescent materials. These results open the possibility of graphene oxide-based optoelectronic device technology.

Graphene Origami with Highly Tunable Coefficient of Thermal Expansion.

Project description:The coefficient of thermal expansion, which measures the change in length, area, or volume of a material upon heating, is a fundamental parameter with great relevance for many applications. Although there are various routes to design materials with targeted coefficient of thermal expansion at the macroscale, no approaches exist to achieve a wide range of values in graphene-based structures. Here, we use molecular dynamics simulations to show that graphene origami structures obtained through pattern-based surface functionalization provide tunable coefficients of thermal expansion from large negative to large positive. We show that the mechanisms giving rise to this property are exclusive to graphene origami structures, emerging from a combination of surface functionalization, large out-of-plane thermal fluctuations, and the three-dimensional geometry of origami structures.

Oxidative Layer-By-Layer Multilayers Based on Metal Coordination: Influence of Intervening Graphene Oxide Layers.

Project description:Layer-by-layer (LbL) fabricated oxidative multilayers consisting of successive layers of inorganic polyphosphate (PP) and Ce(IV) can electrolessly form thin conducting polymer films on their surface. We describe the effect of substituting every second PP layer in the (PP/Ce) multilayers for graphene oxide (GO) as a means of modifying the structure and mechanical properties of these (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) films and enhancing their growth. Both types of LbL films are based on reversible coordinative bonding between the metal ions and the oxygen-bearing groups in PP and GO, instead of purely electrostatic interactions. The GO incorporation leads to the doubling of the areal mass density and to a dry film thickness close to 300 nm after 4 (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) tetralayers. The film roughness increases significantly with thickness. The (PP/Ce) films are soft materials with approximately equal shear storage and loss moduli, but the incorporation of GO doubles the storage modulus. PP displays a marked terminating layer effect and practically eliminates mechanical losses, making the (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) films almost pure soft elastomers. The smoothness of the (PP/Ce) films and the PP-termination effects are attributed to the reversible coordinative bonding. The (GO/Ce/PP/Ce) films oxidize pyrrole and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and form polypyrrole and PEDOT films on their surfaces. These polymer films are considerably thicker than those formed using the (PP/Ce) multilayers with the same nominal amount of cerium layers. The GO sheets interfere with the polymerization reaction and make its kinetics biphasic. The (GO/Ce) multilayers without PP are brittle and thin.

Highly efficient and excitation tunable two-photon luminescence platform for targeted multi-color MDRB imaging using graphene oxide.

Project description:Multiple drug-resistance bacteria (MDRB) infection is one of the top three threats to human health according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to the large penetration depth and reduced photodamage, two-photon imaging is an highly promising technique for clinical MDRB diagnostics. Since most commercially available water-soluble organic dyes have low two-photon absorption cross-section and rapid photobleaching tendency, their applications in two-photon imaging is highly limited. Driven by the need, in this article we report extremely high two-photon absorption from aptamer conjugated graphene oxide (σ₂PA = 50800 GM) which can be used for highly efficient two-photon fluorescent probe for MDRB imaging. Reported experimental data show that two-photon photoluminescence imaging color, as well as luminescence peak position can be tuned from deep blue to red, just by varying the excitation wavelength without changing its chemical composition and size. We have demonstrated that graphene oxide (GO) based two-photon fluorescence probe is capable of imaging of multiple antibiotics resistance MRSA in the first and second biological transparency windows using 760-1120 nm wavelength range.

Graphene Oxide Membranes for Tunable Ion Sieving in Acidic Radioactive Waste.

Project description:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with unique nanolayer structure have demonstrated excellent separation capability based on their size-selective effect, but there are few reports on achieving ion-ion separation, because it is difficult to inhibit the swelling effect of GO nano sheets as well as to precisely control the interlayer spacing d to a specific value between the sizes of different metal ions. Here, selective separation of uranium from acidic radioactive waste containing multication is achieved through a precise dual-adjustment strategy on d. It is found that GO swelling is greatly restricted in highly acidic solution due to protonation effect. Then the interlayer spacing is further precisely reduced to below the diameter of uranyl ion by increasing the oxidation degree of GO. Sieving uranyl ions from other nuclide ions is successfully realized in pH =3-3 mol L-1 nitric acid solutions.

Tunable Magnetism of Organometallic Nanoclusters by Graphene Oxide On-Surface Chemistry.

Project description:Assembly of interacting molecular spins is an attractive candidate for spintronic and quantum computing devices. Here, we report on-surface chemical assembly of aminoferrocene molecules on a graphene oxide (GO) sheet and their magnetic properties. On the GO surface, organometallic molecules having individual spins through charge transfer between the molecule and the sheet are arranged in nanoclusters having diameters of about 2 nm. The synthetic fine tuning of the reaction time enables to change the interspacing between the nanoclusters, keeping their size intact. Their magnetism changes from paramagnetic behavior to collective one gradually as the interspacing decreases. The creation of collective nature among weakly interacting molecular spins through their nanoscale arrangement on the GO surface opens a new avenue to molecular magnetism.

Tunable Surface Properties of Aluminum Oxide Nanoparticles from Highly Hydrophobic to Highly Hydrophilic.

Project description:The formation of materials with tunable wettability is important for applications ranging from antifouling to waterproofing surfaces. We report the use of various low-cost and nonhazardous hydrocarbon materials to tune the surface properties of aluminum oxide nanoparticles (NPs) from superhydrophilic to superhydrophobic through covalent functionalization. The hydrocarbon surfaces are compared with a fluorinated surface for wettability and surface energy properties. The role of NPs' hydrophobicity on their dynamic interfacial behavior at the oil-water interface and their ability to form stable emulsions is also explored. The spray-coated NPs provide textured surfaces (regardless of functionality), with water contact angles (θ) of 10-150° based on their surface functionality. The superhydrophobic NPs are able to reduce the interfacial tension of various oil-water interfaces by behaving as surfactants.
