Water plasma functionalized CNTs/MnO2 composites for supercapacitors.

ABSTRACT: A water plasma treatment applied to vertically-aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) synthesized by plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition gives rise to surface functionalization and purification of the CNTs, along with an improvement of their electrochemical properties. Additional increase of their charge storage capability is achieved by anodic deposition of manganese dioxide lining the surface of plasma-treated nanotubes. The morphology (nanoflower, layer, or needle-like structure) and oxidation state of manganese oxide depend on the voltage window applied during charge-discharge measurements and are found to be key points for improved efficiency of capacitor devices. MnO2/CNTs nanocomposites exhibit an increase in their specific capacitance from 678?Fg(-1), for untreated CNTs, up to 750?Fg(-1), for water plasma-treated CNTs.

Facile Fabrication of MnO2/Graphene/Ni Foam Composites for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Project description:A novel MnO2/graphene/Ni foam electrode was fabricated via the impregnation and electrochemical deposition technique with Ni foams serving as substrates and graphene serving as a buffer layer for the enhanced conductivity of MnO2. The samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Compared with other methods, our strategy avoids using surfactants and high-temperature treatments. The electrodes exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, high capabilities, and a long cycle life. Various electrochemical properties were systematically studied using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the specific capacitance of the MnO2/graphene/Ni composite prepared at 1 mA cm-2 of electrodeposition could achieve a scan rate of 10 mV s-1 at 292.8 F g-1, which confirmed that the graphene layer could remarkably improve electron transfer at the electrolyte-electrode interface. The capacitance retention was about 90% after 5000 cycles. Additionally, a MnO2/graphene//graphene asymmetric supercapacitor was assembled and it exhibited a high-energy density of 91 Wh kg-1 as well as had an excellent power density of 400 W kg-1 at 1 A g-1. It is speculated that the strong adhesion between the graphene and MnO2 can provide a compact structure to enhance the mechanical stability, which can be applied as a new method for energy storage devices.

MnO2 nanorods intercalating graphene oxide/polyaniline ternary composites for robust high-performance supercapacitors.

Project description:New ternary composites of MnO2 nanorods, polyaniline (PANI) and graphene oxide (GO) have been prepared by a two-step process. The 100 nm-long MnO2 nanorods with a diameter ~20 nm are conformably coated with PANI layers and fastened between GO layers. The MnO2 nanorods incorporated ternary composites electrode exhibits significantly increased specific capacitance than PANI/GO binary composite in supercapacitors. The ternary composite with 70% MnO2 exhibits a highest specific capacitance reaching 512 F/g and outstanding cycling performance, with ~97% capacitance retained over 5000 cycles. The ternary composite approach offers an effective solution to enhance the device performance of metal-oxide based supercapacitors for long cycling applications.

Flexible Perfluoropolyethers-Functionalized CNTs-Based UHMWPE Composites: A Study on Hydrogen Evolution, Conductivity and Thermal Stability.

Project description:Flexible conductive composites based on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) modified by perfluoropolyethers (PFPEs) were produced. The bonding of PFPE chains, added in 1:1 and 2:1 weight ratios, on CNTs influences the dispersion of nanotubes in the UHMWPE matrix due to the non-polar nature of the polymer, facilitating the formation of nanofillers-rich conductive pathways and improving composites' electrical conductivity (two to five orders of magnitude more) in comparison to UHMWPE-based nanocomposites obtained with pristine CNTs. Electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) was used to evaluate the morphological changes during cyclic voltammetry (CV). The decrease of the overpotential for hydrogen oxidation peaks in samples containing PFPE-functionalized CNTs and hydrogen production (approximately -1.0 V vs. SHE) suggests that these samples could find application in fuel cell technology as well as in hydrogen storage devices. Carbon black-containing composites were prepared for comparative study with CNTs containing nanocomposites.

Facile synthesis of NiCo2S4/CNTs nanocomposites for high-performance supercapacitors.

Project description:Herein, porous NiCo2S4/CNTs nanocomposites were synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method followed by the sulphurization process using different sulfide sources. By comparing two different sulfur sources, the samples using thioacetamide as sulfide source delivered more remarkable electrochemical performance with a high specific capacitance of 1765 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and an admirable cycling stability with capacitance retention of 71.7% at a high current density of 10 A g-1 after 5000 cycles in 2 M KOH aqueous electrolyte. Furthermore, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device was successfully fabricated with the NiCo2S4/CNTs electrode as the positive electrode and graphene as the negative electrode. The device provided a maximum energy density of 29.44 W h kg-1 at a power density of 812 W kg-1. Even at a high power density of 8006 W kg-1, the energy density still reaches 16.68 W h kg-1. Moreover, the ASC presents 89.8% specific capacitance retention after 5000 cycles at 5 A g-1. These results reveal its great potential for supercapacitors in electrochemical energy storage field.

Stretchable, weavable coiled carbon nanotube/MnO2/polymer fiber solid-state supercapacitors.

Project description:Fiber and yarn supercapacitors that are elastomerically deformable without performance loss are sought for such applications as power sources for wearable electronics, micro-devices, and implantable medical devices. Previously reported yarn and fiber supercapacitors are expensive to fabricate, difficult to upscale, or non-stretchable, which limits possible use. The elastomeric electrodes of the present solid-state supercapacitors are made by using giant inserted twist to coil a nylon sewing thread that is helically wrapped with a carbon nanotube sheet, and then electrochemically depositing pseudocapacitive MnO2 nanofibers. These solid-state supercapacitors decrease capacitance by less than 15% when reversibly stretched by 150% in the fiber direction, and largely retain capacitance while being cyclically stretched during charge and discharge. The maximum linear and areal capacitances (based on active materials) and areal energy storage and power densities (based on overall supercapacitor dimensions) are high (5.4 mF/cm, 40.9 mF/cm(2), 2.6 ?Wh/cm(2) and 66.9 ?W/cm(2), respectively), despite the engineered superelasticity of the fiber supercapacitor. Retention of supercapacitor performance during large strain (50%) elastic deformation is demonstrated for supercapacitors incorporated into the wristband of a glove.

Facile synthesis of hybrid CNTs/NiCo2S4 composite for high performance supercapacitors.

Project description:In this work, a novel carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/NiCo2S4 composite for high performance supercapacitors was prepared via a simple chemical bath deposition combined with a post-anion exchange reaction. The morphologies and phase structures of the composites were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and low-temperature sorption of nitrogen (BET). The electro-chemical tests revealed that the CNT/NiCo2S4 composite exhibited high electrochemical performance, because the CNTs were used as a conductive network for the NiCo2S4 hexagonal nanoplates. Compared with pure NiCo2S4 and the mechanically mixed CNTs/NiCo2S4 composite, the CNTs/NiCo2S4 composite electrode material exhibited excellent supercapacitive performance, such as a high specific capacitance up to 1537 F/g (discharge current density of 1 A/g) and an outstanding rate capability of 78.1% retention as the discharge current density increased to 100 A/g. It is therefore expected to be a promising alternative material in the area of energy storage.

Solid-state high performance flexible supercapacitors based on polypyrrole-MnO2-carbon fiber hybrid structure.

Project description:A solid-state flexible supercapacitor (SC) based on organic-inorganic composite structure was fabricated through an "in situ growth for conductive wrapping" and an electrode material of polypyrrole (PPy)-MnO2 nanoflakes-carbon fiber (CF) hybrid structure was obtained. The conductive organic material of PPy greatly improved the electrochemical performance of the device. With a high specific capacitance of 69.3?F cm(-3) at a discharge current density of 0.1?A cm(-3) and an energy density of 6.16 × 10(-3)?Wh cm(-3) at a power density of 0.04?W cm(-3), the device can drive a commercial liquid crystal display (LCD) after being charged. The organic-inorganic composite active materials have enormous potential in energy management and the "in situ growth for conductive wrapping" method might be generalized to open up new strategies for designing next-generation energy storage devices.

Three-Dimensional Bi-Continuous Nanoporous Gold/Nickel Foam Supported MnO2 for High Performance Supercapacitors.

Project description:A three-dimensional bi-continuous nanoporous gold (NPG)/nickel foam is developed though the electrodeposition of a gold-tin alloy on Ni foam and subsequent chemical dealloying of tin. The newly-designed 3D metal structure is used to anchor MnO2 nanosheets for high-performance supercapacitors. The formed ternary composite electrodes exhibit significantly-enhanced capacitance performance, rate capability, and excellent cycling stability. A specific capacitance of 442?Fg-1 is achieved at a scan rate of 5?mV?s-1 and a relatively high mass loading of 865??g?cm-2. After 2500 cycles, only a 1% decay is found at a scan rate of 50?mV?s-1. A high power density of 3513?W?kg-1 and an energy density of 25.73?Wh?kg-1 are realized for potential energy storage devices. The results demonstrate that the NPG/nickel foam hybrid structure significantly improves the dispersibility of MnO2 and makes it promising for practical energy storage applications.

Green synthesis of in situ electrodeposited rGO/MnO2 nanocomposite for high energy density supercapacitors.

Project description:This paper presents the preparation of in situ electrodeposited rGO/MnO2 nanocomposite as a binder-free electrode for supercapacitor application. The work describes and evaluates the performance of prepared electrode via green and facile electrodeposition technique of in situ rGO/MnO2-glucose carbon nanocomposites. The carbon content in the composite electrode increased after GO and D (+) glucose solution has been added in the deposition electrolyte. This study found that a suitable concentration of D (+) glucose in the deposition electrolyte can slow down the nucleation process of MnO2 particles and lead to uniform and ultrathin nanoflakes structure. The optimize electrode exhibited low transfer resistance and resulted on excellent electrochemical performance in three electrolyte systems viz. Na2SO4, KOH and KOH/K3Fe(CN)6 redox electrolytes. The optimum energy density and power density were 1851 Whkg(-1) and 68 kWkg(-1) at current density of 20 Ag(-1) in mixed KOH/K3Fe(CN)6 electrolyte.
