Project description:Luminescent organometallic platinum(II) compounds are of interest as phosphors for organic light emitting devices. Their emissive properties can be tuned by variation of the ligands or by specific electron-withdrawing or electron-donating substituents. Different ancillary ligands can have a profound impact on the emission color and emission efficiency of these complexes. We studied the influence of sterically hindered, aryl-substituted ?-diketonates on the emission properties of C^C* cyclometalated complexes, employing the unsubstituted methyl-phenyl-imidazolium ligand. The quantum yield was significantly enhanced by changing the auxiliary ligand from acetylacetonate, where the corresponding platinum(II) complex shows only a very weak emission, to mesityl (mes) or duryl (dur) substituted acetylacetonates. The new complexes show very efficient emission with quantum yields >70% in the sky-blue spectral region (480 nm) and short decay times (<3 ?s).

Project description:The reaction of EuI2(THF)2 with potassium hydro-tris-(3,5-diiso-propyl-pyrazol-yl)borate (K[HB(3,5- iPr2pz)3] (= KTp iPr2, pz = pyrazol-yl) in a molar ratio of 1:1.5 resulted in extensive ligand fragmentation and formation of the europium(II) mono(scorpionate) complex bis-(3,5-diisopropyl-1H-pyrazole)[hydro-tris-(3,5-diiso-propyl-pyrazol-yl)borato]iodido-europium(II), [Eu(C27H46BN6)I(C9H16N2)2] or (Tp iPr2)(3,5- iPr2pzH)2EuIII, 1, in high yield (78%). As a typical by-product, small amounts of the sterically crowded pyraza-bole derivative trans-4,8-bis-(3,5-diiso-propyl-pyrazol-1-yl)-1,3,5,7-tetra-iso-propyl-pyraza-bole, C36H62B2H8 or trans-{(3,5- iPr2pz)HB(μ-3,5- iPr2pz)}2, 2, were formed. Both title compounds have been structurally characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In 1, two isopropyl groups are each disordered over two orientations with occupancy ratios of 0.574 (10):0.426 (10) and 0.719 (16):0.281 (16). In 2, one isopropyl group is similarly disordered, occupancy ratio 0.649 (9):0.351 (9).

Project description:A series of giant tris(heteroaryl)methanes are easily assembled by one-pot three-component synthesis by simple reflux in ethanol without catalyst or additives. Diversely substituted indoles (Ar1) react with quinoline aldehydes, quinolone aldehydes, chromone aldehydes, and fluorene aldehydes (Ar2CHO) and coumarins (Ar3) in 1:1:1 ratio to form the corresponding tris(heteroaryl)methanes (Ar1Ar2Ar3)CH along with (Ar1Ar1Ar2)CH triads. A series of new 2:1 triads were also synthesized by coupling substituted indoles with Ar2CHO. The coupling reactions could also be carried out in water (at circa 80 °C) but with chemoselectivity favoring (Ar1Ar1Ar2)CH over (Ar1Ar2Ar3)CH. The molecular structure of a representative (Ar1Ar2Ar3)CH triad was confirmed by X-ray analysis. Model tris(heteroaryl/aryl)methylium salts were generated by reaction with DDQ/HPF6 and studied by NMR and by DFT and GIAO-DFT.

Project description:Synthesis of the sterically crowded Tris(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) lanthanide complexes, (C5Me5)3Ln, has demonstrated that organometallic complexes with unconventionally long metal ligand bond lengths can be isolated that provide options to develop new types of ligand reactivity based on steric crowding. Previously, the (C5Me5)3M complexes were known only with the larger lanthanides, La-Sm. The synthesis of even more crowded complexes of the smaller metals Gd and Y is reported here. These complexes allow an evaluation of the size/reactivity correlations previously limited to the larger metals and demonstrate a previously undescribed type of C5Me5-based reaction, namely C-H bond activation. (C5Me5)3Gd, was prepared from GdCl3 through (C5Me5)2GdCl2K(THF)2, (C5Me5)2Gd(C3H5), and [(C5Me5)2Gd][BPh4] and structurally characterized by x-ray crystallography. Although Gd3+ is redox-inactive, (C5Me5)3Gd functions as a reducing agent in reactions with 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene (COT) and triphenylphosphine selenide to make (C5Me5)Gd(C8H8), [(C5Me5)2Gd]2Se2, and [(C5Me5)2Gd]2Se depending on the stoichiometry used. When the analogous synthetic method was attempted with yttrium in arene solvents, the previously characterized (C5Me5)2YR complexes (R=C6H5, CH2C6H5) were isolated instead, i.e., C-H bond activation of solvent occurred. To avoid this problem, (C5Me5)3Y was synthesized in high yield from [(C5Me5)2YH]2 and tetramethylfulvene in aliphatic solvents. Isolated (C5Me5)3Y was found to metalate benzene and toluene with concomitant formation of C5Me5H, a reaction contrary to the normal pKa values of these hydrocarbons. In this case, the normally inert (C5Me5)1- ligand engages in C-H bond activation due to the extreme steric crowding.

Project description:Tris(2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl)phosphine, P(o-TMSC6 H4 )3 , was synthesised and characterised in solution and in the solid state. The large steric bulk prevents most reactions of the phosphorus donor and makes the compound air stable both in the solid state as well as in solution. This shielded phosphine can still undergo three reactions, namely protonation, oxidation to the phosphine oxide under harsh conditions and complexation to AuI , thus forming a complex with linear coordination. Unexpectedly, complexation was unsuccessful with a range of other metal cations. Neither PdII , PtII , ZnII nor HgII reacted and even the remaining coinage metal cations CuI and AgI could not be coordinated. Both the parent molecule as well as the reaction products were structurally characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction, and the conformational change of geometry required to accommodate the additional atoms was analysed in detail. Apart from chemical oxidation with H2 O2 , P(o-TMSC6 H4 )3 displays reversible electrochemical oxidation with a potential not unlike the one of sterically unencumbered phosphines for which the oxidation is usually not reversible. P(o-TMSC6 H4 )3 can thus be considered a model compound for the investigation of the electronic properties of sterically unencumbered phosphines.

Project description:Steric character is one of the most fundamental factors to determine the reactivity of the substrate in organic synthesis. In bimolecular reaction, the sterically-bulky group situated close to the reactive center generally prevents the approach of the reaction partner retarding the bond formation. This report describes, to the contrary, significantly enhanced reactivity of 2,6-disubstituted phenyl azides observed in catalyst-free 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition with alkynes, unexpectedly reacting faster than unsubstituted phenyl azide and even more faster than unhindered alkyl azide, despite the steric hindrance adjacent to the reactive azido group. Experimental and computational studies have indicated that the steric hindrance eliciting the inhibition of resonance between azido group and the aromatic ring is the primary cause of this apparently-paradoxical phenomenon. This is the first type of steric acceleration, indicating a possibility of designing a highly reactive functional group by strategically locating it in the sterically-congested environment.

A new methodology for the preparation of chlorocyclopentadienes has been developed which is well adapted for highly sterically hindered compounds and works with either electron rich or poor systems.

Project description:Catalysts that employ late transition-metals, namely Ni and Pd, have been extensively studied for olefin polymerizations, co-polymerizations, and for the synthesis of advanced polymeric structures, such as block co-polymers. Unfortunately, many of these catalysts often exhibit poor thermal stability and/or non-living polymerization behavior that limits their ability to access tailored polymer structures. Due to this, the development of catalysts that display controlled/living behavior at elevated temperatures is vital. In this manuscript, we describe a Ni α-diimine complex that is capable of polymerizing ethylene in a living manner at temperatures as high as 75 °C, which is one of the highest temperatures reported for the living polymerization of ethylene by a late transition metal-based catalyst. Furthermore, we will demonstrate that this catalyst's living behavior is not dependent on the presence of monomer, and that it can be exploited to access polyethylene-based block co-polymers.

Project description:A series of diimine ligands has been designed on the basis of 2-pyridyl-1 H-phenanthro[9,10- d]imidazole (L1, L2). Coupling the basic motif of L1 with anthracene-containing fragments affords the bichromophore compounds L3-L5, of which L4 and L5 adopt a donor-acceptor architecture. The latter allows intramolecular charge transfer with intense absorption bands in the visible spectrum (lowest λabs 464 nm (ε = 1.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) and 490 nm (ε = 5.2 × 104 M-1 cm-1) in CH2Cl2 for L4 and L5, respectively). L1-L5 show strong fluorescence in a fluid medium (Φem = 22-92%, λem 370-602 nm in CH2Cl2); discernible emission solvatochromism is observed for L4 and L5. In addition, the presence of pyridyl (L1-L5) and dimethylaminophenyl (L5) groups enables reversible alteration of their optical properties by means of protonation. Ligands L1-L5 were used to synthesize the corresponding [Re(CO)3X(diimine)] (X = Cl, 1-5; X = CN, 1-CN) complexes. 1 and 2 exhibit unusual dual emission of singlet and triplet parentage, which originate from independently populated 1ππ* and 3MLCT excited states. In contrast to the majority of the reported Re(I) carbonyl luminophores, complexes 3-5 display moderately intense ligand-based fluorescence from an anthracene-containing secondary chromophore and complete quenching of emission from the 3MLCT state presumably due to the triplet-triplet energy transfer (3MLCT → 3ILCT).

Project description:A mild and general protocol for the carbonylative cross-coupling of sterically hindered ortho-disubstituted aryl iodides is reported. Carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura couplings of a variety of aryl boronic acids provide an array of substituted biaryl ketones in modest to excellent yield. A carbonylative Negishi coupling that utilizes alkynyl nucleophiles is also described.
