Project description:Thermal sprayed aluminum coatings are widely scalable to corrosion protection of the offshore steel structure. However, the corrosion rate of the Al coating increases considerably due to the severe marine environment. It has remained a challenge to improve the corrosion resistance and protective ability of Al coatings. The superhydrophobic surface provides a potential way to improve the corrosion resistance of metal materials. Hence, the development of superhydrophobic Al coatings with superior corrosion resistance is of great interest. In this work, the feasibility of the preparation of superhydrophobic Al coatings on a steel substrate was explored. First, Al coatings were prepared onto the steel substrate by the arc-spraying process, followed by ultrasonic etching with 0.1 M NaOH solution, and afterward passivated using 1% fluorosilanes. The effects of the etching time on morphology, contact angle, and corrosion resistance of the Al coatings were evaluated. The schematic model of the fluorosilane passivation process on the Al coating surface was provided. The micro/nanoscale surface structure of the low-surface-energy fluorosilanes promotes the wetting angle of 153.4° and a rolling angle to 6.6°, denoting the superhydrophobic properties. The superhydrophobic Al coating surface displays excellent self-cleaning performance due to its weak adhesion to water droplets. The corrosion current density of the superhydrophobic Al coating (1.36 × 10-8 A cm-2) is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that of the as-sprayed Al coating (1.18 × 10-6 A cm-2). Similarly, the charge-transfer resistance is found to be 12 times larger for the superhydrophobic Al coating and the corresponding corrosion inhibition efficiency reaches 98.9%. The superhydrophobic Al coating displays superior corrosion resistance and promising applications in a marine corrosion environment.

Project description:HypothesisThe superhydrophobic lotus leaf has dual-scale surface structures, that is, nano-bumps on micro-mountains. Large hydrophilic particles, due to its high surface energy and weight, have high affility to substrates and tend to precipitate at the bottom of coating films. Small hydrophobic particles, due to its low surface energy and weight, tends to sit on the top of coating films and form porous structures. To mimic the lotus leaf surface, it may be possible to develop dual-sized particle films, in which small particles are decorated on large particles.ExperimentsA one-step spin coating of a mixture of dual-sized silica particles (55/200 nm) was used. Epoxy resin was added to improve the adhesion of particle films. The single-sized and dual-sized particle films were compared. The mechanical robustness of particle films was tested by tape peeling and droplet impact.FindingsThe novel combination of hydrophobic silica (55 nm) and hydrophilic silica (200 nm) is essential in creating the hierarchical structures. By combining the strong adhesion of hydrophilic silica (bottom of coating film) to polymer substrates and porous structures of hydrophobic silica (top of coating film), we first time report a one-step and versatile approach to create uniform, transparent, robust, and superhydrophobic surface.

Project description:Enhancement in the resilience of superhydrophobic coatings is crucial for their future applicability. However, the progress in this aspect is currently limited due to the lack of a consistent resilience analysis methodology/protocol as well as the limited understanding of the influence of the materials components on the resultant coating performance. This study applies a quantitative analysis methodology involving image analysis and mass tracking and utilizes it to investigate how the properties of coating components can influence coating resilience. The factors examined were changing the molecular weight/tensile strength of poly(vinylchloride)/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PVC/PDMS) polymers and changing the size of the roughening particles. In addition to the examination of resilience data to evaluate degradation patterns, three-dimensional (3D) mapping of the scratches was performed to obtain an insight into how material removal occurs during abrasion. The results can indicate preferential polymer selection (using higher-molecular-weight polymers for PVC) and optimal particle sizes (smaller particles) for maximizing coating resilience. The study, although focused on superhydrophobic materials, demonstrates wide applicability to a range of areas, particularly those focused on the development of high-strength coatings.

Project description:The wide application of superhydrophobic materials is mainly hindered by the poor mechanical robustness and complicated preparation method. To overcome these problems, we tried to make a combination of hierarchical and self-similar structure by the means of a simple spraying method. By adding nanofiller (carbon nanotube) and microfiller (graphite powder and expanded graphite), the hierarchical structure was constructed. By further doping the fillers in the commercial asphalt uniformly, the self-similar structure was prepared. Based on the aforementioned work, the as-prepared sample could withstand the sandpaper abrasion for 12.00 m under 4.90 kPa. Moreover, this superhydrophobic coating demonstrated good conductivity, superior self-cleaning property, and excellent corrosion resistance. The integration of conductivity with the superhydrophobicity might open new avenues for ground grid applications.

Project description:Porous membranes with special wetting properties have attracted great interest due to their various functions and wide applications, including water filtration, selective oil/water separation and oil skimming. Special wetting properties such as superhydrophobicity can be achieved by controlling the surface chemistry as well as the surface topography of a substrate. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is a promising method for the fast and easy generation of various structures. The most common method for 3D printing of superhydrophobic materials is a two-step fabrication process: 3D printing of user-defined topographies, such as surface structures or bulk porosity, followed by a chemical post-processing with low-surface energy chemicals such as fluorinated silanes. Another common method is using a hydrophobic polymer ink to print intricate surface structures. However, the resolution of most common printers is not sufficient to produce nano-/microstructured textures, moreover, the resulting delicate surface micro- or nanostructures are very prone to abrasion. Herein, we report a simple approach for 3D printing of superhydrophobic micro-/nanoporous membranes in a single step, combining the required topography and chemistry. The bulk porosity of this material, which we term "Fluoropor", makes it insensitive to abrasion. To achieve this, a photocurable fluorinated resin is mixed with a porogen mixture and 3D printed using a stereolithography (SLA) printing process. This way, micro-/nanoporous membranes with superhydrophobic properties with static contact angles of 164° are fabricated. The pore size of the membranes can be adjusted from 30 nm to 300 nm by only changing the porogen ratio in the mixture. We show the applicability of the printed membranes for oil/water separation and the formation of Salvinia layers which are of great interest for drag reduction in maritime transportation and fouling prevention.

Project description:Water pollution caused by oil spillages has aroused worldwide attention. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop low-cost, environmentally friendly materials to remove oil contaminants from water. Herein, a "green" superhydrophobic sponge made from marine algae was fabricated by one-step growth of silicone nanofilaments onto a AgNP-decorated alginate sponge via chemical vapor deposition of an azeotrope of (CH3)3SiCl and SiCl4. The reaction of the azeotrope with the alginate sponge was termed "instant", as it took only a few minutes (5 min) at room temperature to achieve superhydrophobicity (152.0°). Such sponges resist high temperatures, UV irradiation, organic solvents, and mechanical abrasion without losing the superhydrophobicity. The sponges absorbed oil droplets within seconds (1.3-7.0 s) with 11.7-17.1 g/g of sorption capacities for oils of different viscous levels (0.56-1775.00 mPa·s). These sponges could retain 90% of the initial oil sorption capacities after 10 consecutive oil sorption/desorption cycles. Benefiting from the superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, the sponges also exhibited high efficiency in oil/water mixture separation. Once the oil/water mixture was injected into the sponge, oil drops were retained in inner pores while water was rejected and spouted from the surface. These excellent performances make the resultant sponge a competitive material for oil spill emergency remediation.

Project description:A superhydrophobic surface with robust structures on a metallic surface could improve its application in various harsh conditions. Herein, we developed a new strategy to fabricate robust micro-/nanoscale hierarchical structures with electrical discharge machining and electrochemical etching on a titanium substrate. After modification by fluorinated silane, the static water contact angle and slide angle of the surface could reach 162 ± 2° and 4 ± 1°, respectively. The superhydrophobic surfaces showed good corrosion resistance and mechanical stability after scratching with sandpapers. In addition, the superhydrophobic surfaces had good self-cleaning performance even in an acidic environment as well as the potential to be used as guiding tracks in droplet microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip systems. These results are expected to be helpful in designing the surface of liquid float gyroscope parts.

Project description:Robust fluorine-free superhydrophobic films were produced from a mixture of two fatty acids (stearic acid and palmitic acid), SiO2 nanoparticles, and polydimethylsiloxane. These simple and nontoxic compounds were deposited via aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition to provide the rough topography required for superhydrophobicity, formed through island growth of the aggregates. The optimum conditions for well-adhered superhydrophobic films produced films with a highly textured morphology, which possessed a water contact angle of 162 ± 2° and a sliding angle of <5°. Superhydrophobicity was maintained after ultraviolet exposure (14 days at 365 nm), heat treatment (5 h at 300 °C and 5 h at 400 °C), 300 tape peel cycles, and exposure to ethanol and toluene (5 h each).

Project description:Surface topography of medical implants provides an important biophysical cue on guiding cellular functions at the cell-implant interface. However, few techniques are available to produce polymeric coatings with controlled microtopographies onto surgical implants, especially onto implant devices of small dimension and with complex structures such as drug-eluting stents. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to develop a new strategy to fabricate polymeric coatings using an electrospraying technique based on the uniqueness of this technique in that it can be used to produce a mist of charged droplets with a precise control of their shape and dimension. We hypothesized that this technique would allow facile manipulation of coating morphology by controlling the shape and dimension of electrosprayed droplets. More specifically, we employed the electrospraying technique to coat a layer of biodegradable polyurethane with tailored microtopographies onto commercial coronary stents. The topography of such stent coatings was modulated by controlling the ratio of round to stretched droplets or the ratio of round to crumped droplets under high electric field before deposition. The shape of electrosprayed droplets was governed by the stability of these charged droplets right after ejection or during their flight in the air. Using the electrospraying technique, we achieved conformal polymeric coatings with tailored microtopographies onto conductive surgical implants. The approach offers potential for controlling the surface topography of surgical implant devices to modulate their integration with surrounding tissues.

Project description:During the metastatic cascade, cancer cells travel through the bloodstream as circulating tumor cells (CTCs) to a secondary site. Clustered CTCs have greater shear stress and treatment resistance, yet their biology remains poorly understood. We therefore engineered a tunable superhydrophobic array device (SHArD). The SHArD-C was applied to culture a clinically relevant model of CTC clusters. Using our device, we cultured a model of cancer cell aggregates of various sizes with immortalized cancer cell lines. These exhibited higher E-cadherin expression and are significantly more capable of surviving high fluid shear stress-related forces compared to single cells and model clusters grown using the control method, helping to explain why clustering may provide a metastatic advantage. Additionally, the SHArD-S, when compared with the AggreWell 800 method, provides a more consistent spheroid-forming device culturing reproducible sizes of spheroids for multiple cancer cell lines. Overall, we designed, fabricated, and validated an easily tunable engineered device which grows physiologically relevant three-dimensional (3D) cancer models containing tens to thousands of cells.
