ABSTRACT: In the title structure, C8H6BrNS, the molecules are planar with the exception of the methyl H atoms. In the crystal, molecules are linked by intermolecular C-H?N interactions to form ribbons parallel to the b axis. Groups of ribbons are arranged in a herringbone pattern to form a layered structure parallel to the ab plane.

The acrylo-nitrile group (C=C-C N) is planar to within 0.003?(2)?Å, with the S atom and the methyl C atom displaced from this plane by 0.2317?(6) and -0.637?(2)?Å, respectively. In the crystal, mol-ecules are linked via pairs of C-H?? inter-actions, forming inversion dimers. There are no other significant inter-molecular inter-actions present.

Project description:The title compound, C6H4BrNS, crystallizes in the space group P21/n with one complete mol-ecule in the asymmetric unit. The non-H atoms are nearly planar (r.m.s for non-H atoms = 0.071 Å), with the nitrile group oriented anti-periplanar with respect to the thio-phene S atom. Inter-molecular Type I centrosymmetric Br⋯Br halogen inter-actions are present at a distance of 3.582 (1) Å and with a C-Br⋯Br angle of 140.7 (1)°. Additional weaker C-H⋯N, C-H⋯S, and S⋯π inter-actions are also present. A Hirshfeld analysis indicates Br⋯Br inter-actions comprise only 1.9% of all the inter-atomic contacts.

Project description:In the title compound, C24H14BrN3S, the dihedral angles between the planes of the pyridine ring and the pendant thio-phene ring, the indole ring system (r.m.s. deviation = 0.022 Å) and the bromo-benzene ring are 9.37 (17), 21.90 (12) and 69.01 (15)°, respectively. The approximate coplanarity of the central ring and the indole ring system is supported by two intra-molecular C-H⋯N inter-actions. In the crystal, inversion dimers linked by pairs of N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds generate R 2 (2)(16) loops and the dimers are linked by C-H⋯π and aromatic π-π stacking [shortest centroid-centroid separation = 3.729 (3) Å] into a three-dimensional network.

The 5-(4-cyano-phen-yl)-3-methyl-2-thienyl groups of adjacent mol-ecules are parallel, leading to zigzag chains of mol-ecules along [101]. The dihedral angles between each thiophene ring and its adjacent cyanobenzene ring are 8.9 (2) and 7.15 (10)°.
