Streptomyces regensis strain WC-3744 was identified as a potential phosphonic acid producer in a large-scale screen of microorganisms for the presence of the pepM gene, which encodes the key phosphonate biosynthetic enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate phosphonomutase.
