Connecting the (quantum) dots: towards hybrid photovoltaic devices based on chalcogenide gels.

ABSTRACT: CdSe(ZnS) core(shell) aerogels were prepared from the assembly of quantum dots into mesoporous colloidal networks. The sol-gel method produces inorganic particle interfaces with low resistance to electrical transport while maintaining quantum-confinement. The photoelectrochemical properties of aerogels and their composites with poly(3-hexylthiophene) are reported for the first time.

Isolating the Escherichia coli transcriptomic responses to superoxide generation and stress from cadmium chalcogenide quantum dots

Project description:In this study we investigate the transcriptomic response of Escherichia coli to CdTe-2.4 and benign CdSe-2.4 quantum dots, each with and without illumination to elucidate the phototherapeutic effect of CdTe-2.4. Our analysis sought to separate the transcriptomic responses of E. coli to the presence of superoxide and the presence of cadmium chalcogenide nanoparticles. We found eight genes to be consistently differentially expressed as a response to superoxide generation, and these genes demonstrate a consistent association with the DNA damage response and deactivation of iron-sulfur clusters, characteristic of a superoxide response. We found eighteen genes associated the presence of cadmium-based quantum dots, in isolation from the superoxide effect. In further analysis of these genes, we performed both amino acid supplementation and gene knockout experiments, identifying the importance of leucyl-tRNA downregulation as a cadmium-based QD response, as well as reinforcing the relationship between CdTe-2.4 stress and iron-sulfur clusters through the gene tusA. This study demonstrates the transcriptomic response of E. coli to CdTe-2.4 and CdSe-2.4 quantum dots and parses the different effects of superoxide versus material effects on the bacteria. Our findings may provide useful information towards the development of quantum dot-based antibacterial therapy in the future.

Dual Role of Graphene Quantum Dots in Active Layer of Inverted Bulk Heterojunction Organic Photovoltaic Devices.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have shown broad application prospects in the field of photovoltaic devices due to their unique quantum confinement and edge effects. Here, we prepared GQDs by a photon-Fenton reaction as reported in our previous work, which has great advantage in the preparation scale. The photoelectric properties of the inverted hybrid solar cells based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):(6,6)-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methylester (PCBM):GQDs and P3HT:GQDs with different contents of GQDs as the active layers are demonstrated, as well as their morphology and structure by atomic force microscopy images. Then, the different roles of GQDs played in the ternary (P3HT:PCBM:GQDs) and binary (P3HT:GQDs) hybrid solar cells are studied systematically. The results indicate that the GQDs provide an efficient excition separation interface and charge transport channel for the improvement of hybrid solar cells. The preliminary exploration and elaboration of the role of GQDs in hybrid solar cells will be beneficial to understand the interfacial procedure and improve device performance in the future.

The dynamic surface chemistry of colloidal metal chalcogenide quantum dots.

Project description:The chemical species (ligands) at the surface of colloidal inorganic semiconductor nanocrystals (QDs) mediate their interactions with the surroundings. The solvation of the QDs reflects a subtle interplay between ligand-solvent and ligand-ligand interactions, which eventually compete with the coordination of the ligands at the QD surface. The QD surface coordination and solvation are indeed fundamental to preserve their optoelectronic properties and to foster the effective application of QD-based inks and nanocomposites. Here we investigate such ligand interactions by exploiting diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY), which is suggested as an essential complement to spectral line width analysis. To this end, we use colloidal metal chalcogenide (CdS, CdSe, and PbS) QDs with (metal-)oleate ligands at their surface in several solvents exhibiting different viscosities and polarities. We demonstrate that the ligand shell is dynamically bound to the metal chalcogenide QDs, and is thus in equilibrium between the QD surface and the surrounding solvent. Such dynamic equilibria depend on ligand-solvent interactions, which are more prominent in aliphatic, rather polar solvents that favor the solvation of the ligands and, as a consequence, their displacement from the QD surface. In addition, the ligand-ligand interactions, which are more relevant for larger QDs, contribute to the stabilization of the ligand bonding at the QD surface.

Engineering a Robust Photovoltaic Device with Quantum Dots and Bacteriorhodopsin.

Project description:We present a route toward a radical improvement in solar cell efficiency using resonant energy transfer and sensitization of semiconductor metal oxides with a light-harvesting quantum dot (QD)/bacteriorhodopsin (bR) layer designed by protein engineering. The specific aims of our approach are (1) controlled engineering of highly ordered bR/QD complexes; (2) replacement of the liquid electrolyte by a thin layer of gold; (3) highly oriented deposition of bR/QD complexes on a gold layer; and (4) use of the Forster resonance energy transfer coupling between bR and QDs to achieve an efficient absorbing layer for dye-sensitized solar cells. This proposed approach is based on the unique optical characteristics of QDs, on the photovoltaic properties of bR, and on state-of-the-art nanobioengineering technologies. It permits spatial and optical coupling together with control of hybrid material components on the bionanoscale. This method paves the way to the development of the solid-state photovoltaic device with the efficiency increased to practical levels.

Green Light-Emitting Devices Based on Perovskite CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> Quantum Dots.

Project description:In this paper, high quality green-emitting CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) are successfully synthesized by hot-injection method. Different injection temperatures are tested to optimize the synthesis conditions. High brightness with the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) up to 90% and narrow size-distribution with the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 18.5 nm are obtained under the optimized conditions. Green light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the CsPbBr3 QDs are successfully demonstrated by combining solution method with vapor deposition method. Composite films of poly[9,9-dioctylfluorene-co- N-[4-(3-methylpropyl)]-diphenylamine] (TFB) and bathocuproine (BCP) layers are chosen as the hole-transporting and the electron-transporting layers, respectively. The highly bright green QD-based light-emitting devices (QLEDs) showing maximum luminance up to 46,000 cd/m2 with a low turn on voltage of 2.3 V, and peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.7%, corresponding to 19.9 cd/A in luminance efficiency. These devices also show high color purity for electroluminescence (EL) with FWHM <20 nm, and no redshift and broadening with increasing voltage as well as a spectral match between PL and EL.

Intermediate-band dynamics of quantum dots solar cell in concentrator photovoltaic modules.

Project description:We report for the first time a successful fabrication and operation of an InAs/GaAs quantum dot based intermediate band solar cell concentrator photovoltaic (QD-IBSC-CPV) module to the IEC62108 standard with recorded power conversion efficiency of 15.3%. Combining the measured experimental results at Underwriters Laboratory (UL®) licensed testing laboratory with theoretical simulations, we confirmed that the operational characteristics of the QD-IBSC-CPV module are a consequence of the carrier dynamics via the intermediate-band at room temperature.

Spectroscopic Evidence for the Contribution of Holes to the Bleach of Cd-Chalcogenide Quantum Dots.

Project description:In transient absorption (TA) measurements on Cd-chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs), the presence of a band-edge (BE) bleach signal is commonly attributed entirely to conduction-band electrons in the 1S(e) state, neglecting contributions from BE holes. While this has been the accepted view for more than 20 years, and has often been used to distinguish electron and hole kinetics, the reason for the absence of a hole contribution to the BE-bleach has remained unclear. Here, we show with three independent experiments that holes do in fact have a significant impact on the BE-bleach of well-passivated Cd-chalcogenide QD samples. Transient absorption experiments on high photoluminescence quantum yield CdSe/CdS/ZnS core-shell-shell QDs clearly show an increase of the band-edge bleach as holes cool down to the band edge. The relative contribution of electron-to-hole bleach is 2:1, as predicted by theory. The same measurements on core-only CdSe QDs with a lower quantum yield do not show a contribution of holes to the band-edge bleach. We assign the lack of hole bleach to the presence of ultrafast hole trapping in samples with insufficient passivation of the QD surface. In addition, we show measurements of optical gain in core-shell-shell QD solutions, providing clear evidence of a significant hole contribution to the BE transient absorption signal. Finally, we present spectroelectrochemical measurements on CdTe QDs films, showing the presence of a BE-bleach for both electron and hole injections. The presence of a contribution of holes to the bleach in passivated Cd-chalcogenides QDs bears important implications for quantitative studies on optical gain as well as for TA determinations of carrier dynamics.

Black phosphorus quantum dots in inorganic perovskite thin films for efficient photovoltaic application.

Project description:Black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) are proposed as effective seed-like sites to modulate the nucleation and growth of CsPbI2Br perovskite crystalline thin layers, allowing an enhanced crystallization and remarkable morphological improvement. We reveal that the lone-pair electrons of BPQDs can induce strong binding between molecules of the CsPbI2Br precursor solution and phosphorus atoms stemming from the concomitant reduction in coulombic repulsion. The four-phase transition during the annealing process yields an α-phase CsPbI2Br stabilized by BPQDs. The BPQDS/CsPbI2Br core-shell structure concomitantly reinforces a stable CsPbI2Br crystallite and suppresses the oxidation of BPQDs. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency of 15.47% can be achieved for 0.7 wt % BPQDs embedded in CsPbI2Br film-based devices, with an enhanced cell stability, under ambient conditions. Our finding is a decisive step in the exploration of crystallization and phase stability that can lead to the realization of efficient and stable inorganic perovskite solar cells.
