Genetic Characterization of a Natural Reassortant H3N8 Avian Influenza Virus Isolated from Domestic Geese in Guangxi, Southern China.

ABSTRACT: A H3N8 subtype of avian influenza virus, A/goose/Guangxi/020G/2009(H3N8) (GX020G), was isolated from the Guangxi Province of China in 2009. All eight gene segments of the GX020G strain were sequenced. Sequence analysis indicated that this H3N8 virus is a novel reassortant strain. The genome sequences provide useful information for understanding the epidemiology and molecular characteristics of the H3N8 subtype of influenza virus in southern China.

Project description:We report here the complete genome sequence of a novel reassortant H4N2 avian influenza virus strain, A/duck/Guangxi/125D17/2012(H4N2) (GX125D17), isolated from a duck in Guangxi Province, China in 2012. We obtained the complete genome sequence of the GX125D17 virus isolation by PCR, cloning, and sequencing. Sequence analysis revealed that this H4N2 virus strain was a novel reassortant avian in?uenza virus (AIV). Information about the complete genome sequence of the GX125D17 virus strain will be useful for epidemiological studies.

Avian Influenza Virus with Hemagglutinin-Neuraminidase Combination H3N6, Isolated from a Domestic Pigeon in Guangxi, Southern China.

Project description:The H3 subtype of avian influenza virus can provide genes for human influenza virus through gene reassortment, which has raised great concerns about its potential threat to human health. An H3N6 subtype of avian influenza virus was isolated from Guangxi Province, China, in 2009. All eight gene segments of the strain were sequenced. The sequence analysis indicated that this H3N6 virus was a nature reassortant virus. The genome sequences now can be used to understand the epidemiological and molecular characteristics of the H3N6 influenza virus in southern China.

Project description:Here, we report the detection of a reassortant avian influenza A(H3N8) virus isolated from a wild bird in Poyang Lake, Jiangxi, China, in 2014. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that this virus is most likely derived from the Eurasian-origin H3Ny and HxN8 viruses and two strains endemic to China, namely, H5N1 and H5N6.

Full Genome Sequence of a Natural Reassortant H9N2 Avian Influenza Virus Isolated from Domestic Ducks in Jiangsu Province, China.

Project description:In this study, the complete genomic sequence of a novel reassortant H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) from domestic ducks in eastern China was reported. Phylogenetic analysis showed that seven of the eight genes were all highly homologous to the chicken-origin H9N2 viruses, whereas the PB2 gene was homologous to the human-origin H1N1 virus, which suggested that domestic ducks might play a key role in the genetic reassortment and evolution of H9N2 AIVs in eastern China.

Characterization of the Whole-Genome Sequence of an H3N6 Avian Influenza Virus, Isolated from a Domestic Duck in Guangxi, Southern China.

Project description:A field strain of H3N6 avian influenza virus (AIV), A/duck/Guangxi/175D12/2014(H3N6), was isolated from a native duck in Guangxi Province, southern China, in 2014. All of the eight AIV gene segments were sequenced, and sequence results revealed that there were 11 amino acid deletions at the NA stalk region. The NA, PB2, and NP genes showed highest homology to H5N6 AIV, and the PA gene showed highest homology to H7N2 AIV. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the eight AIV gene segments belonged to the Eurasian lineage. These findings provide scientific evidence of possible or potential mutations of H3N6 AIV circulating in waterfowl in southern China.

Project description:H3 subtype avian influenza virus (AIV) poses a great threat to public health, and so investigating its epidemiology is of great importance. A novel reassortant H3N2 AIV strain was isolated from a live poultry market in eastern China. The strain's genes originated from H1N1, H3, and H7 AIVs. Thus, the genome information of the H3N2 isolate will help to investigate further the epidemiology of H3 subtype AIVs in China.

Genome Sequence of a Reassortant H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus Isolated from Domestic Green-Winged Teal.

Project description:An avian influenza virus strain, A/domestic green-winged teal/Hunan/3450/2006(H5N1) (DGW-T3450), was isolated from domestic green-winged teals. Genome analysis demonstrated that DGW-T3450 is a novel reassortant strain. The hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes of this strain originated from H5N1 viruses circulating in poultry, while its remaining genes are derived from multiple ancestors, including viruses like those that infect wild birds.

Genetic characterization of highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5N8) virus isolated from domestic geese in Iraq, 2018.

Project description:BackgroundInfluenza viruses are a continuous threat to avian and mammalian species, causing epidemics and pandemics. After the circulation of H5N1 in 2006, 2015, and 2016 in Iraq, an H5N8 influenza virus emerged in domestic geese in Sulaymaniyah Province, Iraq. This study analyzed the genetic characteristics of the Iraqi H5N8 viruses.ResultsAn HPAI virus subtype H5N8 was identified from domestic backyard geese in the Kurdistan Region, north Iraq. Phylogenic analyses of the hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) genes indicated that Iraq H5N8 viruses belonged to clade 2.3.4.4 group B and clustered with isolates from Iran, Israel, and Belgium. Genetic analysis of the HA gene indicated molecular markers for avian-type receptors. Characterization of the NA gene showed that the virus had sensitive molecular markers for antiviral drugs.ConclusionsThis is the first study ever on H5N8 in Iraq, and it is crucial to understand the epidemiology of the viruses in Iraq and the Middle East. The results suggest a possible role of migratory birds in the introduction of HPAI subtype H5N8 into Iraq.

Genome sequence of a natural reassortant H5N2 avian influenza virus from domestic mallard ducks in eastern China.

Project description:Here, we report the genomic sequence of a Chinese reassortant H5N2 avian influenza virus which possessed the polybasic motif PLREKRRK-R/GL at the hemagglutinin cleavage site. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all eight genes were of the Eurasian lineage, five of which were highly homologous to the endemic clade 2.3.4 H5N1 viruses and their H5N5 reassortant descendants. These data suggested that novel multisubtypic NA reassortants bearing the H5N1 backbone could be generated through genetic reassortment in H5N1 circulating regions, which will help in understanding the evolution and segment reassortment mechanism of H5 subtype avian influenza viruses.
