Randomness in highly reflective silver nanoparticles and their localized optical fields.

ABSTRACT: Reflection of near-infrared light is important for preventing heat transfer in energy saving applications. A large-area, mass-producible reflector that contains randomly distributed disk-shaped silver nanoparticles and that exhibits high reflection at near-infrared wavelengths was demonstrated. Although resonant coupling between incident light and the nanostructure of the reflector plays some role, what is more important is the geometrical randomness of the nanoparticles, which serves as the origin of a particle-dependent localization and hierarchical distribution of optical near-fields in the vicinity of the nanostructure. Here we show and clarified the unique optical near-field processes associated with the randomness seen in experimentally fabricated silver nanostructures by adapting a rigorous theory of optical near-fields based on an angular spectrum and detailed electromagnetic calculations.

Optimization and application of reflective LSPR optical fiber biosensors based on silver nanoparticles.

Project description:In this study, we developed a reflective localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) optical fiber sensor, based on silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). To enhance the sensitivity of the LSPR optical sensor, two key parameters were optimized, the length of the sensing area and the coating time of the Ag NPs. A sensing length of 1.5 cm and a 1-h coating time proved to be suitable conditions to produce highly sensitive sensors for biosensing. The optimized sensor has a high refractive index sensitivity of 387 nm/RIU, which is much higher than that of other reported individual silver nanoparticles in solutions. Moreover, the sensor was further modified with antigen to act as a biosensor. Distinctive wavelength shifts were found after each surface modification step. In addition, the reflective LSPR optical fiber sensor has high reproducibility and stability.

Generating highly reflective and conductive metal layers through a light-assisted synthesis and assembling of silver nanoparticles in a polymer matrix.

Project description:The development of metalized surfaces exhibiting mirror properties and/or electric conductivity without heavy equipments and with low metal charge is a big challenge in view of many industrial applications. We report herein on the photo-assembling of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in a polymer matrix, carried out within minutes from an acrylate monomer and silver nitrate at room temperature, under air and without any solvents. The top surface of the material gets converted into a continuous silver thin film and a depthwise concentration gradient of AgNPs is created in the polymer, which images the absorption profile of the actinic UV light in the reactive formulation. This specific assembling of the silver@polymer coating induces excellent reflective and conductive properties. The conductance was observed to strongly increase with increasing the exposure from 3 to 30?min due to the formation of a more and more compact metal film. This coating strategy works with a variety of substrates (textile, paper, glass, wood, plastic and stainless steel). Moreover, on flexible surfaces such as textile, the flexibility was preserved. The possibility to use this kind of nanomaterial as a printing ink, with a much lower metal concentration (3 to 5 wt.%) than concurrent inks, was also demonstrated.

Colorimetric Detection Based on Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Optical Characteristics for Sensing of Mercury Using Green-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles.

Project description:Development of selective colorimetric detectors that can use green-fabricated silver nanoparticles' (AgNPs) with localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) to rapidly, simply, and selectively detect Hg(II) ions was undertaken in this study. Onion extract was used for synthesising photo-induced green crystalline silver nanoparticles (NPs). The formation of nanoparticles is enhanced when ultrasound irradiation is present; bioligands could serve as stabilizing and reducing agents. Different methods of measurement, including UV-Vis, TEM, SEM/EDAX, FT - IR, and XRD, are effective for characterization of nanoparticles. The spherical nature of green-fabricated AgNPs is confirmed by TEM. High-density, spherical, and uniformly formed silver nanoparticle shapes were found in silver nanoparticle SEM images. The arrangement of AgNPs in the form of face-centered cubic structures was confirmed by XRD patterns. The formation of impurity-free AgNPs was confirmed using the EDAX analysis results. Hg2+ with excellent sensitivity was sensitively and selectively detected by employing green-synthesized silver nanoparticles. The reduction of Ag (1) to Ag (0) was confirmed by a slight increase in Hg (II) concentration and progressive reduction of green-synthesized AgNPs, whose absorbance changed abruptly. The reduction of LSPRs by the phosphate buffer medium enables AgNPs to sensitively and selectively detect Hg2+ ions by providing good environment. Besides, a selective, sensitive, simple, and rapid method that is proposed for detecting Hg (II) ions in samples of water is presented in the study. Harmful mercury ions in real samples of water (tap and ground water) can colorimetrically and selectively be detected using the?AgNPs. The results showed an RSD of below 6% and over 92% of good recovery.

Plasmonics of Diffused Silver Nanoparticles in Silver/Nitride Optical Thin Films.

Project description:Metal-dielectric multilayers are versatile optical devices that can be designed to combine the visible transmittance of dielectrics with the electronic properties of metals for plasmonic and meta-material applications. However, their performances are limited by an interfacial optical absorption often attributed entirely to the metal surface roughness. Here, we show that during deposition of AlN/Ag/AlN and SiNx/Ag/SiNx multilayers, significant diffusion of Ag into the top dielectric layer form Ag nanoparticles which excite localized surface plasmon resonances that are primarily responsible for the interfacial optical absorption. Based on experimental depth profiles, we model the multilayer's silver concentration profile as two complementary error functions: one for the diffused Ag nanoparticles and one for the interface roughness. We apply the Maxwell-Garnett and Bruggeman effective medium theories to determine that diffusion characteristics dominate the experimental absorption spectra. The newfound metal nanoparticle diffusion phenomenon effectively creates a hybrid structure characteristic of both metal-dielectric multilayer and metal-dielectric composite.

Tuning Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Wavelengths of Silver Nanoparticles by Mechanical Deformation.

Project description:We describe a simple technique to alter the shape of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by rolling a glass tube over them to mechanically compress them. The resulting shape change in turn induces a red-shift in the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) scattering spectrum and exposes new surface area. The flattened particles were characterized by optical and electron microscopy, single nanoparticle scattering spectroscopy, and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). AFM and SEM images show that the AgNPs deform into discs; increasing the applied load from 0 to 100 N increases the AgNP diameter and decreases the height. This deformation caused a dramatic red shift in the nanoparticle scattering spectrum and also generated new surface area to which thiolated molecules could attach as evident from SERS measurements. The simple technique employed here requires no lithographic templates and has potential for rapid, reproducible, inexpensive and scalable tuning of nanoparticle shape, surface area, and resonance while preserving particle volume.

Texturing Silicon Nanowires for Highly Localized Optical Modulation of Cellular Dynamics.

Project description:Engineered silicon-based materials can display photoelectric and photothermal responses under light illumination, which may lead to further innovations at the silicon-biology interfaces. Silicon nanowires have small radial dimensions, promising as highly localized cellular modulators, however the single crystalline form typically has limited photothermal efficacy due to the poor light absorption and fast heat dissipation. In this work, we report strategies to improve the photothermal response from silicon nanowires by introducing nanoscale textures on the surface and in the bulk. We next demonstrate high-resolution extracellular modulation of calcium dynamics in a number of mammalian cells including glial cells, neurons, and cancer cells. The new materials may be broadly used in probing and modulating electrical and chemical signals at the subcellular length scale, which is currently a challenge in the field of electrophysiology or cellular engineering.

Nanocellulose-Assisted Thermally Induced Growth of Silver Nanoparticles for Optical Applications.

Project description:Optically responsive materials are present in everyday life, from screens to sensors. However, fabricating large-area, fossil-free materials for functional biocompatible applications is still a challenge today. Nanocelluloses from various sources, such as wood, can provide biocompatibility and are emerging candidates for templating organic optoelectronics. Silver (Ag) in its nanoscale form shows excellent optical properties. Herein, we combine both materials using thin-film large-area spray-coating to study the fabrication of optical response applications. We characterize the Ag nanoparticle formation by X-ray scattering and UV-vis spectroscopy in situ during growth on the nanocellulose template. The morphology and optical properties of the nanocellulose film are compared to the rigid reference surface SiO2. Our results clearly show the potential to tailor the energy band gap of the resulting hybrid material.

Physical implementation of oblivious transfer using optical correlated randomness.

Project description:We demonstrate physical implementation of information-theoretic secure oblivious transfer based on bounded observability using optical correlated randomness in semiconductor lasers driven by common random light broadcast over optical fibers. We demonstrate that the scheme can achieve one-out-of-two oblivious transfer with effective key generation rate of 110 kb/s. The results show that this scheme is a promising approach to achieve information-theoretic secure oblivious transfer over long distances for future applications of secure computation such as privacy-preserving database mining, auctions and electronic-voting.

Correlation and Characterization of 3D Morphological Dependent Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance Spectra of Single Silver Nanoparticles Using Dark-field Optical Microscopy and Spectroscopy and AFM.

Project description:We have developed a new and effective methodology to correlate optical and AFM images of single Ag nanoparticles (NPs), allowing us to study 3D-morphological dependent localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) spectra of individual Ag NPs. We fabricated arrays of distinctive microwindows on glass coverslips using photo-lithography method, and created well-isolated individual Ag NPs with a wide variety of shapes and morphologies on the glass coverslips using a modified nanosphere lithography method (NSL). Using distinctive geometries of microwindows, we located individual Ag NPs of interest in their optical and AFM images, enabling us to correlate and characterize the LSPR spectra and 3D morphologies of the same single NPs using dark-field optical microscopy and spectroscopy (DFOMS) and AFM, respectively. We found that LSPR spectra of single Ag NPs, with nearly equal volume [(8.6 ± 0.4) × 10(3) nm(3)], cross-section [(2.2 ± 0.2) × 10(2) nm(3)], and height (39.6 ± 3.6 nm), highly depend on their shapes, showing the red shift of peak wavelength to 629 nm (quasi trapezoidal cylindrical NP) from that of 506 nm (quasi circular cylindrical NP). LSPR spectra of single Ag NPs simulated using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) agree well with those measured experimentally when their shapes and morphologies can be accuractely described in both methods, but differ when they are not. Furthermore, we found location-dependent LSPR spectra on and around a single NP, offering a unique opportunity to characterize multi-mode plasmonic NPs at nanometer resolution for better understanding their plasmonic optical properties and for rational design of single NP optics.
