Project description:This work showcases the performance of [NiFeSe] hydrogenase from Desulfomicrobium baculatum for solar-driven hydrogen generation in a variety of organic-based deep eutectic solvents. Despite its well-known sensitivity towards air and organic solvents, the hydrogenase shows remarkable performance under an aerobic atmosphere in these solvents when paired with a TiO2 photocatalyst. Tuning the water content further increases hydrogen evolution activity to a TOF of 60±3 s-1 and quantum yield to 2.3±0.4 % under aerobic conditions, compared to a TOF of 4 s-1 in a purely aqueous solvent. Contrary to common belief, this work therefore demonstrates that placing natural hydrogenases into non-natural environments can enhance their intrinsic activity beyond their natural performance, paving the way for full water splitting using hydrogenases.

Project description:The design of a biomimetic and fully base metal photocatalytic system for photocatalytic proton reduction in a homogeneous medium is described. A synthetic pyridylphosphole-appended [FeFe] hydrogenase mimic was encapsulated inside a supramolecular zinc porphyrin-based metal-organic cage structure Fe4 (Zn-L)6 . The binding is driven by the selective pyridine-zinc porphyrin interaction and results in the catalyst being bound strongly inside the hydrophobic cavity of the cage. Excitation of the capsule-forming porphyrin ligands with visible light while probing the IR spectrum confirmed that electron transfer takes place from the excited porphyrin cage to the catalyst residing inside the capsule. Light-driven proton reduction was achieved by irradiation of an acidic solution of the caged catalyst with visible light.

Project description:Inspired by the active center of the natural [FeFe] hydrogenases, we designed a compact and precious metal-free photosensitizer-catalyst dyad (PS-CAT) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. PS-CAT represents a prototype dyad comprising π-conjugated oligothiophenes as light absorbers. PS-CAT and its interaction with the sacrificial donor 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenylbenzimidazoline were studied by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy coupled with electrochemical techniques and visible light-driven photocatalytic investigations. Operando EPR spectroscopy revealed the formation of an active [FeI Fe0 ] species-in accordance with theoretical calculations-presumably driving photocatalysis effectively (TON≈210).

Project description:Artificial photosynthesis-the direct photochemical generation of hydrogen from water-is a promising but scientifically challenging future technology. Because nature employs membranes for photodriven reactions, the aim of this work is to elucidate the effect of membranes on artificial photocatalysis. To do so, a combination of electrochemistry, photocatalysis, and time-resolved spectroscopy on vesicle-embedded [FeFe]hydrogenase mimics, driven by a ruthenium tris-2,2'-bipyridine photosensitizer, is reported. The membrane effects encountered can be summarized as follows: the presence of vesicles steers the reactivity of the [FeFe]-benzodithiolate catalyst towards disproportionation, instead of protonation, due to membrane characteristics, such as providing a constant local effective pH, and concentrating and organizing species inside the membrane. The maximum turnover number is limited by photodegradation of the resting state in the catalytic cycle. Understanding these fundamental productive and destructive pathways in complex photochemical systems allows progress towards the development of efficient artificial leaves.

Project description:The Pt-free photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) has been the focus in the photocatalysis field. Here, the ZnO-dotted porous ZnS cluster microsphere (PCMS) is designed for high efficient, Pt-free PHE. The PCMS is designed through an easy "controlling competitive reaction" strategy by selecting the thiourea as S(2-) source and Zn(Ac)₂·2H₂O as Zn source in ethylene glycol medium. Under suitable conditions, one of the PCMS, named PCMS-1, with high SBET specific area of 194 m(2)g(-1), microsphere size of 100 nm and grain size of 3 nm can be obtained. The formation of PCMS is verified by TEM, XAES, XPS, Raman and IR methods. Importantly, a series of the experiments and theoretical calculation demonstrate that the dotting of ZnO not only makes the photo-generated electrons/hole separate efficiently, but also results in the formation of the active catalytic sites for PHE. As a result, the PCMS-1 shows the promising activity up to 367 μmol h(-1) under Pt-free condition. The PHE activity has no obvious change after addition 1 wt.% Pt, implying the presence of active catalytic sites for hydrogen evolution in the PCMS-1. The easy synthesis process, low preparation cost of the PCMS makes their large potential for Pt-free PHE.

Project description:Steady-state irradiation under visible light of a covalent Ir(III)-photosensitized polyoxotungstate is reported. In the presence of a sacrificial electron donor, the photolysis leads to the very efficient photoreduction of the polyoxometalate. Successive formation of the one-electron and two-electron reduced species, which are unambiguously identified by comparison with spectroelectrochemical measurements, is observed with a significantly faster rate reaction for the formation of the one-electron reduced species. The kinetics of the photoreduction, which are correlated to the reduction potentials of the polyoxometalate (POM), can be finely tuned by the presence of an acid. Indeed light-driven formation of the two-electron reduced POM is considerably facilitated in the presence of acetic acid. The system is also able to perform photocatalytic hydrogen production under visible light without significant loss of performance over more than 1 week of continuous photolysis and displays higher photocatalytic efficiency than the related multi-component system, outlining the decisive effect of the covalent bonding between the POM and the photosensitizer. This functional and modular system constitutes a promising step for the development of charge photoaccumulation devices and subsequent photoelectrocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis.

Project description:Photosynthesis is a process wherein the chromophores in plants and bacteria absorb light and convert it into chemical energy. To mimic this process, an emissive poly(ethylene glycol)-decorated tetragonal prismatic platinum(II) cage was prepared and used as the donor molecule to construct a light-harvesting system in water. Eosin?Y was chosen as the acceptor because of its good spectral overlap with that of the metallacage, which is essential for the preparation of light-harvesting systems. Such a combination showed enhanced catalytic activity in catalyzing the cross-coupling hydrogen evolution reaction, as compared with eosin?Y alone. This study offers a pathway for using the output energy from the light-harvesting system to mimic the whole photosynthetic process.

Project description:Photocatalysts formed from a single organic semiconductor typically suffer from inefficient intrinsic charge generation, which leads to low photocatalytic activities. We demonstrate that incorporating a heterojunction between a donor polymer (PTB7-Th) and non-fullerene acceptor (EH-IDTBR) in organic nanoparticles (NPs) can result in hydrogen evolution photocatalysts with greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity. Control of the nanomorphology of these NPs was achieved by varying the stabilizing surfactant employed during NP fabrication, converting it from a core-shell structure to an intermixed donor/acceptor blend and increasing H2 evolution by an order of magnitude. The resulting photocatalysts display an unprecedentedly high H2 evolution rate of over 60,000?µmol?h-1?g-1 under 350 to 800?nm illumination, and external quantum efficiencies over 6% in the region of maximum solar photon flux.

Project description:Various amounts of Rh-doped titanate nanosheets (Ti3NS:Rh(x), where x is doped amount) were prepared to develop a new nanostructured photocatalyst based on metal oxide compounds that can split water to produce H2 under sunlight. Ti3NS:Rh(x) was obtained by acid exchange, intercalation, and exfoliation of Rh-doped layered sodium titanate compound (Na2Ti3-x Rh x O7). A new energy gap was found in the diffuse reflection spectrum of the Ti3NS:Rh(x) colloidal suspension solution; this new energy gap corresponds to electrons in the 4d level of Rh3+ or Rh4+, which are doped in the Ti4+ site. A photocatalyst activity of Ti3NS:Rh(x) for H2 evolution in water with triethylamine (TEA) as an electron donor was investigated. The appropriate amount of Rh doping can improve the photocatalytic activity of Ti3NS for H2 evolution from water using triethylamine (TEA) as a sacrifice agent. The reason was related to the rich state of Rh3+ or Rh4+ doped in the Ti4+ site of Ti3NS. Doping Rh 1 mol % of Ti, Ti3NS:Rh(0.03) shows the H2 evolution rates up to 1040 nmol/h, which is about 25 times larger than that of nondoped Ti3NS under UV irradiation (>220 nm) and 302 nmol/h under near-UV irradiation (>340 nm). These results show that the development of new nanostructured photocatalyst based on Rh-doped titanate compounds that can produce H2 under near-UV irradiation present in sunlight was a success.

Project description:Solar-light-driven H2 production in water with a [NiFeSe]-hydrogenase (H2ase) and a bioinspired synthetic nickel catalyst (NiP) in combination with a heptazine carbon nitride polymer, melon (CN(x)), is reported. The semibiological and purely synthetic systems show catalytic activity during solar light irradiation with turnover numbers (TONs) of more than 50,000?mol?H2(mol?H2ase)(-1) and approximately 155?mol?H2?(mol?NiP)(-1) in redox-mediator-free aqueous solution at pH?6 and 4.5, respectively. Both systems maintained a reduced photoactivity under UV-free solar light irradiation (?>420?nm).
