A novel pH sensitive, colorimetric ionic liquid nanosensor based on phosphonium salts of fluorescein is reported. Herein, fluorescein salts of various stoichiometries were synthesized by use of a trihexyltetradecylphosphonium cation [TTP]<sup>+</sup> in combination with dianionic [FL]<sup>2-</sup> and monoanionic [FL]<sup>-</sup> fluorescein.
