A bis(amido) ligand set that supports two-coordinate chromium in the +1, +2, and +3 oxidation states.

ABSTRACT: The amido ligand -N(Si(i)Pr3)DIPP (DIPP = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) has been used to prepare two-coordinate complexes of Cr(I), Cr(II), and Cr(III). The two-coordinate Cr(II) complex has also been used to prepare a three-coordinate Cr(III) iodide complex, which can be used to access a stable Cr(III) methyl species.

A Genuine Stannylone with a Monoatomic Two-Coordinate Tin(0) Atom Supported by a Bis(silylene) Ligand.

Project description:The monoatomic zero-valent tin complex (stannylone) {[SiII (Xant)SiII ]Sn0 } 5 stabilized by a bis(silylene)xanthene ligand, [SiII (Xant)SiII =PhC(NtBu)2 Si(Xant)Si(NtBu)2 CPh], and its bis-tetracarbonyliron complex {[SiII (Xant)SiII ]Sn0 [Fe(CO)4 ]2 } 4 are reported. The stannylone 5 bearing a two-coordinate zero-valent tin atom is synthesized by reduction of the precursor 4 with potassium graphite. Compound 4 results from the SnII halide precursor {[SiII (Xant)SiII ]SnII Cl}Cl 2 or {[SiII (Xant)SiII ]SnBr2 } 3 through reductive salt-metathesis reaction with K2 Fe(CO)4 . According to density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and HOMO-1 of 5 correspond to a π-type lone pair with delocalization into both adjacent vacant orbitals of the SiII atoms and a σ-type lone pair at the Sn0 center, respectively, indicating genuine stannylone character.

Carbon-carbon cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by a two-coordinate nickel(II)-bis(amido) complex via observable Ni(I) , Ni(II) , and Ni(III) intermediates.

Project description:Recently, the development of more sustainable catalytic systems based on abundant first-row metals, especially nickel, for cross-coupling reactions has attracted significant interest. One of the key intermediates invoked in these reactions is a Ni(III) -alkyl species, but no such species that is part of a competent catalytic cycle has yet been isolated. Herein, we report a carbon-carbon cross-coupling system based on a two-coordinate Ni(II) -bis(amido) complex in which a Ni(III) -alkyl species can be isolated and fully characterized. This study details compelling experimental evidence of the role played by this Ni(III) -alkyl species as well as those of other key Ni(I) and Ni(II) intermediates. The catalytic cycle described herein is also one of the first examples of a two-coordinate complex that competently catalyzes an organic transformation, potentially leading to a new class of catalysts based on the unique ability of first-row transition metals to accommodate two-coordinate complexes.

Project description:In the title compound, [Zr(C(12)H(18)N)(2)(C(4)H(10)N)(2)(C(4)H(11)N)] or [Zr(HNC(6)H(3) (i)Pr(2))(2)(NEt(2))(2)(HNEt(2))], which was obtained by the reaction of Zr(NEt)(4) with (i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)NH(2), the Zr(IV) atom is in a trigonal-bipiramidal geometry in which the N atoms from two (i)Pr(2)C(6)H(3)NH and one NEt(2) ligand occupy the equatorial positions, and the N atoms of an NEt(2) and an Et(2)NH ligand occupy the apical positions. An intra-molecular N-H⋯N contact occurs. There are two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit.

A Molecular Low-Coordinate [Fe-S-Fe] Unit in Three Oxidation States.

Project description:A [Fe-S-Fe] subunit with a single sulfide bridging two low-coordinate iron ions is the supposed active site of the iron-molybdenum co-factor (FeMoco) of nitrogenase. Here we report a dinuclear monosulfido bridged diiron(II) complex with a similar complex geometry that can be oxidized stepwise to diiron(II/III) and diiron(III/III) complexes while retaining the [Fe-S-Fe] core. The series of complexes has been characterized crystallographically, and electronic structures have been studied using, inter alia, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry. Further, cleavage of the [Fe-S-Fe] unit by CS2 is presented.

Three-coordinate copper(I) amido and aminyl radical complexes.

Project description:A three-coordinate Cu-NR(2) system (R = p-tolyl) supported by the anionic bis(phosphino)borate ligand [Ph(2)B(CH(2)P(t)Bu(2))(2)](-) has been isolated and structurally characterized in both its anionic Cu(I) and neutral (formally) Cu(II) oxidation states. A large rate constant for the self-exchange electron-transfer reaction (k(S) >or= 10(7) M(-1) s(-1)) makes this system a functional model for the type-1 active sites in blue copper proteins. Multiedge X-ray absorption spectroscopy, multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance, and density functional theory analyses collectively indicate that the oxidized form is best regarded as a Cu(I)-aminyl radical complex rather than a Cu(II)-amido species, with about 70% localization of the unpaired electron on the NR(2) unit. Hydrogen-atom transfer and C-C coupling reactions are presented as examples of chemical reactivity manifested by this unusual electronic structure.

Project description:Combining a bulky bis(amide) and a reactive one-coordinate TMP (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidide) ligand, a new mixed K/Zn heteroleptic base has been developed for regioselective zincation of fluoroarenes. This special ligand set allows for trapping and structural authentication of the first intermediates of direct Zn-H exchange of fluoroarenes obtained via deprotonative metallation, providing mechanistic insights of the processes involved.

Project description:AbstractThe new PSP pincer ligand 4,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)dibenzothiophene (PSPPh) was prepared in 89 % yield. With this ligand, a solvothermal synthesis of a Cr complex of the type [Cr(κ3P,S,P-PSP)(CO)3] is described. The X-ray structure of this compound is presented. We demonstrate that the solvothermal synthesis technique provides a powerful, simple, and practical synthetic method resulting in a high isolated yield in a short reaction time.Graphical abstract

The two morpholinyl groups adopt a chair conformation. The phenyl ring is disordered over two sets of sites with equal occupancies [0.500?(2)]. In the crystal, adjacent mol-ecules are linked via N-H?O hydrogen bonds into an extended chain running parallel to the a axis. Only one of the amidate N-H groups is involved in hydrogen bonding.
