Project description:Hydro(solvo)thermal reactions of Cd(NO3)2, N-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)-4-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,8-naphthalimide (NI-mbpy-34), and 5-bromobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (Br-1,3-H2bdc) afforded a luminescent coordination polymer, {[Cd(Br-1,3-bdc)(NI-mbpy-34)(H2O)]∙2H2O}n (1). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that 1 features a two-dimensional (2-D) gridlike sql layer with the point symbol of (44·62), where the Cd(II) center adopts a {CdO5N2} pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis confirmed the thermal stability of 1 up to about 340 °C, whereas XRPD patterns proved the maintenance of crystallinity and framework integrity of 1 in CH2Cl2, H2O, CH3OH, and toluene. Photoluminescence studies indicated that 1 displayed intense blue fluorescence emissions in both solid-state and H2O suspension-phase. Owing to the good fluorescent properties, 1 could serve as an excellent turn-off fluorescence sensor for selective and sensitive Cr(VI) detection in water, with LOD = 15.15 μM for CrO42- and 14.91 μM for Cr2O72-, through energy competition absorption mechanism. In addition, 1 could also sensitively detect Cr3+, Fe3+, and Al3+ ions in aqueous medium via fluorescence-enhancement responses, with LOD = 2.81 μM for Cr3+, 3.82 μM for Fe3+, and 3.37 μM for Al3+, mainly through an absorbance-caused enhancement (ACE) mechanism.

Project description:MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied to the adsorptions of five aromatic amines from aqueous solutions. These three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area analysis. The adsorption mechanism of three MOFs and the effects of the structures of MOFs on the adsorption of aromatic amines were discussed. The results show that the cavity system and suitable hydrogen bond acceptor were important factors for the adsorption for five aromatic amines of aniline, 1-naphthalamine, o-toluidine, 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and 2-nitroaniline: (a) the saturated adsorption capacity of aniline, 1-naphthylamine and o-toluidine on MIL-100(Fe) were 52.0, 53.4 and 49.6 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and cavity system diffusion. (b) The adsorption capacity of 2-nitroaniline and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene on MIL-101(Cr) were 54.3 and 25.0 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the more suitable pore size of MIL-101(Cr) than that of MIL-100(Fe, Cr). The MOFs of MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr) can be potential materials for removing aromatic amines from aqueous solutions.

Project description:This research focused on the investigation of layered double hydroxide (LDH)/halloysite materials' adsorption efficiency and mechanisms in reactions with aqueous As(V) and Cr(VI) in a broad pH range. The materials consisting of Mg/Al LDH and halloysite were synthesized using both direct precipitation and physical mixing methods. The XRD, FTIR, DTA, SEM and XPS methods were used to evaluate the quality of the obtained materials and get insight into removal mechanisms. The XRD, FTIR and DTA confirmed LDH formation and showed the dominating presence of intercalated carbonates in the LDH structure. The SEM of the materials revealed characteristic agglomerates of layered LDH particles deposited on halloysite tubular forms. The raw LDH phases showed high removal efficiency of both As(V) and Cr (VI) for initial pH in the range of 3-7. In the studied concentration range the materials containing 25 wt % of LDH exhibited a removal efficiency very similar to the raw LDH. In particular, the halloysite presence in the materials' mass had a positive effect in the reactions with As(V), which was removed by chemisorption. At a low pH the LDH component underwent partial dissolution, which lowered the adsorption efficiency. Apart from the anion exchange mechanism at a low pH the Cr(VI) was removed via formation of MgCrO4 with Mg (II) being released from the LDH structure. The XPS spectra for As(V) did not show changes in oxidation state in the reactions. In turn, a partial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was observed, especially at a high pH. The use of materials composed of two different minerals is promising due to reduction of costs as well as prevention of adsorbent swelling. This opens the possibility of its use in dynamic adsorption flow through systems.

Project description:HDL carries a rich protein cargo and examining HDL protein composition promises to improve our understanding of its functions. Conventional mass spectrometry methods can be lengthy and difficult to extend to large populations. In addition, without prior enrichment of the sample, the ability of these methods to detect low abundance proteins is limited. Our objective was to develop a high-throughput approach to examine HDL protein composition applicable to diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD).We optimized two multiplexed assays to examine HDL proteins using a quantitative immunoassay (Multi-Analyte Profiling- MAP) and mass spectrometric-based quantitative proteomics (Multiple Reaction Monitoring-MRM). We screened HDL proteins using human xMAP (90 protein panel) and MRM (56 protein panel). We extended the application of these two methods to HDL isolated from a group of participants with diabetes and prior cardiovascular events and a group of non-diabetic controls.We were able to quantitate 69 HDL proteins using MAP and 32 proteins using MRM. For several common proteins, the use of MRM and MAP was highly correlated (p < 0.01). Using MAP, several low abundance proteins implicated in atherosclerosis and inflammation were found on HDL. On the other hand, MRM allowed the examination of several HDL proteins not available by MAP.MAP and MRM offer a sensitive and high-throughput approach to examine changes in HDL proteins in diabetes and CVD. This approach can be used to measure the presented HDL proteins in large clinical studies.

Project description:Metal oxide based minerals naturally contain transition metal impurities isomorphically substituted into the structure that can alter the structural and electronic properties as well as the reactivity of these metal oxides. Natural ?-Al(2)O(3) (corundum) can contain up to 9.17% (w/w) Fe(2)O(3) and 1.81% (w/w) of Cr(2)O(3.) Here we report on changes in the structural and electronic properties of undoped and doped ?-Al(2)O(3) (0001) surfaces using periodic density functional theory (DFT) methods with spin unrestricted B3LYP functional and a local atomic basis set. Both structural and electronic properties are altered upon doping. Implications for doping effects on photochemical processes are discussed.As metal oxides are major components of the environment, including atmospheric mineral aerosol, DFT was also used to study the effect of transition metal impurities on gas/surface interactions of a model acidic atmospheric gas molecule, carbon monoxide (CO). The theoretical results indicated that the presence of Fe(3+) and Cr(3+) impurities substituted on the outer layer of natural corundum surfaces reduces the propensity toward CO adsorption relative to the undoped surface. However, CO-surface interactions resemble that of bulk ?-Al(2)O(3) when the impurity is substituted below the first surface layer. The presence and location of the mineral dopant was found to significantly alter the structural and electronic properties and gas/surface interactions studied here.

Project description:A high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy study of the intermetallic compound Al74Cr15Fe11 reveals a quasiperiodic structure significantly differing from the ones known so far. In contrast to the common quasi-unit-cells based on Gummelt decagons, the present structure is related to a covering formed by Lück decagons, which can also be described by a Hexagon-Bow-Tie tiling.

Project description:An anthracene based fluorescent probe, integrated with thiophene moiety, exhibited selective and sensitive detection of chromium (III) ions over other metal ions. Its synthesis was achieved by simple mixing of two commercially available compounds, 2-aminoanthracene, and 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde, in onestep without the needed complex purification process. The probe molecule ( ANT-Th ) offered exceptional features such as "turn-on" fluorescence response, low detection limit (0.4 μM), and fast response time (<1 min) via C=N bond hydrolysis. Also, a simple test paper system was developed for the rapid detection of chromium (III) ions with the naked eye.

Project description:INTRODUCTION: Nanoscaled aptamers (Aps), as short single-stranded DNA or RNA oligonucleotides, are able to bind to their specific targets with high affinity, upon which they are considered as powerful diagnostic and analytical sensing tools (the so-called "aptasensors"). Aptamers are selected from a random pool of oligonucleotides through a procedure known as "systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment". METHODS: In this work, the most recent studies in the field of aptasensors are reviewed and discussed with a main focus on the potential of aptasensors for the multianalyte detection(s). RESULTS: Due to the specific folding capability of aptamers in the presence of analyte, aptasensors have substantially successfully been exploited for the detection of a wide range of small and large molecules (e.g., drugs and their metabolites, toxins, and associated biomarkers in various diseases) at very low concentrations in the biological fluids/samples even in presence of interfering species. CONCLUSION: Biological samples are generally considered as complexes in the real biological media. Hence, the development of aptasensors with capability to determine various targets simultaneously within a biological matrix seems to be our main challenge. To this end, integration of various key scientific dominions such as bioengineering and systems biology with biomedical researches are inevitable.

Project description:The stoichiometry of titanium carbide (TiCx) particles is important in determining particle properties. Spherical TiCx powders with particle sizes of 1-5 μm were produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in 30 wt.% Al-, 30 wt.% Cu-, and 30 wt.% Fe-Ti-C systems, respectively. To measure the compositions of the carbide powders, atom probe tomography (APT) tip specimens were carefully prepared by using a focus ion-beam milling method. APT analysis revealed that the TiCx particles formed in Al-, Cu-, and Fe-Ti-C systems are highly substoichiometric. The results are consistent with observations of the TiCx particles with a high content of oxygen and a certain amount of secondary metallic elements (Al, Cu, and Fe).

Project description:We describe the synthesis, characterisation and magnetic studies of four tetranuclear, isostructural "butterfly" heterometallic complexes: [MIII2LnIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (H2L = 2,2'-((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol), M = Cr, Ln = Dy (1), Y (2), M = Mn, Ln = Dy (3), Y (4)), which extend our previous study on the analogous 5 {Fe2Dy2}, 6 {Fe2Y2} and 7 {Al2Dy2} compounds. We also present data on the yttrium diluted 7 {Al2Dy2}: 8 {Al2Dy0.18Y1.82}. Compounds dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour for complex 3 {Mn2Dy2}, in the absence of an external magnetic field, with an anisotropy barrier U eff of 19.2 K, while complex 1 {Cr2Dy2}, shows no ac signals even under applied dc field, indicating absence of SMM behaviour. The diluted sample 8 {Al2Dy0.18Y1.82} shows field induced SMM behaviour with an anisotropy barrier U eff of 69.3 K. Furthermore, the theoretical magnetic properties of [MIII2LnIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (M = Cr, 1 or Mn, 3) and their isostructural complexes: [MIII2DyIII2(μ3-OH)2(p-Me-PhCO2)6(L)2] (M = Fe, 5 or Al, 7) are discussed and compared. To understand the experimental observations for this family, DFT and ab initio CASSCF + RASSI-SO calculations were performed. The experimental and theoretical calculations suggest that altering the 3dIII ions can affect the single-ion properties and the nature and the magnitude of the 3dIII-3dIII, 3dIII-DyIII and DyIII-DyIII magnetic coupling, thus quenching the quantum tunneling of magnetisation (QTM) significantly, thereby improving the SMM properties within this motif. This is the first systematic study looking at variation and therefore role of trivalent transition metal ions, as well as the diamgnetic AlIII ion, on slow relaxation of magnetisation within a series of isostructural 3d-4f butterfly compounds.
