ABSTRACT: An ESIPT based fluorescent sensor 1 was developed, which could selectively detect and differentiate trivalent metal ions Cr(3+), Al(3+) and Fe(3+) in aqueous medium. The cell imaging experiments confirmed that 1 can be used for monitoring intracellular Cr(3+) and Al(3+) levels in living cells.

A Cd(II) Luminescent Coordination Grid as a Multiresponsive Fluorescence Sensor for Cr(VI) Oxyanions and Cr(III), Fe(III), and Al(III) in Aqueous Medium.

Project description:Hydro(solvo)thermal reactions of Cd(NO3)2, N-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)-4-(pyridin-4-yl)-1,8-naphthalimide (NI-mbpy-34), and 5-bromobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (Br-1,3-H2bdc) afforded a luminescent coordination polymer, {[Cd(Br-1,3-bdc)(NI-mbpy-34)(H2O)]∙2H2O}n (1). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis showed that 1 features a two-dimensional (2-D) gridlike sql layer with the point symbol of (44·62), where the Cd(II) center adopts a {CdO5N2} pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis confirmed the thermal stability of 1 up to about 340 °C, whereas XRPD patterns proved the maintenance of crystallinity and framework integrity of 1 in CH2Cl2, H2O, CH3OH, and toluene. Photoluminescence studies indicated that 1 displayed intense blue fluorescence emissions in both solid-state and H2O suspension-phase. Owing to the good fluorescent properties, 1 could serve as an excellent turn-off fluorescence sensor for selective and sensitive Cr(VI) detection in water, with LOD = 15.15 μM for CrO42- and 14.91 μM for Cr2O72-, through energy competition absorption mechanism. In addition, 1 could also sensitively detect Cr3+, Fe3+, and Al3+ ions in aqueous medium via fluorescence-enhancement responses, with LOD = 2.81 μM for Cr3+, 3.82 μM for Fe3+, and 3.37 μM for Al3+, mainly through an absorbance-caused enhancement (ACE) mechanism.

Rutin-modified silver nanoparticles as a chromogenic probe for the selective detection of Fe3+ in aqueous medium.

Project description:The development of nanoprobes for selective detection of metal ions in solution has attracted great attention due to their impact on living organisms. As a contribution to this field, this paper reports the synthesis of silver nanoparticles modified with rutin in the presence of ascorbic acid and their successful use as a chromogenic probe for the selective detection of Fe3+ in aqueous solution. Limits of detection and quantification were found to be 17 nmol L-1 and 56 nmol L-1, respectively. The sensing ability is proposed to proceed via an iron-induced nanoparticle growth/aggregation mechanism. A practical approach using image analysis for quantification of Fe3+ is also described.

Metal-Organic Frameworks of MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) for Aromatic Amines Adsorption from Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:MIL-100(Fe, Cr) and MIL-101(Cr) were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and applied to the adsorptions of five aromatic amines from aqueous solutions. These three metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and surface area analysis. The adsorption mechanism of three MOFs and the effects of the structures of MOFs on the adsorption of aromatic amines were discussed. The results show that the cavity system and suitable hydrogen bond acceptor were important factors for the adsorption for five aromatic amines of aniline, 1-naphthalamine, o-toluidine, 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and 2-nitroaniline: (a) the saturated adsorption capacity of aniline, 1-naphthylamine and o-toluidine on MIL-100(Fe) were 52.0, 53.4 and 49.6 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction and cavity system diffusion. (b) The adsorption capacity of 2-nitroaniline and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene on MIL-101(Cr) were 54.3 and 25.0 mg/g, respectively, which can be attributed to the more suitable pore size of MIL-101(Cr) than that of MIL-100(Fe, Cr). The MOFs of MIL-100(Fe) and MIL-101(Cr) can be potential materials for removing aromatic amines from aqueous solutions.

Performance of Halloysite-Mg/Al LDH Materials for Aqueous As(V) and Cr(VI) Removal.

Project description:This research focused on the investigation of layered double hydroxide (LDH)/halloysite materials' adsorption efficiency and mechanisms in reactions with aqueous As(V) and Cr(VI) in a broad pH range. The materials consisting of Mg/Al LDH and halloysite were synthesized using both direct precipitation and physical mixing methods. The XRD, FTIR, DTA, SEM and XPS methods were used to evaluate the quality of the obtained materials and get insight into removal mechanisms. The XRD, FTIR and DTA confirmed LDH formation and showed the dominating presence of intercalated carbonates in the LDH structure. The SEM of the materials revealed characteristic agglomerates of layered LDH particles deposited on halloysite tubular forms. The raw LDH phases showed high removal efficiency of both As(V) and Cr (VI) for initial pH in the range of 3-7. In the studied concentration range the materials containing 25 wt % of LDH exhibited a removal efficiency very similar to the raw LDH. In particular, the halloysite presence in the materials' mass had a positive effect in the reactions with As(V), which was removed by chemisorption. At a low pH the LDH component underwent partial dissolution, which lowered the adsorption efficiency. Apart from the anion exchange mechanism at a low pH the Cr(VI) was removed via formation of MgCrO4 with Mg (II) being released from the LDH structure. The XPS spectra for As(V) did not show changes in oxidation state in the reactions. In turn, a partial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) was observed, especially at a high pH. The use of materials composed of two different minerals is promising due to reduction of costs as well as prevention of adsorbent swelling. This opens the possibility of its use in dynamic adsorption flow through systems.

A highly sensitive and selective on-off fluorescent sensor based on a complex of polySchiff-Fe2+ for Cr(vi) detection in an aqueous medium.

Project description:Designing exceptional probes to detect minute quantities of chromium(vi) is of huge importance for the safety and health of the human race. In this study, a green fluorescence emission probe (polyethylene Schiff base-chelated Fe2+ complex) was synthesized by a one-pot synthesis method for the highly selective and sensitive detection of Cr(vi) in an aqueous solution. The complex of polyethylene Schiff-Fe2+ was fully characterized, and it displayed satisfactory stability in the aqueous solution. The fluorescence emission could be quenched specifically by the introduction of Cr(vi) via the oxidation of the Fe2+-centered polyethylene Schiff base complex. The fluorescence intensity decreases linearly with the concentration of Cr(vi), and the corresponding detection limit was calculated to be 0.18 μM. Thus, the obtained fluorescence detection system could be used for Cr(vi) detection in tap water. These features provide potential uses of the as-prepared polyethylene Schiff-Fe2+ complex as a sensor for environmental applications.

An efficient removal mechanism for different hydrophilic antibiotics from aquatic environments by Cu-Al-Fe-Cr quasicrystals.

Project description:The work studied the adsorption properties and mechanism of Cu-Al-Fe-Cr quasicrystals (QCs) for the adsorption of ibuprofen (IBU), tedizolid phosphate (TZD), and sulbactam sodium (SAM) for the first time. The experimental results showed that quasicrystals were good adsorbents with great potential. The structure, surface morphology, and elemental composition of QCs were investigated by XPS, XRD, SEM, EDX, particle size, DSC-TG, and FTIR. The adsorption pH, kinetics, thermodynamics, and isotherms of IBU, TZD, and SAM in QCs were systematically studied. QCs had good adsorption performance for antibiotics, and the adsorption capacities of IBU, TZD, and SAM were 46.964, 49.206, and 35.292 mg g-1 at the concentration of 25 mg L-1, respectively. The surface charge and hydrophobicity of QCs were affected by changing pH, thereby affecting the adsorption performance of QCs. The main driving forces of adsorption included electrostatic force and hydrophobicity.

The application of multiple reaction monitoring and multi-analyte profiling to HDL proteins.

Project description:HDL carries a rich protein cargo and examining HDL protein composition promises to improve our understanding of its functions. Conventional mass spectrometry methods can be lengthy and difficult to extend to large populations. In addition, without prior enrichment of the sample, the ability of these methods to detect low abundance proteins is limited. Our objective was to develop a high-throughput approach to examine HDL protein composition applicable to diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD).We optimized two multiplexed assays to examine HDL proteins using a quantitative immunoassay (Multi-Analyte Profiling- MAP) and mass spectrometric-based quantitative proteomics (Multiple Reaction Monitoring-MRM). We screened HDL proteins using human xMAP (90 protein panel) and MRM (56 protein panel). We extended the application of these two methods to HDL isolated from a group of participants with diabetes and prior cardiovascular events and a group of non-diabetic controls.We were able to quantitate 69 HDL proteins using MAP and 32 proteins using MRM. For several common proteins, the use of MRM and MAP was highly correlated (p < 0.01). Using MAP, several low abundance proteins implicated in atherosclerosis and inflammation were found on HDL. On the other hand, MRM allowed the examination of several HDL proteins not available by MAP.MAP and MRM offer a sensitive and high-throughput approach to examine changes in HDL proteins in diabetes and CVD. This approach can be used to measure the presented HDL proteins in large clinical studies.

A Water-Stable Zn-MOF Used as Multiresponsive Luminescent Probe for Sensing Fe3+/Cu2+, Trinitrophenol and Colchicine in Aqueous Medium.

Project description:A water-stable Zn-MOF was constructed based on H2PBA and 1, 10-phenanthroline under solvothermal conditions. The compound exhibited a 3D (2,3,8)-connected (43)2(46.66.815.12)(8) topology framework. The crystal structure and phase purity of the compound was verified by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, some studies on the morphology, structure, and luminescent properties were carried out. The results showed that this compound could be used as a versatile chemosensor for Fe3+/Cu2+, trinitrophenol and colchicine via a luminescence quenching effect in an aqueous medium.

An anthracene based fluorescent probe for the selective and sensitive detection of Chromium (III) ions in an aqueous medium and its practical application.

Project description:An anthracene based fluorescent probe, integrated with thiophene moiety, exhibited selective and sensitive detection of chromium (III) ions over other metal ions. Its synthesis was achieved by simple mixing of two commercially available compounds, 2-aminoanthracene, and 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde, in onestep without the needed complex purification process. The probe molecule ( ANT-Th ) offered exceptional features such as "turn-on" fluorescence response, low detection limit (0.4 μM), and fast response time (<1 min) via C=N bond hydrolysis. Also, a simple test paper system was developed for the rapid detection of chromium (III) ions with the naked eye.

Electronic properties and reactivity of simulated Fe(3+) and Cr(3+) substituted ?-Al(2)O(3) (0001) surface.

Project description:Metal oxide based minerals naturally contain transition metal impurities isomorphically substituted into the structure that can alter the structural and electronic properties as well as the reactivity of these metal oxides. Natural ?-Al(2)O(3) (corundum) can contain up to 9.17% (w/w) Fe(2)O(3) and 1.81% (w/w) of Cr(2)O(3.) Here we report on changes in the structural and electronic properties of undoped and doped ?-Al(2)O(3) (0001) surfaces using periodic density functional theory (DFT) methods with spin unrestricted B3LYP functional and a local atomic basis set. Both structural and electronic properties are altered upon doping. Implications for doping effects on photochemical processes are discussed.As metal oxides are major components of the environment, including atmospheric mineral aerosol, DFT was also used to study the effect of transition metal impurities on gas/surface interactions of a model acidic atmospheric gas molecule, carbon monoxide (CO). The theoretical results indicated that the presence of Fe(3+) and Cr(3+) impurities substituted on the outer layer of natural corundum surfaces reduces the propensity toward CO adsorption relative to the undoped surface. However, CO-surface interactions resemble that of bulk ?-Al(2)O(3) when the impurity is substituted below the first surface layer. The presence and location of the mineral dopant was found to significantly alter the structural and electronic properties and gas/surface interactions studied here.
