Apoptotic cells expose phosphatidylserine (PtdSer) on their surface as an "eat me" signal. Mammalian Xk-related (Xkr) protein 8, which is predicted to contain six transmembrane regions, and its Caenorhabditis elegans homolog CED-8 promote apoptotic PtdSer exposure.
