Host-guest-driven color change in water: influence of cyclodextrin on the structure of a copper complex of poly((4-hydroxy-3-(pyridin-3-yldiazenyl)phenethyl)methacrylamide-co-dimethylacrylamide).

ABSTRACT: In the present work we report the synthesis of poly((4-hydroxy-3-(pyridin-3-yldiazenyl)phenethyl)methacrylamide-co-dimethylacrylamide) and its reversible optical and complex-forming properties due to copper and cyclodextrin (CD) interactions. Color changing effects are characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy and the supramolecular behavior is investigated by dynamic light scattering experiments.

Influence of cyclodextrin on the UCST- and LCST-behavior of poly(2-methacrylamido-caprolactam)-co-(N,N-dimethylacrylamide).

Project description:The monomer 2-methacrylamido-caprolactam (4) was synthesized from methacryloyl chloride (3) and racemic ?-amino-?-caprolactam (2). Copolymerization of 4 with N,N-dimethylacrylamide (5) was carried out by a free-radical mechanism using 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) as an initiator. The new copolymers show a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water and an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in ethanol, 1-propanol, and 1-butanol. The solubility properties of the copolymers can be influenced significantly by the addition of randomly methylated ?-cyclodextrin (CD). The complexation of the copolymers with CD, was confirmed by the use of ROESY-NMR-spectroscopy.

Electrospun crosslinked poly-cyclodextrin nanofibers: Highly efficient molecular filtration thru host-guest inclusion complexation.

Project description:Water pollution is a serious concern for public health and environment in today's world; hence, there exists a strong demand to develop cost-effective, sustainable and eco-friendly membranes. Here, we produce a highly efficient molecular filter membrane based on bio-renewable material; cyclic oligosaccaharides known as cyclodextrins (CD). Crosslinked insoluble poly-CD nanofibers are produced by using electrospinning technique in the absence of any additional polymeric carrier. Poly-CD nanofibrous membrane exhibit significant affinity to a common class of organic pollutant (i.e. methylene blue (MB)). Remarkably, the electrospun poly-CD nanofibrous web can outdistance the commonly used filter material (i.e. activated carbon) in terms of removal capacity. The flexible and free-standing poly-CD nanofibrous membrane depicted outstanding filtration performance. We estimate of above 90% removal efficiency for highly concentrated solutions of MB pollutant (40?mg/L) under extremely high flux (3840 Lm-2h-1). Essentially, these poly-CD nanofibrous webs demonstrate quite rapid uptake of MB from liquid environment. Overall, bio-based flexible electrospun poly-CD nanofibrous membrane represents a highly efficient molecular filter for wastewater treatment.

Cyclodextrin-induced host-guest effects of classically prepared poly(NIPAM) bearing azo-dye end groups.

Project description:A thermo-, pH- and cyclodextrin- (CD) responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), with a N,N-dimethylaminoazobenzene end group was synthesized. Using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a chain transfer agent, PNIPAM with a well-defined COOH end group was obtained. The acid end group was transferred to the corresponding acid chloride and then functionalized with N,N-dimethyl[4-(4'-aminophenylazo)phenyl]amine. This dye-end-group-labeled polymer showed acidochromic effects, depending on the pH and the presence of randomly methylated β-cyclodextrin (RAMEB-CD). Also higher cloud-point values for the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in the presence of RAMEB-CD were observed. Additionally, this azo-dye-end-group-labeled polymer was complexed with hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) decorated with β-CD to generate hedgehog-like superstructures.

Project description:In the title complex, [Cu(C13H10N3O)2] n , the copper(II) cation is located on a crystallographic inversion centre and adopts an elongated octa-hedral coordination geometry with the equatorial plane provided by trans-arranged bis-N,O-chelating acyl-hydrazine groups from two ligands and the apices by the N atoms of two pyridine rings belonging to symmetry-related ligands. The ligand adopts a Z conformation about the C=N double bond. The dihedral angle between the pyridine and phenyl rings is 2.99 (13)°. An intra-ligand C-H⋯N hydrogen bond is observed. In the crystal, each ligand bridges two adjacent metal ions, forming a (4,4) grid layered structure. π-π stacking inter-actions [centroid-centroid distances in the range 3.569 (4)-3.584 (9) Å] involving rings of adjacent layers result in the formation of a three-dimensional supra-molecular network.

Poly[(μ-3,5-dinitro-2-oxidobenzoato)(μ-3-hydroxy-pyridine)copper(II)].

Project description:A new coordination polymer, [Cu(C(7)H(2)N(2)O(7))(C(5)H(5)NO)](n), exhibits a double-chain structure, in which 3,5-dinitro-2-oxidobenzoate and 3-hydroxy-pyridine both act as bridging ligands, -connecting adjacent copper(II) centers to form an infinite double-stranded chain. The asymmetric unit contains one Cu(II) ion, one 3,5-dinitro-2-oxidobenzoate ligand and a 3-hydroxy-pyridine ligand. Coordination by one N atom and three O atoms from two different 3,5-dinitro-2-oxidobenzoate ligands and a 3-hydroxy-pyridine ligand creates a square-planar Cu(II) center, which is augmented by a less tightly bonded fifth phenol O atom to form a square-pyramidal five-coordinate complex with an essentially planar base. The double-stranded chains are stabilized by intra-chain π-π inter-actions [the centroid-to-centroid distance between adjacent aromatic rings is 3.719 (7) Å], and further linked through O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular network.

Core-shell structured nanoassemblies based on ?-cyclodextrin containing block copolymer and poly(?-benzyl L-aspartate) via host-guest complexation.

Project description:Double hydrophilic copolymers (PEG-b-PCDs) with one PEG block and another block containing ?-cyclodextrin (?-CD) units were synthesized by macromolecular substitution reaction. Via a dialysis procedure, complex assemblies with a core-shell structure were prepared using PEG-b-PCDs in the presence of a hydrophobic homopolymer poly(?-benzyl L-aspartate) (PBLA). The hydrophobic PBLA resided preferably in the cores of assemblies, while the extending PEG chains acted as the outer shell. Host-guest interaction between ?-CD and hydrophobic benzyl group was found to mediate the formation of the assemblies, where PEG-b-PCD and PBLA served as the host and guest macromolecules, respectively. The particle size of the assemblies could be modulated by the composition of the host PEG-b-PCD copolymer. The molecular weight of the guest polymer also had a significant effect on the size of the assemblies. The assemblies prepared from the host and guest polymer pair were stable during a long-term storage. These assemblies could also be successfully reconstituted after freeze-drying. The assemblies may therefore be used as novel nanocarriers for the delivery of hydrophobic drugs.

Project description:In the title compound, [Cu(CH(3)CO(2))(2)(C(9)H(7)N(3))(H(2)O)](n), the Cu(II) ion is penta-coordinated in a square-pyramidal geometry. The N atoms of the two chelating symmetry-related 5-(pyridin-3-yl)pyrimidine ligands and the O atoms of the two monodentate acetate anions are nearly coplanar, with a mean deviation from the least-squares plane of 0.157?(2)?Å and the Cu(II) ion is displaced by 0.050?(3)?Å from this plane towards the apical water O atom. Bridging through the bis-monodentate 5-(pyridin-3-yl)pyrimidine ligand forms a one-dimensional coordination polymer extending parallel to [010]. In the crystal, O-H?O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into a two-dimensional supra-molecular structure parallel to (100). The crystal studied was an inversion twin with a 0.57?(3):0.43?(3) domain ratio.

The Cu(II) ion has a distorted square-pyramidal geometry and is coordinated by one N atom and three O atoms from the organic ligand and one O atom from a water mol-ecule. The carboxyl O atoms of the ligands bridge the Cu atoms to form an infinite one-dimensional zigzag chain. Inter-molecular hydrogen bonds link these chains into a two-dimensional arrangement.

Project description:In the title compound, {[Cu(C10H8N4)3(H2O)2](ClO4)2} n , the coordination environment of the cationic Cu(II) atom is distorted octa-hedral, formed by pairs of symmetry-equivalent 1,2-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)diazene ligands, bridging 1,2-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)diazene ligands and two non-equivalent water mol-ecules. The 1,2-bis-(pyridin-4-yl)diazene mol-ecules form polymeric chains parallel to [-101] via azo bonds which are situated about inversion centres. Since the Cu(II) atom is situated on a twofold rotation axis, the monomeric unit has point symmetry 2. The perchlorate anions are disordered in a 0.536 (9):0.464 (9) ratio and are acceptors of water H atoms in medium-strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds with graph set R 4 (4)(12). The water mol-ecules, which are coordinated to the Cu(II) atom and are hydrogen-bonded to the perchlorate anions, form columns parallel to [010]. A π-π inter-action [centroid-centroid distance = 3.913 (2) Å] occurs between pyridine rings, and weak C-H⋯O inter-actions also occur.
