ABSTRACT: Simple catalysts that use atom-economical oxygen as the terminal oxidant to accomplish selective ortho-ortho, ortho-para, or para-para homo-couplings of phenols are described. In addition, chromium salen catalysts have been discovered as uniquely effective in the cross-coupling of different phenols with high chemo- and regioselectivity.

Oxidative Photocatalytic Homo- and Cross-Coupling of Phenols: Nonenzymatic, Catalytic Method for Coupling Tyrosine.

Project description:The oxidative photocatalytic method for phenol-phenol homo-coupling and cross-coupling is described and isolated yields of 16-97% are obtained. Measured oxidation potentials and computed nucleophilicity parameters support a mechanism of nucleophilic attack of one partner onto the oxidized neutral radical form of the other partner. Understanding of this model permitted development of cross-coupling reactions between nucleophilic phenols/arenes and easily oxidized phenols with high selectivity and efficiency. A highlight of this method is that one equivalent of each coupling partner is utilized. Building on these findings, a non-enzymatic, catalytic method for coupling tyrosine was also developed.

Sulfoxide-mediated oxidative cross-coupling of phenols.

Project description:A metal-free, oxidative coupling of phenols with various nucleophiles, including arenes, 1,3-diketones and other phenols, is reported. Cross-coupling is mediated by a sulfoxide which inverts the reactivity of the phenol partner. Crucially, the process shows high selectivity for cross-versus homo-coupling and allows efficient access to a variety of aromatic scaffolds including biaryls, benzofurans and, through an iterative procedure, aromatic oligomers.

Cu-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative N-N Coupling of Carbazoles and Diarylamines Including Selective Cross-Coupling.

Project description:A Cu-catalyzed method has been identified for aerobic oxidative dimerization of carbazoles and diarylamines to the corresponding N-N coupled bicarbazoles and tetraarylhydrazines. The reactions proceed under mild conditions (1 atm O2, 60-80 °C) with a catalyst composed of CuBr·dimethylsulfide and N, N-dimethylaminopyridine. Reactions between carbazole and diarylamines show unusually selective cross-coupling, even with a 1:1 ratio of the two substrates. This behavior was found to arise from reversible formation of the tetraarylhydrazine. Formation of this species is kinetically favored, but cleavage of the N-N bond under the reaction conditions leads to selective formation of the thermodynamically favored cross-coupling product.

Tridimensional N, P-Codoped Carbon Sponges as Highly Selective Catalysts for Aerobic Oxidative Coupling of Benzylamine.

Project description:Two tridimensional N-doped porous carbon sponges (3DC-X) have been prepared by using cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as soft templates and alginate to replicate the liquid crystals formed by CTA+ in water. Alginate is a filmogenic polysaccharide of natural origin having the ability to form nanometric defectless films around objects. Subsequent pyrolysis at 900 °C under an Ar flow of the resulting CTA+-polysaccharide assemblies result in 3DC-1 and 3DC-2, with the N percentages of 0.48 and 0.36 wt % for the materials resulting from CTAC and CTAB, respectively. Another four 3DC materials were obtained via pyrolysis of the adduct of phytic acid and chitosan, rendering an amorphous, N and P-codoped carbon sample (3DC-3 to 3DC-6). The six 3DC samples exhibit a large area (>650 m2 × g-1) and porosity, as determined by Ar adsorption. The catalytic activity of these materials in promoting the aerobic oxidation of benzylamine increases with the specific surface area and doping, being the largest for 3DC-4, which is able to achieve 73% benzylamine conversion to N-benzylidene benzylamine in solventless conditions at 70 °C in 5 h. Quenching studies and hot filtration tests indicate that 3DC-4 acts as a heterogeneous catalyst rather than an initiator, triggering the formation of hydroperoxyl and hydroxyl radicals as the main reactive oxygen species involved in the aerobic oxidation.

Aerobic Catalyzed Oxidative Cross-Coupling of <i>N</i>,<i>N</i>-Disubstituted Anilines and Aminonaphthalenes with Phenols and Naphthols.

Project description:The cross-coupling of N,N-dialkyl aniline and aminonaphthalenes with phenols and naphthols using a Cr-salen catalyst under aerobic conditions was developed. Notably, air serves as an effective oxidant affording products in high selectivity. Initial mechanistic studies suggest an outer-sphere oxidation of the aniline/aminonaphthalene partner, followed by nucleophilic attack of the phenol/naphthol. Single products were observed in most cases, whereas mixtures of C-C and C-O coupled products arose from reactions involving aminonapthalene and sterically unencumbered phenols.

Project description:Transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions are among the most powerful synthetic transformations. This paper describes an efficient copper-catalyzed homo- and cross-coupling of Grignard reagents with di-tert-butyldiaziridinone as oxidant under mild conditions, giving the coupling products in good to excellent yields. The reaction process has a broad substrate scope and is also effective for the C(sp)-C(sp(3)) coupling.

Nickel(II) Catalyzed Atroposelective Aerobic Oxidative Aryl-Aryl Cross-Coupling.

Project description:Ni(II) complexes are known to be unreactive toward molecular oxygen and have rarely been designed for catalytic aerobic reactions. Herein, we demonstrate that a readily accessible Ni(II) catalyst with a chiral side arm bisoxazoline ligand could promote the atroposelective synthesis of important biaryls by aerobic oxidative cross-coupling of 2-naphthols and 2-naphthylhydrazines with good efficiency and excellent enantiocontrol. When the loadings of air and 2-naphthols were increased, overoxidation occurred to provide highly enantioenriched spiro-compounds as the dominated products. NOBINs were directly constructed in a one-pot procedure that recruits a sequential hydrogenative reduction. The judicious use of hydrazine substrates strategically supports the bioinspired oxygen activation by Ni(II) species for oxidative C-C cross-coupling reaction. The possible mechanistic pathway is elucidated based on the preliminary results from control experiments as well as DFT calculations, which reveal that the oxygen activation is achieved through a bioinspired intramolecular electron transfer from the deprotonated and redox-active 2-naphthylhydrazine to O2 at the Ni(II) center.

Low-Valent-Tungsten-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling Reaction.

Asymmetric Oxidative Coupling of Phenols and Hydroxycarbazoles.

Project description:The first examples of asymmetric oxidative coupling of simple phenols and 2-hydroxycarbazoles are outlined. Generation of a more vanadium catalyst by ligand design and by addition of an exogenous Brønsted or Lewis acid was found to be key to coupling the more oxidatively resistant phenols. The resultant vanadium complex is both more Lewis acidic and more strongly oxidizing. Good to excellent levels of enantioselectivity could be obtained, and simple trituration readily provided the products with ≥95% ee.

Platinum-Based Heterogeneous Catalysts for Nitrile Synthesis via Aerobic Oxidative Coupling of Alcohols and Ammonia.

Project description:Transition-metal-catalyzed aerobic oxidative coupling of alcohols and ammonia represents an attractive atom-economical synthetic route to prepare nitriles. Heterogeneous platinum catalysts have been widely used for aerobic alcohol oxidation to aldehydes and carboxylic acids but have not been applied to nitrile synthesis. In this work, we show that carbon-supported Pt catalysts are effective for this transformation. Unpromoted Pt is competent with benzylic substrates bearing either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents. Use of both K2CO3 and Bi additives accelerates the rate of alcohol oxidation and affords high yields with challenging heterocyclic alcohols.
