Reversible Switching of Liquid Crystalline Order Permits Synthesis of Homogeneous Populations of Dipolar Patchy Microparticles.

ABSTRACT: The spontaneous positioning of colloids on the surfaces of micrometer-sized liquid crystalline droplets and their subsequent polymerization offers the basis of a general and facile method for the synthesis of patchy microparticles. The existence of multiple local energetic minima, however, can generate kinetic traps for colloids on the surfaces of the liquid crystal (LC) droplets and result in heterogeneous populations of patchy microparticles. To address this issue, here we demonstrate that adsorbate-driven switching of the internal configurations of LC droplets can be used to sweep colloids to a single location on the LC droplet surfaces, thus resulting in the synthesis of homogeneous populations of patchy microparticles. The surface-driven switching of the LC can be triggered by addition of surfactant or salts, and permits the synthesis of dipolar microparticles as well as "Janus-like" microparticles. By using magnetic colloids, we illustrate the utility of the approach by synthesizing magnetically-responsive patchy microdroplets of LC with either dipolar or quadrupolar symmetry that exhibit distinct optical responses upon application of an external magnetic field.

Project description:A series of six polybenzylic dendrons with an alkynyl focal point were synthesized for their incorporation to gold nanoparticles. Five of these compounds showed columnar mesomorphism in a wide range of temperatures. These dendrons were reacted with gold nanoparticles stabilized with a combination of a dodecanethiol and 11-azidoundecane-1-thiol. The azido group of the last compound allowed the functionalization of the nanoparticles with the six polybenzylic dendrons by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition between their alkynyl groups and the terminal azido groups of the thiols. A high efficiency of the cycloaddition process (47-69%) was confirmed by several experimental techniques and no decomposition or aggregation phenomena were detected in the dendron-coated nanoparticles. The involved mechanism and the resulting percentage composition of the final materials are discussed. The results of the ulterior growth of the nanoparticles by thermal treatment are influenced by the size and the shape of the dendron and the temperature of the process. The structures of the final nanoparticles were investigated by TEM, DSC, TGA, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. These nanoparticles do not show liquid crystal properties. However, a melting process between a crystalline and a fluid phase is observed. In the solid phase, the nanomaterials prepared show a short-range interaction between nanoparticles with a 2D local hexagonal order. A near-field effect was observed in the UV-vis spectra by coupling of different surface plasmon resonance bands (SPR) probably due to the short-range interactions. The main novelty of this work lies in the scarcity of previous studies of gold nanoparticles coated with dendrons forming themselves columnar mesophases. Most of the studies reported in the literature deal with gold nanoparticles coated with calamitic mesogens. Additionally, the effect of the thermal treatment, which in a previous paper was shown to increase the mean size of the nanoparticles without increasing their size polydispersity, has been studied in these materials.

Project description:To prevent greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere, separations like CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 from natural gas, biogas, and flue gasses are crucial. Polymer membranes gained a key role in gas separations over the past decades, but these polymers are often not organized at a molecular level, which results in a trade-off between permeability and selectivity. In this work, the effect of molecular order and orientation in liquid crystals (LCs) polymer membranes for gas permeation is demonstrated. Using the self-assembly of polymerizable LCs to prepare membranes ensures control over the supramolecular organization and alignment of the building blocks at a molecular level. Robust freestanding LC membranes were fabricated that have various, distinct morphologies (isotropic, nematic cybotactic, and smectic C) and alignment (planar and homeotropic), while using the same chemical composition. Single gas permeation data show that the permeability decreases with increasing molecular order while the ideal gas selectivity of He and CO2 over N2 increases tremendously (36-fold for He/N2 and 21-fold for CO2/N2) when going from randomly ordered to the highly ordered smectic C morphology. The calculated diffusion coefficients showed a 10-fold decrease when going from randomly ordered membranes to ordered smectic C membranes. It is proposed that with increasing molecular order, the free volume elements in the membrane become smaller, which hinders gasses with larger kinetic diameters (Ar, N2) more than gasses with smaller kinetic diameters (He, CO2), inducing selectivity. Comparison of gas sorption and permeation performances of planar and homeotropic aligned smectic C membranes shows the effect of molecular orientation by a 3-fold decrease of the diffusion coefficient of homeotropic aligned smectic C membranes resulting in a diminished gas permeation and increased ideal gas selectivities. These results strongly highlight the importance of molecular order and orientation in LC polymer membranes for gas separation.
