Simple, chemoselective, catalytic olefin isomerization.

ABSTRACT: Catalytic amounts of Co(Sal(tBu,tBu))Cl and organosilane irreversibly isomerize terminal alkenes by one position. The same catalysts effect cycloisomerization of dienes and retrocycloisomerization of strained rings. Strong Lewis bases like amines and imidazoles, and labile functionalities like epoxides, are tolerated.

Olefin Functionalization/Isomerization Enables Stereoselective Alkene Synthesis.

Project description:Despite tremendous efforts aimed at devising methods for stereoselective alkene synthesis, critical challenges are yet to be addressed. Direct access to a diverse range of 1aryl(boryl)-1-methyl-functionalized tri- and tetrasubstituted trans alkenes, entities that are prevalent in many important molecules of interest, through a catalytic manifold from readily available α-olefin substrates remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that catalytic amounts of a nonprecious N-heterocyclic carbene-Ni(I) complex in conjunction with a sterically bulky base promote site- and trans-selective union of monosubstituted olefins with a wide array of electrophilic reagents to deliver tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenes in up to 92% yield and >98% regio- and stereoselectivity. The protocol is amenable to the preparation of carbon- and heteroatom-substituted C=C bonds, providing distinct advantages over existing transformations. Utility is highlighted through concise stereoselective synthesis of biologically active compounds.

Long-Range Olefin Isomerization Catalyzed by Palladium(0) Nanoparticles.

Project description:Long-range olefin isomerization of 2-alkenylbenzoic acid derivatives going through two to five sp3-carbon atoms to give (E)-alkenes was achieved with palladium(0) nanoparticles. The substrate scope of this reaction includes carboxylic acid, ester, and primary to tertiary amides and tolerates various substituents on the benzene ring. This isomerization reaction was catalyzed by recyclable Pd(0) nanoparticles, prepared in situ from PdCl2 and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses. 1H NMR studies and kinetic modeling supported a stepwise process. This new process was applied to synthesize a natural dihydroisocoumarin with good efficiency.

Catalytic Decomposition of Long-Chain Olefins to Propylene via Isomerization-Metathesis Using Latent Bicyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Carbene-Ruthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalysts.

Project description:One of the most exciting scientific challenges today is the catalytic degradation of non-biodegradable polymers into value-added chemical feedstocks. The mild pyrolysis of polyolefins, including high-density polyethylene (HDPE), results in pyrolysis oils containing long-chain olefins as major products. In this paper, novel bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene ruthenium (BICAAC-Ru) temperature-activated latent olefin metathesis catalysts, which can be used for catalytic decomposition of long-chain olefins to propylene are reported. These thermally stable catalysts show significantly higher selectivity to propylene at a reaction temperature of 75 °C compared to second generation Hoveyda-Grubbs or CAAC-Ru catalysts under ethenolysis conditions. The conversion of long-chain olefins (e.g., 1-octadecene or methyl oleate) to propylene via isomerization-metathesis is performed by using a (RuHCl)(CO)(PPh3 )3 isomerization co-catalyst. The reactions can be carried out at a BICAAC-Ru catalyst loading as low as 1 ppm at elevated reaction temperature (75 °C). The observed turnover number and turnover frequency are as high as 55 000 and 10 000 molpropylene molcatalyst -1 h-1 , respectively.

Contra-thermodynamic Olefin Isomerization by Chain-Walking Hydroboration and Dehydroboration.

Project description:We report a dehydroboration process that can be coupled with chain-walking hydroboration to create a one-pot, contra-thermodynamic, short- or long-range isomerization of internal olefins to terminal olefins. This dehydroboration occurs by a sequence comprising activation with a nucleophile, iodination, and base-promoted elimination. The isomerization proceeds at room temperature without the need for a fluoride base, and the substrate scope of this isomerization is expanded over those of previous isomerizations we have reported with silanes.

Simple, chemoselective hydrogenation with thermodynamic stereocontrol.

Project description:Few methods permit the hydrogenation of alkenes to a thermodynamically favored configuration when steric effects dictate the alternative trajectory of hydrogen delivery. Dissolving metal reduction achieves this control, but with extremely low functional group tolerance. Here we demonstrate a catalytic hydrogenation of alkenes that affords the thermodynamic alkane products with remarkably broad functional group compatibility and rapid reaction rates at standard temperature and pressure.

Hafnium vs. Zirconium, the Perpetual Battle for Supremacy in Catalytic Olefin Polymerization: A Simple Matter of Electrophilicity?

Project description:The performance of C2-symmetric ansa-hafnocene catalysts for isotactic polypropylene typically deteriorates at increasing temperature much faster than that of their zirconium analogues. Herein, we analyze in detail a set of five Hf/Zr metallocene pairs-including some of the latest generation catalysts-at medium- to high-polymerization temperature. Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for stereoselectivity, the ratio allyl/vinyl chain ends, and 2,1/3,1 misinsertions in the polymer indicate a strong dependence of polymerization performance on electrophilicity of the catalyst, which is a function of the ligand framework and the metal center. Based on this insight, the stronger performance decline of hafnocenes is ascribed to electrophilicity-dependent stabilization effects.

Catalytic Chemoselective O-Phosphorylation of Alcohols.

Project description:Phosphorylation of alcohols is a fundamentally important reaction in both life science and physical science. Product phosphate monoesters play key roles in living organisms, natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organic materials. Most of the chemical methods to date for synthesizing phosphate monoesters, however, require multistep sequences or are limited to specific types of substrates possibly due to harsh conditions. An alternative way to enable the simple production of phosphate monoesters from highly functionalized precursor alcohols is, thus, highly desired. We report herein a catalytic phosphorylation of alcohols with high functional group tolerance using tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate (TBAHS) and phosphoenolpyruvic acid monopotassium salt (PEP-K) as the catalyst and phosphoryl donor, respectively. This method enables the direct introduction of a nonprotected phosphate group to the hydroxy group of a diverse menu of alcohol substrates, including functionalized small molecules, carbohydrates, and unprotected peptides. Nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometric, and density functional theory analyses suggest that an unprecedented mixed anhydride species, generated from PEP-K and TBAHS, acts as an active phosphoryl donor in this reaction. This operationally simple and chemoselective catalytic phosphorylation allows for the efficient production of densely functionalized O-phosphorylated compounds, which are useful in diverse fields including biology and medicine.

Catalytic, transannular carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions.

Project description:Transannular carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions complement existing procedures for related ring-closing, ring-opening, and intermolecular carbonyl-olefin metathesis. We herein report the development and mechanistic investigation of FeCl3-catalyzed transannular carbonyl-olefin metathesis reactions that proceed via a distinct reaction path compared to previously reported ring-closing and ring-opening protocols. Specifically, carbonyl-ene and carbonyl-olefin metathesis reaction pathways are competing under FeCl3-catalysis to ultimately favor metathesis as the thermodynamic product. Importantly, we show that distinct Lewis acid catalysts are able to distinguish between these pathways to enable the selective formation of either transannular carbonyl-ene or carbonyl-olefin metathesis products. These insights are expected to enable further advances in catalyst design to efficiently differentiate between these two competing reaction paths of carbonyl and olefin functionalities to further expand the synthetic generality of carbonyl-olefin metathesis.

Kinetically controlled E-selective catalytic olefin metathesis.

Project description:A major shortcoming in olefin metathesis, a chemical process that is central to research in several branches of chemistry, is the lack of efficient methods that kinetically favor E isomers in the product distribution. Here we show that kinetically E-selective cross-metathesis reactions may be designed to generate thermodynamically disfavored alkenyl chlorides and fluorides in high yield and with exceptional stereoselectivity. With 1.0 to 5.0 mole % of a molybdenum-based catalyst, which may be delivered in the form of air- and moisture-stable paraffin pellets, reactions typically proceed to completion within 4 hours at ambient temperature. Many isomerically pure E-alkenyl chlorides, applicable to catalytic cross-coupling transformations and found in biologically active entities, thus become easily and directly accessible. Similarly, E-alkenyl fluorides can be synthesized from simpler compounds or more complex molecules.

A practical and catalytic reductive olefin coupling.

Project description:A redox-economic method for the direct coupling of olefins that uses an inexpensive iron catalyst and a silane reducing agent is reported. Thus, unactivated olefins can be joined directly to electron-deficient olefins in both intra- and intermolecular settings to generate hindered bicyclic systems, vicinal quaternary centers, and even cyclopropanes in good yield. The reaction is not sensitive to oxygen or moisture and has been performed on gram-scale. Most importantly, it allows access to many compounds that would be difficult or perhaps impossible to access using other methods.
