ABSTRACT: The intrinsically unpolarized emission from luminescent Eu(III) ions is transformed to wavelength-resolved and sharply directional polarized emission by coupling with plasmonic and photonic modes present in metal-dielectric layered substrates. This nanoscale control over lanthanide luminescence can facilitate the design of novel emissive structures with potential technological applications.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence from New Heteroleptic Eu(III) and Tb(III) Complexes.

Project description:The complexes [Eu(bpcd)(tta)], [Eu(bpcd)(Coum)], and [Tb(bpcd)(Coum)] [tta = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetyl-acetonate, Coum = 3-acetyl-4-hydroxy-coumarin, and bpcd = N,N'-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane-N,N'-diacetate] have been synthesized and characterized from photophysical and thermodynamic points of view. The optical and chiroptical properties of these complexes, such as the total luminescence, decay curves of the Ln(III) luminescence, electronic circular dichroism, and circularly polarized luminescence, have been investigated. Interestingly, the number of coordinated solvent (methanol) molecules is sensitive to the nature of the metal ion. This number, estimated by spectroscopy, is >1 for Eu(III)-based complexes and <1 for Tb(III)-based complexes. A possible explanation for this behavior is provided via the study of the minimum energy structure obtained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the model complexes of the diamagnetic Y(III) and La(III) counterparts [Y(bpcd)(tta)], [Y(bpcd)(Coum)], and [La(bpcd)(Coum)]. By time-dependent DFT calculations, estimation of donor-acceptor (D-A) distances and of the energy position of the S1 and T1 ligand excited states involved in the antenna effect was possible. These data are useful for rationalizing the different sensitization efficiencies (ηsens) of the antennae toward Eu(III) and Tb(III). The tta ligand is an optimal antenna for sensitizing Eu(III) luminescence, while the Coum ligand sensitizes better Tb(III) luminescence {ϕovl = 55%; ηsens ≥ 55% for the [Tb(bpcd)(Coum)] complex}. Finally, for the [Eu(bpcd)(tta)] complex, a sizable value of glum (0.26) and a good quantum yield (26%) were measured.

Brilliant Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy chiral lanthanide complexes with strong circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and luminescent behavior of trivalent Sm, Eu, Dy, and Tb complexes of two enantiomeric, octadentate, chiral, 2-hydroxyisophthalamide ligands are reported. These complexes are highly luminescent in solution. Functionalization of the achiral parent ligand with a chiral 1-phenylethylamine substituent on the open face of the complex in close proximity to the metal center yields complexes with strong circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) activity. This appears to be the first example of a system utilizing the same ligand architecture to sensitize four different lanthanide cations and display CPL activity. The luminescence dissymmetry factor, g(lum), recorded for the Eu(III) complex is one of the highest values reported, and this is the first time the CPL effect has been demonstrated for a Sm(III) complex with a chiral ligand. The combination of high luminescence intensity with CPL activity should enable new bioanalytical applications of macromolecules in chiral environments.

Antenna surface plasmon emission by inelastic tunneling.

Project description:Surface plasmons polaritons are mixed electronic and electromagnetic waves. They have become a workhorse of nanophotonics because plasmonic modes can be confined in space at the nanometer scale and in time at the 10 fs scale. However, in practice, plasmonic modes are often excited using diffraction-limited beams. In order to take full advantage of their potential for sensing and information technology, it is necessary to develop a microscale ultrafast electrical source of surface plasmons. Here, we report the design, fabrication and characterization of nanoantennas to emit surface plasmons by inelastic electron tunneling. The antenna controls the emission spectrum, the emission polarization, and enhances the emission efficiency by more than three orders of magnitude. We introduce a theoretical model of the antenna in good agreement with the results.

Surface Plasmon Field-Enhanced Raman Scattering Co-Excited by P-Polarized and S-Polarized Light Based on Waveguide-Coupled Surface Plasmon Resonance Configuration.

Project description:We constructed a waveguide-coupled surface plasmon resonance (WCSPR) structure to enhance Raman scattering. In this structure, P-polarized and S-polarized incident lasers can simultaneously coexcite the evanescent field, thereby further enhancing Raman scattering. This configuration is a five-phase Kretschmann resonance setup that consists of a SF10 prism/inner Ag film/SiO2 film/outer Ag film/water structure. The WCSPR configuration effectively concentrates and confines the evanescent field excited by the incident light. Ag nanoparticles assembled on the outer Ag film surface enhance the evanescent field further by means of surface plasmon resonance. By finely tuning the thickness of the Ag and SiO2 films, it is possible to achieve a coincidence between the SPR angle of P-polarized light and that of S-polarized light. At this angle, both P- and S-polarized light can jointly elevate the evanescent field intensity, leading to the simultaneous enhancement of the electric fields at the upper, lower, left, and right parts of the silver nanoparticles and generating maximum evanescent field enhancement. We achieved an electric field enhancement of up to 103 around the nanoparticles, leading to more SERS hotspots and comparable SERS enhancement capability to gap-type hotspots. Our WCSPR structure combined with the nanoparticles offers a feasible strategy for the SERS detection of large molecules that cannot be placed in traditional gap-type hotspots. It is highly convenient for SERS detection of large molecules.

Ultrasound-Assisted Synthesis of Luminescent Micro- and Nanocrystalline Eu-Based MOFs as Luminescent Probes for Heavy Metal Ions.

Project description:The luminescent coarse-, micro- and nanocrystalline europium(III) terephthalate tetrahydrate (Eu2bdc3·4H2O) metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by the ultrasound-assisted wet-chemical method. Electron micrographs show that the europium(III) terephthalate microparticles are 7 μm long leaf-like plates. According to the dynamic light scattering technique, the average size of the Eu2bdc3·4H2O nanoparticles is equal to about 8 ± 2 nm. Thereby, the reported Eu2bdc3·4H2O nanoparticles are the smallest nanosized rare-earth-based MOF crystals, to the best of our knowledge. The synthesized materials demonstrate red emission due to the 5D0-7FJ transitions of Eu3+ upon 250 nm excitation into 1ππ* state of the terephthalate ion. Size reduction results in broadened emission bands, an increase in the non-radiative rate constants and a decrease in both the quantum efficiency of the 5D0 level and Eu3+ and the luminescence quantum yields. Cu2+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions efficiently and selectively quench the luminescence of nanocrystalline europium(III) terephthalate, which makes it a prospective material for luminescent probes to monitor these ions in waste and drinking water.

Tamm plasmon- and surface plasmon-coupled emission from hybrid plasmonic-photonic structures.

Project description:Photonic and plasmon-coupled emissions present new opportunities for control on light emission from fluorophores, and have many applications in the physical and biological sciences. The mechanism of and the influencing factors for the coupling between the fluorescent molecules and plasmon and/or photonic modes are active areas of research. In this paper, we describe a hybrid photonic-plasmonic structure that simultaneously contains two plasmon modes: surface plasmons (SPs) and Tamm plasmons (TPs), both of which can modulate fluorescence emission. Experimental results show that both SP-coupled emission (SPCE) and TP-coupled emission (TPCE) can be observed simultaneously with this hybrid structure. Due to the different resonant angles of the TP and SP modes, the TPCE and SPCE can be beamed in different directions and can be separated easily. Back focal plane images of the fluorescence emission show that the relative intensities of the SPCE and TPCE can be changed if the probes are at different locations inside the hybrid structure, which reveals the probe location-dependent different coupling strengths of the fluorescent molecules with SPs and TPs. The different coupling strengths are ascribed to the electric field distribution of the two modes in the structure. Here, we present an understanding of these factors influencing mode coupling with probes, which is vital for structure design for suitable applications in sensing and diagnostics.

Myoglobin immunoassay utilizing directional surface plasmon-coupled emission.

Project description:We described an immunoassay for the cardiac marker myoglobin on a thin silver mirror surface using surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE). SPCE occurs for fluorophores in proximity (within approximately 200 nm) of a thin metal film (in our case, silver) and results in a highly directional radiation through a glass substrate at a well-defined angle from the normal axis. We used the effect of SPCE to develop a myoglobin immunoassay on the silver mirror surface deposited on a glass substrate. Binding of the labeled anti-myoglobin antibodies led to the enhanced fluorescence emission at a specific angle of 72 degrees . The directional and enhanced directional fluorescence emission enables detection of myoglobin over a wide range of concentrations from subnormal to the elevated level of this cardiac marker. Utilizing SPCE allowed us also to demonstrate significant background suppression (from serum or whole blood) in the myoglobin immunoassay. We expect SPCE to become a powerful technique for performing immunoassays for many biomarkers in surface-bound assays.

Lanthanide(III) Ions and 5-Methylisophthalate Ligand Based Coordination Polymers: An Insight into Their Photoluminescence Emission and Chemosensing for Nitroaromatic Molecules.

Project description:The work presented herein reports on the synthesis, structural and physico-chemical characterization, luminescence properties and luminescent sensing activity of a family of isostructural coordination polymers (CPs) with the general formula [Ln2(μ4-5Meip)3(DMF)]n (where Ln(III) = Sm (1Sm), Eu (2Eu), Gd (3Gd), Tb (4Tb) and Yb (5Yb) and 5Meip = 5-methylisophthalate, DMF = N,N-dimethylmethanamide). Crystal structures consist of 3D frameworks tailored by the linkage between infinite lanthanide(III)-carboxylate rods by means of the tetradentate 5Meip ligands. Photoluminescence measurements in solid state at variable temperatures reveal the best-in-class properties based on the capacity of the 5Meip ligand to provide efficient energy transfers to the lanthanide(III) ions, which brings intense emissions in both the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. On the one hand, compound 5Yb displays characteristic lanthanide-centered bands in the NIR with sizeable intensity even at room temperature. Among the compounds emitting in the visible region, 4Tb presents a high QY of 63%, which may be explained according to computational calculations. At last, taking advantage of the good performance as well as high chemical and optical stability of 4Tb in water and methanol, its sensing capacity to detect 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) among other nitroaromatic-like explosives has been explored, obtaining high detection capacity (with Ksv around 105 M-1), low limit of detection (in the 10-6-10-7 M) and selectivity among other molecules (especially in methanol).

Chiroptical spectra of a series of tetrakis((+)-3-heptafluorobutylyrylcamphorato)lanthanide(III) with an encapsulated alkali metal ion: circularly polarized luminescence and absolute chiral structures for the Eu(III) and Sm(III) complexes.

Project description:The luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectra of M(I)[Eu((+)-hfbc)(4)] show a similar behavior to the exciton CD in the intraligand π-π* transitions when the alkali metal ions and solvents are manipulated. There is a difference in susceptibility in solvation toward the alkali metal ions but not toward the Eu(III) ion, as in the case of axially symmetric DOTA-type compounds. The remarkable CPL in the 4f-4f transitions provide much more information on the stereospecific formation of chiral Eu(III) complexes, since CPL spectroscopy is limited to luminescent species and reflects selectively toward helicity of the local structural environment around the lanthanide(III). While in comparison, exciton CD reveals the chiral structural information from the helical arrangement of the four bladed chelates. Of special importance, the observation of the highest CPL activities measured to date for lanthanide(III)-containing compounds (i.e., Eu and Sm) in solution supports the theory that the chirality of lanthanide(III) in the excited state corresponds to that in the ground state, which was derived from the exciton CD.

An octadentate luminescent Eu(III) 1,2-HOPO chelate with potent aqueous stability.

Project description:The synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of two novel ligands, 5LINMe-1,2-HOPO (1) and H(2,2)-1,2-HOPO (2), which utilize the 1,2-HOPO chelate as a sensitizer for Eu(III) are reported. In addition, the former ligand was structurally characterized as the Eu(III) complex by X-ray crystallography. The [Eu(1)2]- complex of the tetradentate ligand (1) is stable in aqueous solution, to a limiting concentration of ca. 7x10(-9) M, and retains the superior photophysical performance noted for the 1,2-HOPO sensitizer. By contrast, the octadentate ligand (2) has vastly improved stability as the [Eu(2)]- complex upon further dilution, to a limiting concentration of ca. 5x10(-17) M, which is beyond the minimum detectable concentration of most fluorimeters. The presence of a single coordinated water molecule for the latter complex reduces the overall metal-centered luminescence.
